But still too proud to take government handouts.

wat

FTA: His weekly unemployment benefits had expired. His food stamps had been trimmed to less than $50 a week.

This man has obviously run afoul of the Job Creators. You mess with the bull, you get the horns.

2012-01-19 09:42:01 AM
He took out a cigarette and turned on the TV....

Murdock came back to his house a few hours later with a six-pack of Bud Ice

Smokes, cable and beer are not necessities. No further comment necessary...other than that the second half of TFA is behind a subscriber wall, so we have no idea how many lottery tickets he buys.

I feel sorry for this guy, I really do. He works hard, plays by the rules, and is getting kicked to the curb by the system. And in SC, the state government is too busy finding ways to hate brown people and stamp out non-existent voter fraud to do anything about it.

That said though, this guy did (and continues to make) some bad choices, such as dropping out of high school, spending what little money he has on smokes and beer, etc.

Grand_Moff_Joseph: spending what little money he has on smokes and beer

A wise man would call up his broker and invest that $8.

He should be proud to be an American, where at least he knows he's free.

WaPo is certainly doing no favors to SC or the unemployed by picking this guy as the model. High-school dropout from a family of idiots, no financial planning sense, no skills... this article is a summation of every GOP candidate's assessment of the poor being inferior, good-for-nothings.

He can't be too down and out if he has that enormous television set.

Subby: "Out of work. Out of money. Out of health care."

You said "out of work" three times...

Poor? He has a tv and a refrigerator.

A refrigerator, people.

Gulper Eel: Smokes, cable and beer are not necessities.

turning on a tv doesn't mean it has cable. the other 2 I agree.

Still, if we can bail out wall street bankers with hundreds of billions of tax payer bootstraps, we should be able to help the little guys too.

You live the life of an unemployed poor guy for a year or so and then see if you feel the same.

South Carolina, wassup?!?"

idiocracy

Why should he vote in the primary? None of the Republican candidates will help his situation.

Sigh...and here's his brother wife.

Miss South Carolina

How about a little light dusting. That might help.

It mentions him tuning to the Weather Channel, which is only on cable.

Damn! It sucks to be him. Next time I feel down about living in Arkansas I'll remind myself it could be worse I could be stuck in South Carolina.

He's got a refrigerator, for god's sake. He's loaded. What the hell is he doing collecting food stamps?

I suppose he's also got a microwave and a TV.

It's a shame that he is so lazy and refuses to work. He should blame himself, since all my Republican friends assure me that there are plenty of jobs for anyone who wants to work.

Wendy's Chili: Grand_Moff_Joseph: spending what little money he has on smokes and beer

A wise man would call up his broker and invest that $8.

The joys of self-medication.

For those who've never been there: smokes and booze are what the uninsured, low end of the socioeconomic ladder get instead of professional treatment for depression. They're necessities in the "keeps the poor bastards from giving in and going postal" sense.

2012-01-19 10:18:58 AM
Maybe know would be a good time to get that GED.

What the fark does he expect?

He has no education, didn't even finish high school, and he wants a job. That's fine there peaches, but lacking even a goddamned G-E-farking-D means the prospects are shiat, will continue to be shiat, if not get worse over time.

Take the farking handout, get some education... something, farking ANYTHING.

Then go 'swim' to your heart's content.

I can't stand reading stories like this.

Not because "Oh, I feel bad for the poor and downtrodden", but because of this:

FTA:

He had earned as much as $700 a week in the last job he had, and instead of saving for himself he had spent on everyone else. He took his mother out to lunch once a week in Conway. He gave his sister, a single mother, a few twenties every month to help her support twin daughters. He hosted barbecues for his friends and started dating a woman 11 years his junior. Every time she came over to his house, he would pretend to run an errand but sneak out to fill her gas tank instead.

I can be ok with the supporting his sister and visiting his mother - but seriously, if you're earning $700/week (even if it's before taxes) PUT SOME MONEY AWAY SO THIS shiat DOESN'T HAPPEN.

Argh.

Jake Havechek: He should be proud to be an American, where at least he knows he's free.

This actually made me a little sad.

Wasteland: The joys of self-medication.

Yep. We all do it. It's just easier to justify for yourself than someone else.

The "little guys" are too small to succeed. The unemployed should kill themselves it's the patriotic thing to do.

It's South Carolina. The boonies of South Carolina. $700/week is like billions in the real world.

So... When all of the candidates are self-serving liars who care nothing about the working-class, and their only mission is to acquire money and power for themselves through whatever means necessary... And if by some miracle an honest person were to run, they would either be crushed during the electoral phase or rendered ineffective by the other 99% of slimeballs in office... Where is the big incentive to vote?

The working class are merely disposable worker robots allowed to exist for the sole purpose of making the rich richer and feeding the government by paying taxes. And that's a status quo they will maintain.

calm like a bomb: You live the life of an unemployed poor guy for a year or so and then see if you feel the same.

I paid my dues. Stonemason's gofer, road-kill picker-upper, golf course clubhouse flunky, convenience-store clerk, and my first full-time gig paid $14k/year which was less than most people's unemployment compensation at the time. Found a cheap-ass studio apartment, but it was out in the sticks with no cable available. So I did without. And did without beer. Wine was strictly in the $7/bottle range and only for when I had a date. Ate lots of ramen noodles and canned veggies. I stayed at that apartment for eight years even after I worked my way up to a better-paying job, and I could have gotten a nicer place because the landlord never raised the rent.

This guy isn't some middle-manager whose job got outsourced out of existence. This guy made a serious of choices that virtually guaranteed he'd be in the position he is now.

Not that I think college is for everybody, but dropping out of high school is a major dumbass move. It is unsurprising that he also makes other dumb choices.

Forgot_my_password_again: turning on a tv doesn't mean it has cable.

The Weather Channel (noted in TFA) is not a rabbit-ears channel.

Well imagine him going for a job interview and they discover he doesn't know what happened on the latest Seinfeld episode? It could cost him the job.

Conway farmers always have needs for people to help with cotton and tobacco harvests. It's hard work, but it'll keep you fed. I used to pick the tobacco during the summer months I had off from school for my buddys family. Not saying it's a dream job or would pay great, but it's SC buddy and you live in Horry County. Most working class white folks there came from yeoman farming families who were dirt poor since they got off the boat.

Yeah, because his vote will make a big difference in his life.

"He had worked six days a week ever since he dropped out of high school at 16.."

And there you have it folks. Make sure to tip the bartenders on the way out the door.
