Duh. We all know the Democratic Party is secretly controlled by gay, Hollywood Jews.

90% of the entertainment industry's donations go to Democrats.

The good news here is that the Democrats are incompetent, and for the first time since the 2010 elections, I'm glad the Republicans have the House.

2012-01-19 12:22:00 PM
Since this bill will never get a chance to pass, and because it was really only about extracting money from the entertainment industry for the upcoming election, and because the number of people that will not vote for a candidate who supported this is tiny at best; I think the supporters of the bill played is whole thing very well.

2012-01-19 12:22:49 PM
Well look at that. G'head Dems, double down on that SOPA stuff.

Dodd issued a statement condemning the protest as a "dangerous gimmick," and chastised Internet companies for abusing their freedoms in the marketplace.

EatHam issued a statement condemning Dodd as a "dangerous prick," and chastised the Senate for abusing their power in government.

I'll pass on the "Progressive" propaganda, thanks. I'm against SOPA and PIPA. Should I be for it like these Democrats?

GaryPDX: I'll pass on the "Progressive" propaganda, thanks.

Actually the first half of that book is about the idea of mental framing, or read Iriving Kristol for the same effect.

GaryPDX: I'm against SOPA and PIPA. Should I be for it like these Democrats?

I referring to your subconscious need to shape an argument into the frame drilled into you by talking points. Instead of understanding the issue as whole you condense your thoughts to the partisan, and exactly like the libs you hate so much, you lose the larger perspective making it easier for those issuing the talking points to control how you view the world.

ultraholland: It would be nice if the Dems were grifting the industry but I won't hold my breath.

They were all grifting the industry to some extent, here's an issue that both sides can draw millions from and has no hope of passing. So you have corporate interests backing the GOP, and individual interests backing Democrats. It's essentially what the gay marriage amendment issue is. By saying you are for it gets you millions from fundies, and saying your against it gives you millions from liberals. No one has the illusion of it passing, but it pays good.

lol..I have yet to actually see one of these mythical emails. I play a part and it's mostly about mocking hypocracy no matter where it comes from. And you know what? Hypocracy is very abundant these days, it's a target rich environment. Well, except for RON PAUL.

The small government conservative that wants to make abortion and gay marriage illegal?

what_now: The small government conservative that wants to make abortion and gay marriage illegal?

Well if I'm understanding him correctly he just wants to allow states to do that if they want to. You know, small state governments are always the answer, regardless of how big they want to become to their own citizenry.

God, subby is in such a flamboyantly butthurt mood today.

Democrats are so horrible. Why why why will everyone elect them next November? It's just not FAIR.

Far and away, the top beneficiary in the Senate from interest groups that support PIPA is Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-CA),

Why, that's the same state the movie industry is from!

Both political parties are wholly owned by business interests, just different business interests. I don't think it will be possible to change this fact while working within the system.

2012-01-19 01:49:16 PM
Part of the issue is that Silcon Valley and Hollywood are in the same state, and, in general, when their interests diverge, the two Democratic Senators for California tend to back Hollywood over Silcon Valley. If Silcon Valley was in another state and it had two Democratic Senators, they would be lobbying their fellow Democratic Senators to oppose the bill, but as it stands, the only lobbying is from the pro-Hollywood side.

This is not an issue in the House, since the House members who represent Silcon Valley are different than the ones that represent Hollywood.

Stupid. Obama already indicated he wouldn't support (new window) the sister bill, SOPA.

Sadly it seems that it didn't take long for Al Franken to change from a courageous, outspoken truth teller to a corporate owned lawmaker. sigh...

The runner-up is Sen. Al Franken (D-MN), who's taken $777,383 from PIPA-supporting interest groups, and has co-sponsored the bill since May 2011

You were cool, Al. Now you can go fark yourself, you farking whore.

It's just the reality of things, you know. Every politician is a bought and paid for whore, the only difference is that the businesses that the Dems are owned by are generally unconcerned with what you do in your bedroom and/or the gays or abortion.

The only way to fix this is to make all elections publicly funded efforts with no private money allowed.

Yup, she represents San Francisco (not quite Silicon Valley but close enough).

This is a non-partisan issue. Basically, each Congressperson (Senator and House Rep) is determining whose money is more important for their re-election: Silicon Valley's or Hollywood's.

Another moral of this story is that rich tech people need to up their political contrabutions to overtake Hollywood's.

What is the solution to this money problem? Limit free speech, a dictatorship, or deal with it.

It isn't "critical" of anything.

It's just subby again, hoping everyone will vote Republican next fall, and he's pulling out every stop he's got left.

Thanks for supporting his pain.

No, I'll actually be voting for a handful of Democrats and, in races where my vote doesn't matter, people to the left of the Democrats.

I think what's obvious is that you think politics are like football. Root, root, root for the home team even if they're being crooked bastards, right?

The day we get idiots like you to stay home instead of voting is the day the rest of us with some damn brains might be able to get this country on the right track.

Infernalist: The only way to fix this is to make all elections publicly funded efforts with no private money allowed.

Hey, buddy. Corporations are people and money is speech, that is simply a part of U.S. law as determined by the highest court in the land. If a corporation/person wants to send a little of their wealth to the candidate who would best serve their interest who are we to stop them? This is a democracy, one corporation/person, one large campaign contribution/vote. What, you expect Government to work only for the benefit of living, breathing people? That sounds an awful lot like socialism to me.
