Before anybody says "Family Guy", Chris Elliot parodied this on Letterman in 1992 (new window), when there was no YouTube encyclopedia of pop culture kitsch. You either remembered watching Shatner do it in 1978 or you didn't.

Too many hours have I spent wondering which one I'd be...the lonely, self-doubting Shatner Rocket Man, the stalwart, pragmatic Shatner Rocket Man, or the I-don't-give-a-fark, partying Shatner "Rock-it" man.
