(My Fox DC) Obvious Fox News notices that comic books have a lot more sex and violence since back when they were young. "It's sort of like a fictionalized Playboy for kids at its worst"   (myfoxdc.com) divider line 70

If only there was some sort of code the comic books could subscribe to, maybe a "Comic Code Authority", that could protect our youth from this dangerous new threat to their innocence and the core of our very values!

Comic Code's been dead for almost two years.

It's all about the ratings now.

They must be really old, I remember Heavy Metal from when I young, and was really disappointed to find out all the girls didn't look like Taarna with there clothes off.

My god, sex and violence in MY COMIC BOOKS!!!? For shame I guess I should just make sure my hypothetical kids never get my collection of Marvel and DC books since they will instantly turn into sex raged lunatics. Instead I will make sure they watch Fox approved programming, and video games. There is no sex and violence in them right?

/Does have "adult" comics, but there is parental advisories on them.

Lord help us if the author ever finds out about Tarot: Witch of the Black Rose.

FTFA: "They more or less darkened the characters up. Today, they introduce a lot more reality into it like homosexuality, adultery, all that stuff. It's in the books now," said comic collector Joe Blackwell.

If this guy really was a comic collector, then I'm sure he would've known that all those things have been in comics for decades.

Shut up, I'm watching the b-roll loop of strippers and thong wearing bikini girls on The Factor while Bill O'Reilly complains about the decline of morality in America.

This is a problem because:

- we all know only kids read comic books
- kids are fairly safe from sex and violence outside of comic books

To the Sanctimony-mobile!

How many people with young kids these days grew up with Betty and Veronica? My guess is somewhere around 0.

Dear Old, Stodgy, Fox People,

Welcome to the mind-fark that is marketing and business you have supported so long. Sex and violence sell, especially to men and boys. Embrace the spandex suited she-god you have created.

Used to 'collect' comics (now just golden/silver age), but stopped ~18 years ago. 2 years ago I decided to get my nephew, who was 7-8ish, a couple comic subscriptions for Christmas; Spiderman and Superman. I ordered everything on-line. After he started receiving them i was visiting a picked one up and noticed it had a Mature rating. I was shocked by what I saw on the inside (I liked it but it was completely inappropriate for a 7-8 yr old).

Nice warning DC/Marvel prior to ordering.

Because, we know, that comic books are home intrusive. Meaning much like a standard TV signal, comic books are streamed directly into the house, and you have no choice the matter.

Like checking your kid's pull list at the local shop, or letting the sales person know to be on the look out for things your kid or can't buy, b/c we know that little extra effort of parenting is so exhausting.

Fox is truly funny.
One arm creates the material that the other arm decries as indecent. Both profit...

I bet they'd be cool with it if it was just more violence.

2012-01-19 10:49:30 AM
Apparently they've been living under a rock for over 40 years. So says Ranxerox, Love & Rockets, Baker Street, The Crow, The Realm, Ghost World, Sandman, Deadworld, The Walking Dead, The Killing Joke, Heavy Metal, MAD Magazine (the old one, not the new one), Hellblazer, and pretty much everything put out by EC Comics.

And as many people point out, the stupid Fox "journalist" shows T+ rated comics to young children. If anyone is doing something scandalous, it's the reporter who exposed kids to things outside their rating range.

Bone-headed, alarmist reporter is bone-headed, alarmist.

The promo for this sure was "shocking"! I nearly crapped my pants. Years ago Fox DC did a "special undercover investigation" at raves and they found out people there did drugs!!! The only thing that shocked me about the story was the cops there partying.
Another one they did was about restuarant sanitation and they were swabbing everything. The guy doing the VO on the promo must have said "fecal matter" a few times because the next day every radio station was editing that clip up for fun and games.

Call me crazy, but is the sex and violence really that necessary to sell comics? Shouldn't good story telling and pacing be the sales medium? I mean, I remember reading the Starfire thing before, and it seems to me like they locked her previous (comic) characterization inside a small box, spaced the box, then selected the first bimbo they saw as her replacement.

Yomoxu: but is the sex and violence really that necessary to sell comics?

Is it necessary? No. But so what? Sex and violence is awesome.

FTA:
The female characters are more sexualized. One of the most noticeable transformations is Starfire. The character goes from a kids Cartoon Network superhero in a full-length jumpsuit to a scantily clad, voluptuous version in the comic Red Hood and the Outlaws. This Starfire is shown in a barely there bikini or the equivalent of pasties over her breasts and a thong.

Umm, the Cartoon Network version was the radical change.

BWA-HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAA!!!!

You're a funny, funny man.

Fanboys don't want good storytelling! They want the same old crap with a new coat of paint slapped on it to make it seem hip and edgy and rastafied by 10%. They feel change is bad, and want the same stories about the same characters re-told again and again, with only a costume change or a new #1 on the front of the issue to make it seem like something different, or even worse, sex and violence to make it seem like these old stories and characters created for kids are really for grown-ups.

Good storytelling doesn't even factor into things as far as mainstream DC and Marvel are concerned.

I enjoy comics quite a bit.

I hate DC and Marvel and their fanboys. They're why comics will never be seen as anything other than the kiddie fodder people like the Fox News assholes think comic books are.

I've never met a DC or Marvel "fanboy" in real life. I'm sure they exist, but what are they like? I can't imagine how strange it must be to encounter such a person.

That's because when Fox news idiots were kids, comics were under the CCA and heavily censored. They probably didn't have enough imagination as children to try and find independent comic book stores either.

FinFangFark: or letting the sales person know to be on the look out for things your kid or can't buy

How about not letting your child go shopping unsupervised if you have restrictions on the sort of things they can buy instead of turning the sales person into your own personal babysitter? You are, after all, that child's parent, and the sales person is not.

Oh I agree with that 100%. When I was a kid, my mom would drop me off at the local comic shop (back when kids weren't stolen faster than rims) and I would spend an hour in there. The lesbians that owned and rant he place were really cool, and didn't have a problem with me there.

I wish DC had just decided to blatantly piss on their fanboys with the Watchmen sequels, and gotten Chuck Austen and Rob Liefeld to do the books.
