A Fark Handle: sadly RON PAUL is probably the best candidate in the republican primaries now...

This is what happens when you allow a rabid subset of the population to pick candidates for the rest of us to vote for in the general election.

I would love nothing more than to see the presidential primary system dumped in favor of all the candidates being on the general election ballot along with a preferential tallying system. But that would allow moderates and third party candidates to flourish, and the two major US political parties want none of that.

Do that over 17 in Myrtle Beach on July 4 and see some REAL traffic-snarling.

Except the balloon would have to say "Free buffets and golf".

"Ron Paul", not so much.

Depends on if you're talking about 2012 Republicans or Eisenhower/Goldwater Republicans. Most of the latter have become independents because they don't really have a voice in the party anymore. But they still lean right.

FTA: the operator of the hot air balloon, Remus Toppeta of Greer

Oh Lordy! Uncle Remus. Really, that's what we call him.

We actually have separate insurance for balloons. It's expensive. My premiums topped $1,000/yr two years ago and are still climbing. You can count the number of providers on the fingers of one hand.

I doubt Uncle Remus can file any sort of claim, but somebody whose progress was blocked because of his bonehead move of setting up a static tether on a frontage road might.

/have landed on roads many times, never got a ticket
//doing a similar static tether in New Orleans sometime in the near future, but on a field, not a road, very near I-10 up from Xavier U.

Yes, the professor at Standford and every economist is in the pocket of big banks. Only RON PAUL's supporters see through the massive conspiracy.

I call shenanigans, had that been a Romney balloon, it would have been allowed to stay, mind you the only difference between a hot air balloon and Romney is that the balloon's hot air is useful since you can bank on it not flip-flopping in a completely opposite direction.

Bottom line Americans need to take Ron Paul very seriously, or they'll all be staring at this...

media.salon.com

wondering why they never took Paul more seriously, when their money is now worthless, their afraid to speak their mind, and they let the shills in a pubic chat forum sway their opinion without actually looking deeper into why Ron Paul has gained unstoppable momentum amongst those who DO pay attention

Blue Dogs are increasingly rare, too. Just accept the fact that both parties are fringe nutjobs.

ChubbyTiger: Blue Dogs are increasingly rare, too. Just accept the fact that both parties are fringe nutjobs.

That's kinda the point. Why should moderates, centralists, independents, etc... be subject to the choices made by a few fringe voters during the primaries?

And you can't run an independent or third party candidate with the current voting system. If they lean left, they'll cannibalize votes from the Democrat. If they lean right, they'll do the same for the Republican. The person with the lone ideology will win the vote. That's why you need a proportional voting system, too. Give the Green Party dude your #1 vote, the Democrat your #2 vote and none for the Republican. Or give the Libertarian your #1 vote and Mickey Mouse your #2 vote. Whatever. Just axe this single vote, winner takes all crap.

Ron Paul is running for president of the Federal Government of the United States. The president doesn't create the laws-- he could never successfully amend the constitution to include a "Sanctity of Life Act", void out Roe V Wade, end Public Schools, or do most other things people call him crazy for.

What he COULD do is save hundreds of thousands of American lives-- The people whose lives have been ruined by long prison sentences for non-violent drug offenses; The people who are overseas fighting in perpetual, undeclared wars and conflicts. He COULD stop the NDAA and the Patriot Act. He COULD veto any huge new corporate bailouts that came across his desk. None of you can touch that shiat. Call him "batshiat crazy" all you want. Just give him 4 years-- 4 years of REAL CHANGE, JUST FOUR! Then, after that, elect the next guy to be the status quo you'll love in an empty suit who will bring back all your favorite little unconstitutional pet programs that Paul might have managed to disrupt during his single term.

As for the Gold Standard, it doesn't matter if our currency is backed by gold or by bologna, as long as it is resistant to inflation and doesn't allow congress to do an end-run around the public or drown us in debt when seeking funds for pet projects. I guess the dollar is going to need to die a little more quickly before this hits home, and that is such a shame.

Me too, I'm for IRV all the way. The two party system does so much harm to the political process that it's just jaw dropping.
