This particular cover is less obnoxious than some. Now bearing in mind that I hate this song, that's a high compliment to ol' Dolly.

/But Jolene is better.

If it's the version I saw before, it works because she's not trying to out-rock Led Zeppelin.

Usually hate covers. I'm OK with this.

They got through the first 3 gears decently, but those banjos were just too much drag in 4th.

Yeah I guess she has, I mean have you ever seen Dolly Parton live from Tijuana? That girl could give lessons on how to do a Donkey Show while singing.

If this was recorded in 2002, why does it appear that someone used a 1982 style cam corder? Holy crap, were they afraid to point an HD camera at her?

I like Dolly, and could listen to her all day long (sing, not talk, she's pretty much a blithering idiot), but this recording just blows chunks.

This one's even better: she looks sort of like Stevie Nicks, but with huge tatas.

Does anyone know if she does her own writing/arranging?

She really is good, a consummate professional. Too bad she took the tatas and hairspray route early on, because it makes her a bit of a joke.

"It's a good thing I was born a girl, otherwise I'd be a drag queen".
She has a typically hillbilly, self-deprecating wit and she's been laughing for years, all the way to the bank.

csb time! Back in the day, when i was a sound guy, I worked on one of her shows. Spent the afternoon having a really good lobster\clam bake with her and her crew. Shes probably the nicest, sweetest, least pretentious person you'll ever meet.

She does. She's a savvy business woman, as well. "In the Ghetto" was the only song Elvis wasn't able to buy.
Check out the " Just Because I'm a Woman" tribute album.

lulz...like 30 years ago she was on Johnny Carson, and the subject of her boobage came up. Johnny said,"i'd give a years pay to see what's under that dress."

CSS time:

Last year my parents went to a party where she made an appearance and my mother got a picture with her. I always knew that Dolly was a petite woman but I never knew just how much. My mom, being 5'2"-5'3" was almost towering over her.

mightybaldking: She really is good, a consummate professional. Too bad she took the tatas and hairspray route early on, because it makes her a bit of a joke.

Ummm... [That'sTheJoke.jpg]

Her whole schtick was that when she was a little girl living in a shack in the Smokies with rags for clothes, she'd say that she'd go into town with her mamma and see the town floozey with big hair, long red nails, tight clothes and painted make up. Her mother would point her out and say "Dolly. That woman there is trash." To which she'd reply "Mamma. When I grow up, I wanna be trash too!"

And I love me some Betty White.

Although I'm not a fan of country music, I actually have a lot of respect for Dolly Parton. She's one performer who's always remained true to her instincts (even when they lead to stylistic missteps) and has never forgotten her roots.

Anyone ever been to Sevierville and seen the statue of her in front of the courthouse?

From Wikipedia:

"Parton is a successful songwriter, having begun by writing country-music songs with strong elements of folk music, based upon her upbringing in humble mountain surroundings, and reflecting her family's evangelical-Christian background. Her songs "Coat of Many Colors", "I Will Always Love You" and "Jolene" have become classics in the field, as have a number of others. As a songwriter, she is also regarded as one of country music's most-gifted storytellers, with many of her narrative songs based on persons and events from her childhood. On November 4, 2003, Dolly Parton was honored as a BMI Icon at the 2003 BMI Country Awards. She has earned over 35 BMI Pop and Country Awards throughout her prolific songwriting career. In 2001, she was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame."

According to various other websites (which may all be getting their info from the same place), she has written over 5,000 songs.

I remember Dolly Parton & Porter Wagoner doing Breeze detergent commercials. Unlike those cheap bastards at Guiness, Breeze actually did give you a free towel.

I still think Led Zep did the best cover of Stairway.

It's Dolly Parton's 66th birthday and dadgummit - she's earned the right to do Stairway all country-like if she wants to

Damn right she did, subby. She brings me back to a time when it was possible to listen to rock and roll, country, and rap. Nowadays rap is all about being ghetto and saying the N word to reinforce racism, and country is all about how God loves only the U.S.A. and how all the brown-skinned people or anyone that thinks differently need to be nuked or shot Texas-style. (Also back in the day listening to country didn't make me have the overwhelming urge to buy a Ford truck.)

It was okay to listen to Kenny Rogers and have a blast with fun stuff like Run DMC while mainly listening to "rock". But now every genre is almost fiercely isolationist. About the only people ever to overcome this or hold onto their cross-genre appeal are Johnny Cash and the Beastie Boys.

Also mad props to Aerosmith doing "Walk this way" with Run DMC.

/I'd provide a link for easy clicking satisfaction but they all either have horrible amounts of advertising or take-down notices and such.
//hmm. "Johnny Cash and the Beastie Boys" would make the awesomest fictional band ever.

When she was doing shows at the Golden Nugget here in Las Vegas, my little brother who had been a security guard at the time, was assigned to escort her wherever she went. According to him, Dolly was a wild one.

And I'll leave it at that.
