Actual PPP poll. (new window)

Is there an option for "major network news is too annoying to watch"?

This (from DarnoKonrad's link) is interesting:

Despite having a reputation for appealing to the left MSNBC actually polls in only 6th place among Democrats at 8%, finishing slightly behind even Fox News' 9%. Independents split almost evenly between Fox News (29%) and PBS (27%).
I don't watch TV but I'll listen to the audio of the PBS Newshour which is broadcast on a local public radio station.

Fox is also the least trusted TV news source for 34% of voters, followed by Comedy Central at 16%

Whatever "most trusted" might mean, I listen to Morning Edition, All things Considered, and News Hour for no other reason than it's free of shouting, contrived adversarialism, hyperbole, and sensationalism.

The rest of the media is only marginally better than watching bum fights.

I get most of my non-web news from NPR for much the same reason. It's not necessarily trustworthy or unbiased, but it's usually not actively annoying. I also listen to BBC (aired on NPR here) but I turn it off when they do an argumentative interview.

It's amusing to see the Right go after MSNBC so vehemently, whereas few liberals actually even watch that channel with any regularity (I think I've flipped it on once in the last 6 months because I was bored).

Not so with conservatives, they avidly consume FoxNews on a regular basis.

2012-01-19 09:55:56 AM
As a commenter so ably pointed out, the trust-worthiness seems to mesh with the viewship, which is mind blowing to me. I would have expected that people would say that the news network they watch the most is the one they trust the least.

"I watch it, but I don't believe a word of it".

This poll doesn't reveal anything meaningful.

2012-01-19 09:58:35 AM
How much of FOX's viewership can be attributed to a combination of bitter asshats who put it on in public places like doctor's offices and truck stops and those who are too afraid of their shambling Smog Monster wives to watch real porn so the only option is the occasional Meghan Kelley panty shot?

I_Am_Weasel: the trust-worthiness seems to mesh with the viewship

Not really. As PPP states: "Democrats trust everything except Fox News. Republicans meanwhile don't trust anything except Fox News, and Independents are with the Democrats."

So you've only got one group of people "meshing" their ideology with their network. Fox Viewers. Which isn't surprising, it's almost pure ideological propaganda.

I would just like to say that Godzilla vs the Smog Monster was the first "film" I saw in a theater. It was a double feature with Frogs.

I would also like to say that I watch television news primarily to laugh at how they mislead and misconstrue and outright miss the point all in the name of fun and profit.

The boss has FoxNews on in the reception area. I feel bad for the receptionist. She changes it to CNN when he's not around.

Fox News. They have the hottest babes.

It's scary looking at the results of the survey broken down by ideology. The average difference of trust going from very liberal to moderate on the spectrum is about 12%. Going from moderate to somewhat reactionary, the numbers fall off a farking cliff with an average difference of trust at about 33%. Even scarier is looking at just the very reactionary results: other than PBS and Fox News, a three-fourths supermajority distrust every news source, and PBS was merely distrusted by a two-thirds supermajority. Fox News, of course, was trusted by a four-fifths supermajority.

It's impressive as to just how polarized the crosstabs for that survey are when it comes to Fox News, compared to any other news source listed in the survey.

Basically, if you're very conservative, you're getting your news ONLY from Fox News.

I didn't need a poll to tell me that. All I have to do is go on Facebook or read the comments from the Fark Independents on here.

Or somewhat reactionary. 65% of them said it was their favorite source. Not as impressive as 78% of very reactionary people saying Fox News is their favorite source, but still really high.

There's no deal, because the local McD's franchises here have figured it out. As this poll shows, some people are going to mistrust your news source, no matter what. Put on Fox? You piss of the commies. Put on MSNBC? You piss off the fascists.

So, their TVs are tuned to the Weather Channel. That's smart business, IMO.

Aren't conservatives pissed off about that channel too because they talk about Climate Change?

Still a smart move though. The more I thought about it, the more I remember a McDonalds in a college town having CNN on instead.

Things that should surprise me but didn't.

1. It's commonplace to lump Comedy Central in with CNN, Fox, etc.

2. For all the harumphing from the right about MSNBC, liberals don't actually watch or care about it, unlike conservatives and their devotion to Fox's sexy 24/7/365 all-liberal-hate all-the-time network.

Jealous. I'm only able to watch it on my computer since I'm 900 miles from the border so thankfully CBC and CTV both stream their entire newscasts.

I don't even bother with Global.

What would be the responses if we asked what is the most trusted religion? If Christianity comes out 80% the most trusted, does that make it right?

If you are going to use this type of metric, you can only ask people for a trusted news source that is NOT their primary source of news.

I don't believe any news network is unbiased, and even reputable news sources have had reporters who falsify news, not to mention make mistakes.

In the "news" category most of what I use NPR for is the six(+/-) minute news summary every hour. What do you pack into six minutes? Is "Critics call on Senator Bedfellow to explain his refusal to deny having Jimmy Hoffa killed" worth 45 seconds of that time? How about the president's policy speech the night before? How about the president's speech from last night, the day before the election without equal time for the opposition party?
