A Fark Handle: Crudbucket: A Fark Handle: they should add a donation line at the end of the 1040 tax form. that way it would be easy for folks to put their money were their mouth is and pay the higher taxes they support. what's the downside? someone donates? good, we need the money.

It will cost $100 million billion to print new 1040 forms with the donation line.

fine do it for the 2012 1040.

/and changing the pdfs would be cheap

In other news, some people still paper file?

Also, consider that if Warren Buffet actually did manage to "put out the fire," treating the symptoms and not the causes of this whole mess we would have learned nothing, changed nothing, and spark the whole thing off again in a very brief time.

I've been saying for ages that, if Buffet wants to write a check to the treasury, there's absolutely nothing stopping him from doing it. He's been going on and on about how the wealthy don't pay enough taxes. I'm glad to see he finally figured out that he doesn't have to wait until laws are passed that force him to pay more. Sure, for him, it's a token amount for him but I'm glad to see the precedent being set and I'm glad he's made it a challenge saying he'll match "donations".

Wrong. When he says that the rich aren't paying enough taxes... he is not just speaking for himself. You seem to be confused with the difference between one very rich person and all very rich people.

A small number of rich people voluntarily paying extra money to the treasury doesn't have anything to do with increasing involuntary taxes on the rest of the rich people. It in no way interferes with the ability of the government to increase taxes. I don't see what the confusion is here.

Because People in power are Stupid: Hurrrr de Durrrr.

WHICH IS BUFFET'S POINT

Oh, I'm not disagreeing. But in 2000, there were serious predictions that by this year, the United States debt might have been eliminated entirely. Economists believe that the tax cuts were a big part of why that didn't happen, but not all of it.

I only read that story this afternoon, so it was on my mind.

2012-01-20 02:59:37 AM
Why did nobody notice that Buffet challenged to match any donations from the entire Republican Congress and a 3:1 odd against Mitch McConnell. $49K is a starting point, he's just calling their bluff. Good on him. If any billionaire wants play chicken with Congress, I'd rather it's Buffet and not that Redcoat Murdoch.

2012-01-20 04:00:55 AM
I wonder how much nose candy our Congressmen can get for $48,000?

2012-01-20 04:11:14 AM
Actually, Mr Buffet is being very selfish in his words and actions.

If the Washington pols continue to operate with such a huge defecit than our economy eventually collapses to one degree or another.

Buffet wants more taxation to help reduce the defecit which may in turn improve the nation's economic outlook.

A good economy will greatly increase Mr Buffet's personal wealth.

So, Warren wants other people to pay more so he can become even wealthier.

Which of course misses the point

We could tax the rich at 100% and ended both wars and not solve the problem
which is not low taxes on the rich but uncontrolled government spending.

Tax the rich! Tax 'em at 100%! That Still Leaves U.S. With $839B Deficit (new window)

Warren Buffett is still full of sh*t, and has not put his money where his mouth is in any meaningful sense of the phrase. He advocates people that people around his level of wealth should be taxed more, but doesn't send a check, and mutters on about how a 'voluntary tax system won't work.'
When he's finally called on it by someone noteworthy, he challenges them to write a check before he does- even though said group of people make a order of magnitude or three less per year than he does.

So basically, to Warren, it's morally imperitive that people of his wealth be forced to pay more, but not so important that he can be bothered to part with the money of his own free will. When challenged, he makes a rubbish counter challenge that's irrelevant to the original 'put your money where your mouth is' problem he faces.

2012-01-20 09:25:01 AM
There's really no pleasing some people. You tell him to write a check. He writes the check, and you guys say it isn't big enough.
