For all of 5 min. And what does shutting down a web server do?

Begun, the Net Wars have.

To be fair, this is going to pretty much put the Secret Service on a full on press. I do not envy these cats. Mind you, it will be time in Club Fed, and with consultancy jobs afterward, but this is not going to end well for some folks.

Still, I can't fault most of their choices to mess with. The MPAA and RIAA are pretty much driving things further, and it's just going to get uglier, and the thing is, it's less about the piracy, for SOPA, than control of the market, and preserving the distributors and publishers ability to play middlemen.

I bet the RIAA took it's self down, just so they could blame Anon and "gain some sympathy"

Either way Anon should make a point of not claiming that site.

This is the beginning of the end RIAA. Welcome to the future. We don't have any place for you in it.

The politicians that take money from the RIAA and MPAA need to be beaten with a rolled-up copy of the Time issue with John Gilmore's quote.

who the hell has sympathy for the RIAA? If in the late 90s they were smart enough to say, "hey napster, that there's some awesome shiat. gimme some of dat." all this would a pimple on the ass of history. but no, they were stupid and now they are cowards.

In all fairness, MegaUpload did have paying customers watching content that MegaUpload was not paying anybody but themselves for.

A farking ton of it.

So, they should sink that money into making films and music to pay back the creative community.

Right?

f that. entertainment should be free. I should decide how much money is enough for other people, but my cubicle job should pay 100k plus benefits plus company car. fark those hollywood fat cats like those actors that have to work 3 jobs plus it's a victimless crime cuz I don't even know the people I'm farking over.

Some background information that I posted in the other thread to give people an idea of the motivation behind current anti-MU efforts by the publishing industry.

Taken directly from an article written by Kim Dotcom (new window), founder of Megaupload, last month regarding Megaupload's lawsuit against UMG.

=============================================================
UMG knows that we are going to compete with them via our own music venture called Megabox.com, a site that will soon allow artists to sell their creations direct to consumers and allowing artists to keep 90% of earnings.

We have a solution called the Megakey that will allow artists to earn income from users who download music for free. Yes that's right, we will pay artists even for free downloads. The Megakey business model has been tested with over a million users and it works. You can expect several Megabox announcements next year including exclusive deals with artists who are eager to depart from outdated business models.

You need to understand that some labels are run by arrogant and outdated dinosaurs who have been in business for 1000 years. These guys think an iPad is a facial treatment, the Internet is the devil, and wired phones are still hip. They are in denial about the new realities and opportunities. They don't understand that the rip-off days are over. Artists are more educated than ever about how they are getting ripped off and how the big labels only look after themselves.

Dinosaur labels don't have the answers to today's new realities. UMG chose to willfully sabotage our campaign instead of analyzing the situation and seeing that the answers to all their problems are right in front of them.

With ya there [last line of my previous post for proof] and my master plan has been foiled anyway.... Anon has already claimed the RIAA site as their doing...
But there are many that have issues with the whole hack thing and Anon specifically...
If there were some doubt who took the site down, the spin would quickly turn ugly for RIAA...

Attacking RIAA or MPAA is one thing, but crashing the FBI website? The balls on these guys.

You mean the side that is manipulating our elected representatives to change the law to favor them over the other guy. If the law were just and fair, the MPAA and RIAA would have been shut down for RICO violations a decade ago.

Because everything on megaupload was pirated porn, and it was Megaupload's job to enforce other peoples' copyrights. Right, Mr. Dodd?

Even on those sites they go after uploaders.

Normally I would be on megaupload's side on this, presuming they kept up with all complaints, especially with the whole not a US citizen thing.

However, according to leaked emails (no I don't know where from), they were apparently paying people to upload pirating content, which if true (admittedly a large if), well they are just stupid.

2012-01-19 10:12:58 PM
Cool. Though this may backfire for them. One, attacking the FBI and DoJ is pretty risky. The RIAA and MPAA can't really do anything about it, but the FBI probably doesn't take kindly to being DDOSed. Two, it provides fodder to SOPA/PIPA backers. Now they can say that these internet nerds aren't just opposed to SOPA and PIPA, they actually just support piracy. They're not happy even with the laws as they are now.

What a childish fallacy. No and no. This is like a mugger (4chan) attacking a child molester (RIAA). The nature of the "victim" doesn't make the assailant an effin' hero; it's not even vigilante justice.

The indictment (new window) lists the email evidence against them. They were very stupid.

/Only question is how did the feds get the emails in the first place?

Update 21: We can't believe this, but it looks like Megaupload is trying to get back online with a new URL. Not quite - the URL that is floating around "megavideo.bz" is a scam site and will infect your computer. We advise against visiting this site.

At first I was going to say "Ooooo, a bunch of script-kiddies are throwing a tantrum. Now I'm scrrrd! Please, a DDoS attack is pointless, all you're doing is taking down some billboards. You're not really disrupting business."

But then I thought about it. I do IT work for a large, global company, and I realized that most of the common tools that everyone in the company uses on a daily basis are web-based apps that sit on our domain. You take down our domain with a DDoS attack and we could loose access to all kinds of things that are essential to the smooth day-to-day operation of the business, here in the US at least. Most large companies have similar infrastructure, so taking down these domains may very well have caused some considerable chaos, or at the very least annoyed the crap out of a lot of folks.

/they're still just a bunch of script-kiddies throwing a tantrum though

US agencies have external and internal sites. Most likely, Anon only attacked the external site, since those are the ones the public can see, and the whole point of these attacks is to be visible. Taking these sites down, however, probably won't have any meaningful effect on the agency in question.
