FTA: And no, this article is not an excuse to make "Hot For Teacher" cracks.

You hear that?! No comments about hot teachers or that time the spanish teacher in high school leaned over your desk giving you a perfect view of her wondrous breasts and you had to carry a book with you for the rest of the day.

Typical union extortion.

As often as the teachers are banging their students nowadays, they may as well make them worth looking at when we read the articles.

2012-01-19 10:39:56 AM
How will they get the students to f*ck them without bigger titays?

Two CSBs: Had an attractive sub say 'made whoopie' in class and I literally had to excuse myself because I could not stop laughing.
First time I saw a thong it was on my psych teacher when she on the desk in front of the class and continued giving the lecture...

In the years that followed, plastic surgery boomed in the United States thanks to non-invasive procedures like Botox and laser-skin treatments.
I thought surgery was inherently invasive?

Make that a firm DD.

To paraphrase: Sensationalize standard healthcare benefits so we can all have none, instead of demanding coverage for everyone. Should please the overlords........ Don't forget to slam unions and their "weekend" demanding ways before wrapping it up. That's some fine journalizzin.

My brother works for a school with a union and got plastic surgery on his face.
He works in the maintenance dept.

The surgery was the result of a pane of glass cutting his face.

I'm sure 99.9% of the plastic surgery they are talking about is reconstructive.

I just want to understand this, JimBob - every time a rug is miscrodermabraded upon in this fair city, I have to spell-check the article?

Just overly sick & tired of "The Atlantic", is all. "OMG, a self-insured rider on their insurance policy was actually used! Teh unions r bad! BAD!"

Never mind that the price tag for that rider was halved this year, compared to the previous year. Never mind that the rider itself was agreed upon by both employee and employer.

What they're really wailing about is that, because of legal protections, the employer can't use the union's benefits as a bargaining chip to extort concessions from the union. And, as we all know, "teh unions r bad! BAD!"

Fark you, "The Atlantic". Seriously, fark you. You're part of the problem.

Two things...

I bet this isn't as rare in school districts as he supposes. It's a field full of women.

Second, I bet he's gonna be yelled at for being sexist for this article. I bet I'd be yelled at for being sexist in my previous point if this wasn't fark.

Well, they gotta keep up with the hot teachers in Orchard Park, Williamsville, and Amherst somehow, as they can't in the classroom. Exercise and clean living can't fix ugly.

Quick question....do you consider the employer in this case to be the people of Buffalo or the elected representative who recieved an endorsement from the union.

I don't have a problem with the people voting for this benefit...I do have a problem with the endorsed representative paying the union back for their endorsement with the peoples money.

When a Republican Gov try's to balance a state budget it's an ASSUALT and right wing excess against unions. But taxpayer $$$ wasted so teachers can look good for students is a cautionary tale for the left.

Why Does Buffalo Pay for Its Teachers to Have Plastic Surgery?

How else are you going to stop truancy? These kids don't want to bang ugly teachers, ya know.

The fact that the union won't negotiate a temporary moratorium on the rider is a black eye for us all.

My union negotiated away a $1200 bonus many of us actually earned, for a year, in order to save a few hundred jobs. Was it worth it? On the whole, yeah. Will this summer suck balls for not having that money? On the whole... yeah.

I'm only 60 miles from Buffalo, and this is going to come down the Thruway to haunt us, I'm sure.

The Triborough Amendment is far more important than just saving some tummy tucks. Without it, unions (who are prevented by law from striking) would have almost no leverage at all. The amendment doesn't just help teachers, but also firefighters, police and other public servants.

The article seems pretty even-handed, but I certainly would like at least some breakdown on the procedures that have been covered. I guarantee some people have abused the system, while others actually needed the services. There's gotta be a way to help burn and cancer victims while limiting the number of botox shots that get covered.

I work for a community college and plastic surgery is covered by our insurance policy, but only to correct birth defects, injuries, or diseases. Burns - covered. Car accident farked up your face - covered. Breast implants after mastectomy - covered. Wrinkles in your forehead from students stressing you out - not covered. Don't like how your fat ass looks - not covered.

AndreMA: .I thought surgery was inherently invasive?

Depends, there are levels of invasive.

Laser treatments: non-invasive. No break in the skin or contact with mucosal layers/body cavities.

Injections: minimally invasive. Skin is broken, but in the smallest way possible.

Breast implants: generally invasive (you're actually cut open and exposed to air).

As a life long Buffalonian I can say that the problem with this really comes down to the fact that the city has a graduation rate below 50%. When your schools are performing that poorly a lot of things come to light and will get blamed.

The union has cried for more money to help with the graduation rates and yet this plastic surgery benefit that would have saved 100 jobs gets saved instead of teachers. That is why this crap is even an issue.

I don't know of any other industry where amidst tons of failure an employee would claim it would have all turned out better if they were getting paid more......well except maybe wall street....

Which brings me to ask the question....why all the love for failed teachers and nothing but hate for wall streeters.

I suspect because just about everyone knows a teacher, and it's harder to dislike someone with whom you have had actual comments.

OK before the trolls get in here crying about excessive government waste.

FTA: "Instead, it was intended to cover serious reconstructive surgery, on burn victims, for instance. In 1996, the rider was nearly cut. But after the daughter of a district employee was hurled through a windshield during a car wreck, requiring surgery to repair scars on her face and body, union officials lobbied to keep the benefit in place. "

Look I"m not defending random elective cosmetic surgery because you want bigger boobs or something, but there is a perfectly valid reason why cosmetic surgery should be covered.

Too bad they aren't smart enough to make that very simple delineation.

Have the schools always been that bad? Or is that a rising trend? I was raised in buffalo, but, don't remember the schools being quite that bad. Though, having gone to the jesuit school might be the reason for that.
