I sincerely doubt any birdwatcher would think they're viewing a new species. Strangely-colored birds are always assumed to be melanistic, leucistic, or to have had some sort of environmental influence.

Computers seized at Teahan's Dannevirke property had files, photographs and films relating to red hawks deleted."

At first I snerked, but then I realized that this guy probably doomed the hawks to near-certain death because they would be easily spotted by prey. So - yeah. Maybe not so funny.

Really? He painted some birds and thought that was great comedy because there was an off chance that 1) Bird watchers would be around, 2) Would see the bird at all and 3) Think that they had found a new species of pink hawk? How stupid does he think people are?

Although my source of information isn't all that authoritative, that is my understanding. If you paint a bird then other birds will not recognize it as being a member of the same species. If the painted bird tries to join the flock, it will be attacked by the flock.

I remember one of these from a neighborhood pigeon fancier (Vermont, at the time).
But he did a whole red and black dye job on some big white "squab" type pigeons and turned them into passenger pigeons.
Got some birdwatchers hilariously excited.

Well, you see, spray paint is full of things like toluene, xylene, acetone, and things of that nature. Can't do the poor birds any real good, now, can it?

Maybe he used organic bird-friendly spray paint from Dupont. You don't know, man. You DON'T KNOW!

When I was but a wee lad, I had a friend whose house was infested with squirrels chewing through the siding and getting into the attic. His Dad trapped them and sprayed them with blue hair dye, then released them miles away, only to have them come back weeks later.
I always chuckled when I'd go over to his house and see a shiatload of blue squirrels running around being merry.

If he was actually spray-painting the birds, then he deserves what he gets. But if he was just dyeing them, harmlessly, then it's actually pretty funny.
Russ1642
2012-01-19 11:07:22 AM
So the real answer is to use a dye next time instead of paint. We test our cosmetics on animals anyways so the birds should be fine with some Nice & Easy or the like.

Thus the "spotted by prey" and not "spotted by predators".
