In olden days a glimpse of stocking
Was looked on as something shocking,
But now, God knows,
Anything Goes.

Good authors too who once knew better words,
Now only use four letter words
Writing prose, Anything Goes.

The world has gone mad today
And good's bad today,
And black's white today,
And day's night today,
When most guys today
That women prize today
Are just silly gigolos
And though I'm not a great romancer
I know that I'm bound to answer
When you propose,
Anything goes

i think a good point to make would be that SOPA/PIPA would allow game companies to file a claim against any game reporting website that used pictures or video footage of their games... which could lead to some fun if said game reporting website gave a game a bad review

2012-01-18 10:03:23 PM
Well, one thing would be sure. Games developers and publishers would no longer pay off or bribe reviewers to, or even just not send them review copies and cut them out of the media loop altogether if they don't, talk nothing but rainbows and kittens and baby smiles from heaven. They'd just straight-up SOPAnate the site..

Would they still give every game a 99% rating, no matter how hard it sucked?

Only if it was the latest Zelda.

1) I've heard that the burden of proof rests with the alleged infringer under the new statute. One would have to prove they didnt break the law

2) Bloggers aren't journalists(to some)

There's no such thing as good games journalism.

Any website that gets enough clicks starts getting free games and swag from publishers to boost review scores, even though any actual gamer could tell you that it's puffed-up crap 90% of the time.

I'd be willing to make an exception for sites like Penny Arcade, that don't actually review games.

Ultimately, the result is a bunch of sites competing with IGN to be the most EXTREEME in competing for the coveted Call of Duty (read: teenagers with no taste or parental oversight) demographic. They all pretend to be legit, but it's all a game to get more money and swag while pretending to have dignity or pride.

/the sad thing is I'm guilty of helping because I have nothing else to read that interests me on the internet
//well, besides Fark

And both of those would get sorted out in court. I'd imagine both would get ruled on in the way that you think they should.

The fact that the courts tend to rein in bullshiat legislation is not an acceptable excuse for allowing it to be passed in the first place. Remember, the cartels only have to get lucky once.

Thats true.

But these bills would give the media companies the power to go to an ISP and simply say "site x is infringing on our content" and the isp would have to shut down site x until things get sorted out in the courts, although now that site x is offline they have no ad revenue and cant afford the court battle...

The problems with the bills are that theres no burden of proof and no due process.

"Moooooom, he hit me!"
"Billy, youre grounded for hitting your sister."
"But i didnt."
"Well, she says you did, youre still grounded until you prove you didnt."

JerseyTim: So nothing of value would be lost?

Pretty much THIS!

So the video game related media, an industry already well known for writing about a three week old stinking turd in a box as though it were the second coming of raptor jesus because there was, metaphorically, another box stuffed full of $100 bills (or £50 notes seeing as it was a brit in the article) has now decided to whine about SOPA and PIPA.

Perhaps, just perhaps, if you hadn't of willingly guided the game publishers dong deep inside of you whilst gobbling on a second waved in your face whilst telling me that shiat like Halo (try the PC port, it's abysmal yet original xbox was an x86 processor and GeForce 3 card), Neverwinter Nights 2, Test Drive Unlimited and a string of other titles was actually the second coming I'd be inclined to listen to a word you had to say.

But you did, you still are and I know deep within my heart that the second you finished saying those words you went right back to gobbling industry cock. You have cost me money and I will not listen to a word you have to say about anything until you a) get rid of the cocks and b) apologize for previous behaviour. Until you do that DIAF.

There hasn't been a good game since Halo 2.

The only reason I'm half-heartedly sticking with WoW is so I can dance in fountains of Raider tears after the next content nerf.

I don't think Americans realize how this affects the rest of the world.Conversationally in this discussion, you're on the edge of an all out cyber war. All kidding aside, I've seen more than a few sites suggesting that this bill is a declaration of war and will be treated as such. And I can see the fall out as countries world wide will no longer recognize ICANN or ARPA and block entire IP originating from the United States. Plus your country will come under relentless attacks on all of your most important infrastructures, banking, electric, utilities, nuclear facilities, military. The list is endless. All because some stupid old asshole wants to keep status quo (looking at your R. Tex sponsor of the bill). I'm not threatening. I'm just repeating what I've been seeing. Not a good time to be an American I'd say.

Strolpol: There's no such thing as good games journalism.

Nope, it's hobbiest media. For some reason gaming is one of the few hobbies with a small vocal group that expects coverage of it to be like CNN. My wife does a lot of craft stuff, and there are extensive websites, magazines, podcasts, etc for that and yet there's no 'This is shiatty journalism' outcry.

There's no serious games journalism because it doesn't need it, and if someone wrote about how Space Invaders is a sign of Xenophobia within our society, no one would read it anyways.

Any website that gets enough clicks starts getting free games and swag from publishers to boost review scores, even though any actual gamer could tell you that it's puffed-up crap 90% of the time.

Not true, I've written for games websites and the games we got for free did not come with a condition to boost review scores. The PR folks are the ones who distribute review copies of games, but they're also the same people distributing 99% of any new information about upcoming games. If the PR folks see that you are giving their games bad review scores, it is not in there better interests to keep giving review copies to the game website. They are in the business of controlling public perception of a game. Websites with higher traffic will usually get a game regardless of score because it stil acts as an advertisment for a game.

I once received Hail To The Chimp for free with some swag. It was made by the developers of a game I loved and the PR person was someone who was friendly with the site. None of that matters when you spend hours playing a mediocre product. No one, not even video game bloggers, want to spend a chunk of their life playing shiatty shovelware games.

If it's puffed up crap it's partially because the audience freaks out over negative comments about whatever game they've decided to champion.

Lumbar Puncture: There's no serious games journalism because it doesn't need it, and if someone wrote about how Space Invaders is a sign of Xenophobia within our society, no one would read it anyways.

That's because game journalism needs to be game criticism and stop wasting its time on worthless matters like Top X game lists and nonsense articles that are premised like they came out of a Composition I writing class. What people should be writing are two-fold: Long-form writing discussing the good and the bad of the business of making games and long-form writing giving good criticism about the design of the games. Unfortunately, there's very few sites I know about that do it well. Insomnia does it well, Recap's Postback does it well (although the site is in Spanish), I know people like to point to ActionButton as such a site. There needs to be more of that and less IGN. Unfortunately, that form of criticism doesn't keep people coming back to the site all day to check for updates and drive up traffic in the process. It's not profitable, and if you want to do it, you basically expect that you're doing it for free and that you're doing it because you love doing it.
