In this day and age, you can get hard hitting or you can get unbiased. You have to pick one.

That's adorable that you think anything will come of this subby.

I don't like News Corp as much as the next guy, but I do know that if News Corp did screw up, they have enough buddies in Washington to help cover it up like nothing happened.

The thing to know about the News Corporation is that only about 1% of their profits come from their "news" operations (newspapers, Fox News, etc.) but 99% of their headaches come from it. It's only a matter of time before the real businessmen wrest control from Rupert and start concentrating on the bottom line rather than playing king-maker. When that happens, expect to see their "news" operations spun off.

Without the subsidies of the rest of the News Corporation, we'll see how long these "news" operations survive in their current form. My hunch is not long.

There are multiple links to the Guardian and Telegraph.co.uk webpages with actual news stories and excerpts pulled directly from those sources.

Something tells me you don't actually ever read Daily Kos stories since anything more than a personal blog/rant has multiple direct quotes and links.

Unless they hacked into a dead 8 year old girl's voicemail account here in the US, nothing will come of this.

Just like it did in the UK.

DailyKos isn't intended to be journalism, nor do they make any pretense at being unbiased.

Now back to the topic of NewsCorp hacking phones on US soil...

Actually, if they hacked into the voicemails of, say, 9-11 victims, that would be way, way worse, in the public's eyes

This. And the average Fox Viewer could care less how they get their narrative.

Like the pallets of hard cash that disappeared in Iraq, this too will go unnoticed or believed.

Perhaps, although Fox News did try their best to dismiss them as money hungry whores.

Yep, News Corp had done this for years and before the only thing the government did was tell them to stop it.

It was only after the public outrage over the fact they hacked into a dead 8 year old girl's voicemail account and messed around with the messages that the British Government was forced to do more about it.

No but see it's okay because the whole thing made Rupert Murdoch feel bad. Probably mostly the whole "getting caught" part but still. He felt bad!

We'll get another comment from Rupert or Ailes that says that even thought they exercise total control over their editorial content and reporting at the media outlets they own and/or oversee, and take the bonuses and profits during successful years, they have nothing to do with day-to-day operations at companies they were hired to run.

Such integrity in the 1%, oh it touches my heart.

No...I've just been following politics for way too long. I'm in my mid 20's and I've followed politics since high school. It depresses me but I still follow it anyway.

Go figure.

The arrest of 'low level nobodies' is a common practice when you're trying for the big boys.

You arrest the low level drones, get them to roll over on their managers/bosses. Arrest the managers, get some of them to roll over on the Executive officers. Arrest the Executives, get them to roll over on the Board members. Arrest the Board members and get them to roll over on Murdoch.

It's a long process and not likely to succeed, but that's the basic plan.

exactly. no executives will get pinched in this. not with jail time. they'll receive a slap on the wrist and have to promise never to do it again.
of course civil suits will be a different matter.

Remember when Senator Barton apologized to BP after the oil spill? That's what'll happen if Fox is ever brought to a congressional hearing.

Why would the public care if Fox hacked US phones?

We don't seem to care that our own government does it.

It depends. Infernalist got it right. They go after the low level folks. They have nothing to gain by protecting the higher-ups. A $40,000/year jobs isn't worth 10 years in jail. If the phone tapping is bigger than just Jude Law then it will be exposed.

The phone hacking admission is serious... but the more serious problem for them are the admissions of bribing officials in other countries. That is a RICO violation, and could allow the federal government to chop up News Corp and sell off its component parts to pay for the investigation.

2012-01-19 01:28:36 PM
Obama going after News Corp in an election year may cause some serious backlash. It's better not to anything than do something right now.

Besides phone hacking should be allowed by the press. If the press need some credible news source, why not phone hack? To me it's perfectly legal and should be encouraged. Mark Zuckerberg was a hacker before he founded Facebook and he's worth billions.

When the News of The World hacks broke, FOX basically mentioned it in one sentence, then pivoted to talk on hacking in general.

It's not that anyone would be made an unperson or anything spy thriller-y. It's that NewsCorp has the money and the megaphone to ensure that any talk about this is whitewashed or minimized, and the Liebrul MSM Media is reluctant to turn on their own profession. If FOX can't bury this, they'll just try to spin it or obfuscate until it becomes a "he said/she said" situation in enough people's eyes.

Are you insinuating Obama gets votes from Fox News viewers?

And your second paragraph is just ridiculous. The gov't should subpoena telcos for information, should it be warranted. "Perfectly legal and should be encouraged" -WTF??? please, stop with your uninformed BS.

I'm not entirely sure how to respond to this.

For starters, NewsCorp has NEVER been a friend of President Obama's, so why would the White House care? Also, violating the privacy of others is never acceptable. "Hacking" is far from legal, and should be dealt with sharply.

but then it would look like they are lashing out in retaliation or as a diversion. I think Obama might have stumbled on a winning formula.

Like cancelling the pipeline. If the GOP is biatching and whining no matter what you do, you might as well fark them over every chance you get. It won't make things worse (impossibe), and the attacks from the Right would begin to look self-serving and petty as opposed to "representing" Americans.

GOP: "Obama is bad because of XYZ"
Obama: "You are just sore because of the tanning tax, hurting your pipeline investments and putting an end to public sex at the airports"
