Awesome.

2012-01-19 10:24:34 AM
Aww, no pics. :(

2012-01-19 10:24:57 AM
Someone should spray paint him pinkish red.

2012-01-19 10:25:40 AM
Poor guy.

2012-01-19 10:26:24 AM
Another file showed a cow that had been spray-painted with "Merry Christmas".

O-k...

I feel bad for laughing.

Someone make a photo with a hawk huffing pink paint. I can't get to imageshack from work. :(

2012-01-19 10:26:58 AM
I did that with a woodpecker in Arkansas. Created quite a stir.

Wow...

That's some serious trolling on the birders.

2012-01-19 10:27:09 AM
I sincerely doubt any birdwatcher would think they're viewing a new species. Strangely-colored birds are always assumed to be melanistic, leucistic, or to have had some sort of environmental influence.

2012-01-19 10:28:27 AM
So are these the famous Trollhawks I keep reading about in the football threads?

"In a judge's decision released this week, Grant Michael Teahan was found guilty of two charges of ill-treating an animal after he defended the charges in the Dannevirke District Court in November, the Manawatu Standard reports....

Computers seized at Teahan's Dannevirke property had files, photographs and films relating to red hawks deleted."

farking seriously?

2012-01-19 10:29:24 AM
I think I've seen where some hawks had that color on their tails. Must have been his devilish work.

/red-tailed hawks? ain't no such animal.

I read a book called "The Painted Bird" and it scarred me for life. Well, no, actually it gave me several boners. Sick-ass Polacks!

2012-01-19 10:33:23 AM
I LOL"d but geeez...leave the birds alone!!!!! One day they will get their revenge!

2012-01-19 10:34:00 AM
How was this cruel again? Were the birds mercilessly teased by their fashionista classmates or something?

2012-01-19 10:34:24 AM
At first I snerked, but then I realized that this guy probably doomed the hawks to near-certain death because they would be easily spotted by prey. So - yeah. Maybe not so funny.

Did they think the pink woodpecker was gay?

2012-01-19 10:38:27 AM
Really? He painted some birds and thought that was great comedy because there was an off chance that 1) Bird watchers would be around, 2) Would see the bird at all and 3) Think that they had found a new species of pink hawk? How stupid does he think people are?

Reads the article

Yikes. Apparently he knows his audience.

I don't.

Does painting them actually hurt the hawks? If not, I'm going to laugh. If so, Boo this man.

Although my source of information isn't all that authoritative, that is my understanding. If you paint a bird then other birds will not recognize it as being a member of the same species. If the painted bird tries to join the flock, it will be attacked by the flock.

Yeah, me too.

I remember one of these from a neighborhood pigeon fancier (Vermont, at the time).

But he did a whole red and black dye job on some big white "squab" type pigeons and turned them into passenger pigeons.

Got some birdwatchers hilariously excited.

Well, you see, spray paint is full of things like toluene, xylene, acetone, and things of that nature. Can't do the poor birds any real good, now, can it?

Maybe he used organic bird-friendly spray paint from Dupont. You don't know, man. You DON'T KNOW!

/should have styled their feathers, too. maybe a "flock of seagulls" hairdo or something.

Hawks do the preying. Don't think they are preyed on.

When I was but a wee lad, I had a friend whose house was infested with squirrels chewing through the siding and getting into the attic. His Dad trapped them and sprayed them with blue hair dye, then released them miles away, only to have them come back weeks later.

I always chuckled when I'd go over to his house and see a shiatload of blue squirrels running around being merry.

2012-01-19 11:04:40 AM
If he was actually spray-painting the birds, then he deserves what he gets. But if he was just dyeing them, harmlessly, then it's actually pretty funny.

2012-01-19 11:07:22 AM
So the real answer is to use a dye next time instead of paint. We test our cosmetics on animals anyways so the birds should be fine with some Nice & Easy or the like.

Thus the "spotted by prey" and not "spotted by predators".

:)

FTFA: Teahan, who will be sentenced on January 30, is considering appealing his conviction.

On what grounds, exactly? He admitted to spraying the hawks, as well as other animals. Evidence pretty conclusively confirms that admittance. Is there a hawk-painting technicality of which we are unaware?

Man up, take your lumps, and stop being an idiot.
