It would appear that, in theory at least, there's a mathematical explanation for anything that happens anywhere at anytime ignoring the possibility of the random nature of subatomic bric-a-brac substantially altering the results.

We're just not quite smart enough to solve some of the formulas... yet.

Ok cool

But,

can this ''''''''''mathematical distribution'''''''''''''' prevent the spawning of future serial killers?

James Fallon, a neuroscientist at UC Irvine who studies the brains of psychopaths, said the new findings are well-aligned with prior observations about serial killers, many of whom seem to behave similarly to drug addicts. In both cases, Fallon said, withdrawal from their addiction "builds and builds and then hits a threshold trigger point, after which they go on a spree to release that 'longing.'"

Are we really going to trust Jimmy Fallon on this?

/was told there would be no math

Yeah, that's a description, not an explanation. A predictive description isn't bad, but . . . I hate to say it, this isn't a new idea by any stretch. Variations of this model have been used before, although this may very well be a superior model.

Saying that a human being does something because of natural impulses is not an explanation.

So, serial killers still need to be put down. But now we know that we cannot be justified in feeling that they deserve it and relish in ending them. It is not their fault, but knowing this does not change the solution.

So what? We incarcerate people that the formulas tell us will be serial killers? Minority Report much?

bootman: So, serial killers still need to be put down. But now we know that we cannot be justified in feeling that they deserve it and relish in ending them. It is not their fault, but knowing this does not change the solution.

So hopefully we'll eventually be able to predict who will be a serial killer based on brain chemistry, and just abort them and avoid the whole mess entirely. I don't see anything problematic about that.

FraggleStickCar: Dostoyevsky is spinning in his grave.

In the Tikhvin Cemetary at Aleksander Nevsky Monastery in St. Petersburg, Russia.

"To visit Dostoevsky's gravesite at the Aleksander Nevsky Lavra from Sennaya Ploschad Sadovaya / Spassky Metro station, take the Metro three stops to Aleksander Nevskovo Ploschad Metro station. Cross the square and the cemetary is in front of the monastery. There is a small charge to the cemetary park. Many famous writers, musicians and other notable figures are buried there. The monuments are works of art and it is fascinating to wander the grounds and discover many famous names."

Take that wikipedia.

withdrawal from their addiction "builds and builds and then hits a threshold trigger point, after which they go on a spree to release that 'longing.'"

Isn't this in every crime show there is? At some point while pursuing the serial killer, the detectives always say something like, "The interval between the killings is getting shorter! He's due to strike again--TONIGHT!" or "The perp will now go to ground for a short time, as the murder showed no signs of disorganization or loss of self-control. We have a few days."

I May Be Crazy But...: There's math that'll give you a pretty good idea what the subatomic bric-a-crac will do, too.

Only when averaged over many events. In other words, there's math to describe what fair die rolls will do to. Doesn't mean any given die roll is not random within a describable set of parameters. There is fundamental quantum randomness in the bric-a-brac.

You'd have to be an IDIOT to be an old-fashioned serial killer in the USA nowadays. Forensics is too good and there are cameras farking everywhere. Surely we'll never see another Bundy or Gacy?

This guy had the right idea, but as soon as he stopped moving around and set up shop in the USA he was caught:

If being a serial killer is based on brain chemistry than so could other things. Being a petty thief, a welfare recipient, a Nickelback fan. I live in a world where I am completely justified in hating Nickelback fans knowing that there cannot be any mitigating factors. I do not want this to change.

I May Be Crazy But...: There's math that'll give you a pretty good idea what the subatomic bric-a-crac will do, too.

But it's not entirely sound math and it only gives a range of possibilities with a certain confidence interval. Not that I'm suggesting it's not useful, but my point is that traditional math may only provide absolute answers to high level questions. Kind of like how you can launch a satellite with Newton's laws just fine, but if you need to miss something in the atmosphere by a few inches then you need better formulas than what Apple-Boy provided.

I can't wait until we get the first "that's not me in the surveillance footage I've been framed I can tell by the pixels" defence in a big trial. Also, people will start wearing chin putty to beat face recognition software you KNOW this.

I gave my boy tools for xmas, his mother and I having just divorced. I spent all of last weekend unfixing the shiat around her house he "fixed" with his tools. All the inlaws going off on him and all I could point out is how long he had to spend attempting to be a man, which is already far longer than any of those pantywaists.
