not really a big loss the way he has been pitching

Cleveland Indians pitcher Fausto Carmona has been arrested in the Domincan Republic for using a false identity.

So he was impersonating a major league pitcher?

Okay, two things.

1. Isn't this the second time this has happened since September? This is like a new plague on MLB.

2. I always thought that "Fausto Carmona" was kind of a freaky name. Now I know why.

Holy shiat. Well, if he isn't coming back, that's not really a loss. Just about anyone down in Columbus would be better, plus cost a whole hell of a lot less.

Wow, it's like he made some kind of deal with the devil for millions of dollars, and now the devil is claiming his soul.

Well as long as Sidd Finch used his real ID, that's all that matters.

Leo Nunez (pops) is the other guy I was talking about.

Could the Indians just void the deal if they wanted to? His contract was signed with the phony name, and they could argue that he defrauded them with the age info.

"Little is known at this time about the arrest, or who the real Roberto Hernandez Heredia might be"

But isn't he the real Roberto Hernandez Heredia? Shouldn't the question be who is the real Fausto Carmona?

2012-01-19 06:39:21 PM
The greatest trick Carmona ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist...

...and like that, POOF. He's gone.

FishyFred: Leo Nunez (pops) is the other guy I was talking about.

I know they're the marlins and they apparently think they're gonna have mad amounts of cash from moving to a new ugly stadium...but WHY IN THE WORLD did they give Juan Leo Carlos Nunez Oveido 6 million for next year?

Eh, this is a distant second to the part-time Japanese gay porn star relief pitcher they signed a few years ago.

what's in a name?

It's called "Dominican Math" for a reason.

I would have been shocked if he turned out to actually be 28.

So, he's on essentially a one-year contract for $7MM this year. Which honestly, is about right for him whether he was 28 or 31. That being said, it's very unlikely his options for the next two years get picked up ($9MM in 2013, $12MM for 2014). The bigger issue for the Indians is the Visa thing.

Getting a Visa to work in the US is hard enough. But there's a very real chance the authorities in the DR won't allow him to get one at all, and it's unlikely that he will get one anytime soon. So you can pretty much bank on him missing some spring training time, and if he doesn't miss some of the season... that would be a small miracle.

That being said, it's not all bad. If he can't play due to Visa issues, the Indians can simply place him on the restricted list (like the Marlins did with Nunez). They won't have to pay him while he's on that list, but they won't have to release him or void his contract either. And the Indians have several major league ready options in AAA at their disposal if #55 isn't ready to go (Jeanmar Gomez being the best of them).

/An agent goes up to a 20 year old Dominican pitcher, and asks "Have you ever heard of the tale of Faust?"
//"No... why?"
///"No reason. Your name is now Fausto. You are also 17... take these papers... and you'll be getting pro baseball money in no time!"
