The felony is offering her a spot if she supports him, which by the looks of his waist he might need the entire Palin family.

2012-01-19 04:58:39 PM
It's about time someone throws him in prison.

Pffft. Big, hairy deal. What's a little Felony to a guy who was not only found to have violated federal tax law, but was also the only Speaker of the House to be cited for ethics violations?

Sounds like he bribed her to me.

He already did this by saying he'd put John Bolton in his Cabinet.

No one will do anything.

Laws don't apply to the Newtster.

2012-01-19 05:26:15 PM
I'd love to see Newt arrested for this, but he's never been held accountable for anything.

It's kinda why he's such a sociopath.

2012-01-19 05:27:03 PM
What job did he offer her? Fluffer?

2012-01-19 05:27:52 PM
Silly, subby. Laws only matter when you're not rich and well-connected.

So? He was in the government, and has lots of money. He gets to do whatever he wants. You peons are just envious, and trying to start class warfare.

It's not illegal unless he offers her the job on the condition she endorses him.

Of course it was also unconstitutional to appoint Hillary Clinton to secretary of state because she had voted to give that position a raise in her most recent term as senator. She turned down the extra money but that doesn't change the fact the law said she is ineligible.

Not that anyone cares but it IS the law.

It actually very very clearly and completely undeniably is.

the language is "for the purpose of procuring support" and "promises"

They can both break the promise and not even get the support.

2012-01-19 05:33:13 PM
She endorsed him first and then he offered a hypothetical position. I dislike Newt as much as the next human being, but it seems like the law only applies if it was the other way around.

No, it's illegal to announce your cabinet before being elected.

The question of the day is:

If Santorum offers Jesus a cabinet position before being elected, is that breaking the law?

Details. They're a biatch.

Yet it isn't too hard to see old Newt falling into this kind of error. Technicalities and the hard work of getting the mechanics right just aren't his thing. He sees his role as being the epic visionary and letting all the little people get busy and implement his idea of what has to happen. If everyone would just get with his program everything would be great. In short, Newt is a big ego slacker who has an incredibly inflated impression of his own ability and education.

Has anybody even got in trouble with that in American history? It sounds like mostly a fine punishment instead of imprisionment.

So basically Newt will lose the primary and run as an independent in the general, thereby embarrassing Romney and achieving his revenge on the GOP by fracturing it even further.

Probably not, but a man can dream.

Newt Gingrich long ago squandered any possibility that I would take him seriously enough to read about him. To put it another way, the guy is so far down in the mud that it doesn't really matter whether he was a reprehensible piece of shiat this time.

I'm pretty sure there was no felony here without an explicit quid pro quo prior to Palin's endorsement.

Meh, I think this law is unconstitutional, violating the first amendment protection of freedom of speech. Gingrich should be able to say who he wants to hire in the fantasy world where he becomes President of the United States. He's writen science fiction in the past, why not now?

/no, really, he's written a series of alternate universe novels set during World War II

Well now, I guess the only issue now is: Was that an offer, or was it only an indication that he'd like her to be on his staff.

With the money he'd throw at lawyers to litigate that, a prosecutor would have to be insane to try to get him on that.

Laws. You people are so farking cute and innocent. Laws are for little people. Newt could rape a black baby on live TV and then set it on fire, nobody would touch him. Although he would likely get the Republican primary locked up however.

Perhaps. But could it be construed as a message to other candidates that, were they to suspend their campaigns, he's willing to toss an appointment their way in exchange for their endorsement?

I don't know what the big deal is....it's not like he used tax payer dollars to bribe a congressman in Nebraska to vote for his healthcare bill or anything.

And his open marriage? Shiat, he'd just been hanging around with Bill and Hillary too much.

2012-01-19 06:16:27 PM
Republicans really don't get it. I consider myself independent although I do lean to the right. I have only ever registered as a Republican once and that was only so I could vote AGAINST one in a primary (Joe Arpaio).

But Sarah Palin is batshiat insane Anyone who has anything to do with her should not be taken seriously.

All of the Republicans who I could even consider voting for President have either not launched a campaign or have bowed out. The more I look at the GOP presidential candidates the more I like Obama. And that's a farking shame because I think we do need "hope and change" but Obama has given us little to hope for and absolutely no change (at least not for the better).

I think the GOP has given up any hope for winning the Executive Branch in 2012 and are just farking around hoping that the Dems don't come up with an unbeatable candidate in 2016.

Ron Paul has some good ideas - also some crazy ones. He is unelectable. This is the final nail in Gingrich's coffin as far as I'm concerned. Only nutjobs ever took Palin or Bachman seriously. So what is the GOP's best chance this year? Romney. He's the guy that most of us who are likely GOP voters aren't too sure about, but hasn't really convinced us that he'd be a good president.

Newt met his first wife, Jackie, when he was a 16-year-old high school student in Columbus, Ga. Jackie was his 23-year-old math teacher. They married when Gingrich was a freshman at Emory University in Atlanta,
