What a Maverick!

2012-01-19 03:35:12 PM
So, let me get this straight. They want to listen to the Supreme Court as to whether or not Obama is American enough to be president, but they are perfectly OK with Newt ignoring the decisions they make that he doesn't like? Why have a 3 branches of government then?

So, Newt's running on the Sedition Platform, huh?

Exactly, everyone hates congress too, so let's just get rid of everyone except Newt.

Newt is a narcissist and a sociopath, and anyone who would consider voting for him needs to have their head examined.

WTF Indeed: [k.wigflip.com image 614x331]

I didn't know Newt Gingrich was a Sith Lord.

/Makes sense.

This is of course the same activist Supreme Court that gave Bush the Presidency.

2012-01-19 05:32:16 PM
Newt Gingrich does not have the temperment to be president. Deeply character flawed.

2012-01-19 05:38:55 PM
Newt Gingrich is what a stupid person thinks a smart person sounds like.

I'm curious as to what would happen if a President actively disobeyed a ruling by the Supreme Court. Is there any remedy other than Congress removing the President from office?

that's what Gingrich is saying - get rid of Congress and he'll rule directly. Because he loves america THAT MUCH!

2012-01-19 07:41:36 PM
Yes America could use a good dictator.

Sh*t would actually get done. Amirite? Isn't this the real reason why Obama has disappointed so many of you?

2012-01-19 07:44:03 PM
So, are we going to have a debate thread, or are we supposed to post in one of these?

As I read the headline, I thought I heard it in John Oliver's voice.

Shhhh, don't say dictator around Newt. It gets him aroused.

The only reason why he's on the campaign trail is to whore his merchandise. He was never a serious candidate.

y'know, as an aside, I don't think we're going to see much 'debate' from our GOP shills this year. as we get closer to the Presidental election season I'm actually anticipating our usual suspects to be LESS coherent and more 'cut and paste' when it comes to their comments in the fark politics tab. they'll scream and shout, not discuss and debate.

2012-01-19 07:45:59 PM
He knows he's not even going to get the nomination, much less the Presidency so who gives a shiat.

well that's ONE of his goals. the other seems to be to damage Romney as much as possible. why? because f*ck you, that's why.

The former-Speaker has been in politics now long enough that people have generally made up their minds about him. If anything he said in this article is new information to people, you haven't been paying attention. shiat, in 1995 I was only 10 years old ... and even I have heard about how the former-Speaker had a tantrum on Air Force One and shut down the Government.

I hope Newt gets the nomination. Here's why: he'll go down in flames to a man who shouldn't have been elected the first time.

This, God willing, will drive the Michele Bachman/Rush Limbaugh/Ron Paul/Newt Gingrich/Paul Ryan, or "Tea Party", if you will, wing of the party into submission, and let actual adults come to the fore to govern.

Obama won't be able to get much done. He'll face a Republican Congress. It's not the best outcome, but it's not the worst either.

I mean sure, nothing will get down about the mortgage market and underwater homeowners, and policies that would be effective stimulating aggregate demand will continue to get ignored in favor of "media friendly" (read: inadequate) policies that appeal to specific interest groups, but that happens anyway.

On the other hand, if Gingy wins, he'd unite the country in a way it hasn't been since the Andrew Johnson Administration... you know, everyone but a small segment of the GOP would be opposed to him.

Either way, the bat-shiat crazy wing of the GOP gets destroyed, and the adults can come out and govern.

What's there to actually "debate?"

Aren't you sick of the derp by now?

If I were Republican I'd be demanding that every candidate get sacked and that they should put some real people in there.

So I've noticed we haven't seen Newt's #1 supporter around here in awhile - the dog that is black. Come on CN, chime in on this!

I really think if Newt was to get elected he would be impeached and removed from office at some point.

2012-01-19 07:56:17 PM
"The president interprets the Constitution as president," Gingrich said. "If the court makes a fundamentally wrong decision, [the] president can in fact ignore the courts."

Wait wait wait.

I thought, according to the Constitution, SCOTUS, not the President, interprets the law. Its the other way around Grinchrich.

whidbey: Yes America could use a

Newt isn't exactly Cincinnatus.

Newt's dictatorship would probably proceed like Sulla's (with Libs and Dems being treated worse than the Marians) and end like Caesar's.

Corvus: I really think if Newt was to get elected he would be impeached and removed from office at some point.

Wouldn't he just throw anyone who tried to impeach him into jail? It would have something to do with the crime of being liberal in Washington or something along those lines, I'm sure.

Do you honestly think this country could withstand a Gingrich Presidency, even for one term? Please note: that while President Obama promised his administration would not detain American citizens... that doesn't mean future ones won't, which is why it is so dangerous.

It could very easily be used to quell dissent. As it is, look how the Occupy protesters have been treated around the country. This is why it's a huge freaking deal.

I knew the SC primary would be fun, but I had no idea it would be like this!

This primary is ALL about the internal power struggle within the GOP. After Newt gets his ass handed to him on Saturday by Romney, the Christian Nationalists will be compelled to either fall in line like they always have or leave the party.

The wild card is Santorum: I suspect he's working the ground game in the churches, and that could be a highly successful strategy.

Yes, I was attempting to typographically emphasize the word 'good' in your erst-fay ost-pay in order to show that it's not the office of dictator that's the problem, it's the officeholder.

And while I don't see much wrong with a constitutional dictatorship, my crappy example shows why it won't work here.

For it to work, the dictatees have to have a small, somewhat homogeneous population. It worked for Rome in Cincinattus' day, but by the end of the Republic, Rome was too big with too many competing interests.
