You know, I realize the importance of holding the World Cup in countries around the world, but for f*ck sake, how does a country like Brazil not have their construction schedule on track and how did FIFA not know that Brazil had a f*cking booze ban on since
2003
?!?!
Russia is set to host in 2018 and is apparently going to have to shell out $6 billion to get properly equipped. And then in 2022 we have the complete clusterf*ck that is Qatar.
I can only assume that World Cup 2026 will be in Afghanistan, because it has become abundantly clear that the World Cup should never, ever be hosted in a country that is, you know, prepared for it.

Brazil doesn't require the customer to get a permit to buy alcohol in the first place. Alcohol consumption in Brazil is normal and socially acceptable. It is not in Qatar, even with the small dispensations they make for foreigners. Won't matter though. WC is never going to happen in Qatar in 2022 anyway

The US is a logical back up for any future World Cup. It's probably the only country around that has the stadiums and infrastructure ready to go at a moment's notice.

There's no real dominant beer company in Germany. It's a highly variable market that's dominated by regional beers. No one had the cash to compete with Anheuser Busch, and it's all a money game to FIFA.

I've never been to Brazil, but I've done alot of traveling in Latin America. I find it shocking that beer is banned in stadiums. How could Brazilians allow this to happen?
The good news is if it's anything like the other countries I've been too, there's already a small black market to get around booze laws and the authorities don't give a fark anyway. When I lived south of the boarder I'm pretty sure it was a no-no to drink in the streets, but my amigos and I used to buy liters of beer and get bombed in the streets until the wee hours of the morning.

Very true. Carlsberg (above average) and Heiniken (meh) have a large presence in the UEFA sanctioned events and would have been better choices over A-B Budweiser.

Eh I've never liked Heineken at all. I'd put it on the same level as Budweiser. I'll drink it because it has alcohol in it. Carlsberg would have been a good choice. When I was in Dublin, I was pretty surprised to see a ton of Budweisers signs in stores and bars. It was kind of weird.

Wasn't there a story back when it looked like South Africa was going to fail that England had basically told Fifa to give them a month to be ready and they'd host. US is big and could always handle it, but I have to imagine that England would stab someone to do it. Mind you US/England are still screwed for pointing out the corruption in the last vote so no chance getting it any time soon.

I'm sure England would love to do it, but 2018 will have been Russia, which counts as a European host, so I would think that they would look to North America or Asia for a backup.

Not to poop on the parade route, but FIFA's "official" policy is to look to the previous World Cup as the backup in cases of emergency. I would assume that only applies if it's last minute though. If they have a few years warning they can and have had a new vote and selected a new host. So with any luck we stop using oil and the Middle East converts back into the medieval society they're barely concealing and we can stop pretending to respect them.

Public transport (or lack of) between cities is certainly working against the US. Only 12 stadiums were used in Germany 2006 and 10 in S. Africa - no one without a car wants to figure out how to get from Kansas City to Nashville (I bet that's an interesting Greyhound ride). If it came to the US on short notice, you can bet it would stay in the NE Corridor, California and maybe FL.

I understand that. But without a car, how are you supposed to move thousands of fans on that route?
It's not the issue of having the stadiums (there are probably 4 or 5 European countries who meet the stadium requirements), it's having the infrastructure to move people. So quite a few of the 32 NFL stadiums will not work on short notice

Probably want to avoid the Metro- and Super-domes. Does Indy's roof open? I think Atlanta is still being punished for their Olympic showing... St. Louis has a dome, too... Do Soldier and Heinz fields have okay turf in July?
Still, there's probably 24 suitable venues, and how awesome would it be to have it in, say, Green Bay? World Cup matches in Lambeau? Leap into the crowd after scoring a go-ahead goal in the 94'?
Imagine the awesomeness of a championship match in Cowboys stadium. Sure, some folks might think it a bit gaudy, but it'd be cool to see. How high do goalkicks go, anyway? Higher than punts?

we've got these big shiny tubes that fly through the sky. that's how you get from kansas city to nashville. because that's like traveling from london to berlin. the reason you fly over fly-over country is that there's a lot of it, and a lot of it is empty.
