A Fark Handle: they should add a donation line at the end of the 1040 tax form. that way it would be easy for folks to put their money were their mouth is and pay the higher taxes they support. what's the downside? someone donates? good, we need the money.

I don't think the people we need paying more in taxes use that form.

yeah, smeone should have challenged buffet to match percentage of wealth forked over. The first challenge was like brontosaurus challenging me to see who can take the bigger shiat. Buffet has got to have a net worth that is 50 times the size of every republican in house and senate combined. Almost any congressman who is worth $1,000,000 could probably comfortably afford to give away 5% of his net worth, which would be $50,000. for Buffet 5% is 2.5 billion.

ah, biatching and moaning over minor shiat while ignoring the big glaring dinosaur shiat that is sitting in the same room, the true staples of Farking.

who cares what % of his wealth it is at this point, he's nearly the only man out there with a net worth over (some ungodly uncountable amount that is more than $10mill noted here) even doing something about it. Can he afford to pay more, yes, but that is not what this is about and completely muddles the fact that he is even offering to match other payments.

Instead of biatching about how little money that is for buffet, why aren't you biatching about how many republican reps have seemingly ignored this challenge so far, and why the democrats haven't asked to get in on it as well? Maybe get a majority of the senate and congress to donate 15% of their pay, and have buffet match that amount or 15% of his pay (not worth, unless you want to hold everyone to the same deal) for the year. Hell, if they really hate Buffet, they could try to raise or donate as much as they possibly can in order to hurt Buffet's net worth and/or show him up.

but nope, biatching about a minor point that ignores the larger one is so much more important, so please continue.

But Tax breaks for ultra rich during war we could do without

WHICH IS BUFFET'S POINT

Oh, I'm not disagreeing. But in 2000, there were serious predictions that by this year, the United States debt might have been eliminated entirely. Economists believe that the tax cuts were a big part of why that didn't happen, but not all of it.

I only read that story this afternoon, so it was on my mind.

The amount Buffett is able to put in is inconsequential. The whole argument went something like this:

Republicans: THE DEBT IS KILLING THE NATION!
Buffett: We need to raise taxes on rich people like myself, in order to pay down the debt.
Republicans: Why don't you just pay more yourself, that should help pay down the debt without raising taxes.
Buffett: Fine, but since you guys care so much about the debt, how about a little gentleman's agreement. You cut a check to pay down the debt, and I will match that. Goes triple for turtle-boy.
Rigell: CHALLENGE ACCEPTED!
Rest of the Republicans so far: Why would we do that? It won't help one bit, even though one of our core arguments for the whole "just write a check" snark was that such a contribution should help.

End Result: Republicans are essentially destroying their own talking points about how charity and voluntary contributions will pull us out of debt, because even they don't think that such an approach would ever work. The whole exchange is proving that pretty much the ONLY way to solve the debt crisis is to raise taxes, because relying on individual contributions would be like draining Lake Superior with a tablespoon.

The Face Of Oblivion:
In the present situation, Warren Buffet did something inconsequential relative to both his overall wealth and the overall U.S. debt, and moreover stands to earn back personally more than he laid out no matter what happens because he bought some amount of positive perception by ideologically sympathetic people. Everyone either challenging him or responding to his gambit is engaging in exactly the same type of behavior. This is partisan bickering as win-win proposition, all around.

The point is that Buffet thinks that the tax rates for the rich should be higher. You know like in the days -before George W Bush?

Nope. It means, back up what you're saying with action. There is NO consideration for the amount, which is beside the point at any rate.

Yes, but then he would have to limit his donation to one person. If he said, "Hey, I'll match percentage of net worth for each republican in house and senate who writes a check to lower the deficit." You get 20 guys to write a check for 5% of their salary, and he has given every single dime he owns to the government.

So yes, in gesture he could have matched salary with this one guy and lowered the deficit by 2.5 billion and hoped that the rest of the politicians would do their part too. Or he could have matched it exactly, and made the offer that he would also match other contributions until April 20th, and even match three to one any donations made by McConnell, who is one of the biggest voices going, "Hey rich-guy, we don't want to pay higher taxes, quit trying to get them to take more money from us rich people! You give the government your money if you want to!" I assume that Buffett is hoping to ease them into agreeing to a little higher taxes to help out country.

To everyone bithcing that Warren Buffett didn't give more you have no one to blame but the people in office and get them to pony up.

This is the only guy that took up the challenge. and Warren Buffett was big enough to take the man at his word without any other proof that he did this.

Also well done to Rep. Scott Rigell, a Republican representing Virginia.
He clearly practices what he preaches in office.
