The trick is to keep your finger in the last page in case you make the wrong choice.

He believed Vietnam's Ho Chi Minh was a nationalist who should be supported, and almost worshipped Pridi Banomyong, Thailand's pro-democracy statesman.

Well if that doesn't get the trolls hopping around here, nothing will.

The general consensus in Thailand is that Thompson was hit and killed by a truck driver while walking along the road - the driver, understandably afraid of the repercussions, hid the body in the jungle where it was never found.

But, a boring tale of another drunk driver killing someone is not as good a tourist attraction as CIA abductions or tiger food.

a few years back there was a chain called Royal Silk that was going gang busters. they had figured out how to increase production which made the luxurious fabric much more affordable.

don't know what became of them.

Like a number of like-minded Americans at the time, Thompson was investigated by the FBI for suspected "un-American activities," and "although Thompson once had been extremely valuable to U.S. intelligence, the agency finally put out a 'burn notice,' on him, warning all employees to stay away from him," the book notes.

Ha - Exactly what I came to say, this 'whodunnit' always bugs me. Public record makes it clear that there is no longer any mystery.. he got hit by a damn truck by a rural guy that was riddled with guilt until he confessed years later. Everyone just ignores this because the fictionalized version is juicier. It must be embarassing if you think of yourself as a serious historian/author/journalist and you allow yourself to ignore the facts, whether in a book... or just writing this article.
