You know, they should flavor this alien world with Australians, Brits, and the odd South African, along with the usual mix of US and Canadian actors, just so we get a more alien feel out of the whole thing.

This whole show will fly shiatsburgh on the first inter-spatial rocket horse, but if it lasts long enough mebbe the Jim Henson Co will finally get enough funding for The Dark Crystal 2.

Because Syfy, the people who brought you 12 hours a day of guys running around chasing noises, and another 12 hours a day of greased up guys wearing thongs pinning each other down, is going to know fark-all to do with an actual science fiction show. They can't even present those two shows properly, nevermind the fact that they sound like they want to tackle a videogame tie-in.

So damn glad I cancelled cable about a year ago.

To be fair, I'd settle for Morena Baccarin nude scenes...

I thought that the crew with Henson did a decent job. Brian Henson sort of killed a few projects early, but with Farscape, they managed to come up with a show that had a quirky feel, and that didn't take itself too seriously, and still delivered some great moments. It wasn't high space opera, and it wasn't silly comedy sci-fi. It was a balance that was fun. To be fair, that was why I liked Firefly: it was a fun ride. Too many series delve immediately into dark and dreary and conspiracies upon conspiracies and villains muttering into their coffee as it grows cold and black like their hearts.

Mayhem of the Black Underclass: You know, they should flavor this alien world with Australians, Brits, and the odd South African, along with the usual mix of US and Canadian actors, just so we get a more alien feel out of the whole thing.

To be fair, Farscape was originally supposed to be produced for Australia's Nine Network, which is in Australia. Hence the Aussie cast, crew, and production...

F.U. SyFy, F.U.

It has taken me years to get over the Farscape cancellation. Years.

And what happened to Firefly was unspeakable, although not, strictly speaking, SyFy's fault.

And lets not forget that Eureka is also canceled after the next season shows.

Not one more damn dime to Bonnie Hammer. I won't do a damn thing that benefits SyFy, not while they treat that station as a catch-all for NBCUniversal's less desirable programming. Not while SyFy thinks it's competing with Spike. Not while the only thing deciding whether programming is appropriate for the channel is the profit margin.

Not while that moron's running the show.

So....

It will be monster of the week.

It will have no overarching plot to speak of.

It will have second-rate special effects.

It will be off air for three week runs to make space for Ghost Hunters/wrestling.

It will have incredibly awful acting that defies measures of the worst acting ever seen on television.

Oh, yes, and it will run for three seasons longer than it should.

You know, I like westerns, man-with-no-name archetypes, muppets, aliens, and post-apocalyptic science fiction. I liked X Files, Farscape, and Firefly. I also like sauerkraut, chocolate milk, and tabasco sauce. I'm not about to put those things in a blender, make a smoothie, and drink it.

But since this is Syfy, it'll be utter, pandering, lowest-common denominator unwatchable crap that no science fiction fan in his or her right mind would even admit to wanting to watch. And it'll run for ten seasons, no problem.

Or it'll be decent, spend the first season slowly building up, then cancel once it finds its feet.

Also, I'll bite; how in the fark is a TV series going to be linked and influenced by an MMO? Or am I misremembering things and the MMO and the TV series will be only loosely or not at all influencing each other?

Leishu: Did I forget anything?

Yeah, once the show starts showing signs of improving and catching on, it's weekly time slot will be determined by rolling a d6 to determine the day it shows on (the missing night being Friday), a d12 to determine on what hour it shows, and flipping a coin to determine AM or PM. This result will be rerolled the first of every month and used for the remainder of that month.

Don't forget the d20 rolled each week:

1-5: Ghost Hunters special
6-15: Air as normal
16-19: Air an episode out of planned order
20: If within 5 episodes of the season finale, announce you're not renewing for next season. Otherwise reroll as a d20-1.

2012-01-19 02:19:24 AM
Oh, and it won't have a web distribution. The only internet tie-ins will be a "what X are you?" Facebook quiz, Flash mini-game that reveals trivial details about third-string characters, and a tie-in web series about second-string characters nestled snugly behind a 0/6 Wall of Ad Revenue that has no relevance to the series' main story arcs whatsoever, but shows some decent T&A in the first couple web episodes to get viewers watching it.

I've really enjoyed the BOOM! Studios Farscape graphic novels (written by O'Bannon).

They're like the missing fifth season and a hell of a lot more original than Defiance, based on this article.

Kant Lavar: If within 5 episodes of the season finale, announce you're not renewing for next season.

...and the subsequent d% check:

1-10: It's not actually canceled, that's just a rumor coming out of a staff meeting.
11-25: It's actually being canceled, and we're announcing it now to cockblock wrapping up the series.
26-50: Announce SyFy original or straight-to-DVD movie to wrap up series. Leave it in development hell for a decade, then quietly announce you're not financing it.
51-60: WOOO WRASSLIN YA BABY WHO LOVES YA
61-75: Announce a god-awful spin-off series born straight out of the ass of a producer who...to put it mildly, "failed upwards"...and leave the entire franchise in his hands.
76-80: Ghost Hunters tie-in!
81-99: Battlestar Galactica spin-off that reboot the prequels. Specifically, it's a buddy-cop story about a down-on-his luck private detective, played by Jesse Ventura, and his partner, a mildly defective Cylon with a sassy yet sarcastic attitude voiced by David Hewlett. They'll try to get Kristen Bell to be the lead female/love interest, a sexy Gemenese librarian "onto" the Cylon plan but disregarded by all as a paranoid conspiracy theorist, but end up hiring either Olivia Munn or Adrianne Curry instead.
100: Bonnie Hammer sacrifices lead actor to Cthulhu. IA IA FHTAGN!

Well, there was a time when MMO content used to be updated weekly (asherons call used to do this I believe) with a progressing plot and story.

If its done like that it could be pretty damn good, or at least different from wow clones (adding a new dungeon once every 3 months is NOT a significant story arch).

2012-01-19 06:02:28 AM
Bonnie Hammer made SyFy 500 million past year by getting them to produce shows that people will watch when broadcast. They also made it by cancelling stuff that people preferred to download rather than watch when broadcast or buy on DVD.

The chances of this show meeting its production costs aren't great unless the MMO does some serious business.
