The LDS Church has again joined with dozens of other faiths in its defense of marriage as exclusively between a man and a woman, arguing that the move to legalize gay marriage may infringe on religious rights.

Ironic that the church that started polygamy in the US and was persecuted for it, is now all for traditional marriage exclusively between one man and one woman and wants to persecute those who disagree. If you can't beat off, join 'em.

The actual letter (original here) is the whiniest argument against gay marriage I've seen yet: "If gay marriage is legalized, then the government will discriminate against us by not giving us free money." Which, apparently, is a punishment reserved only for racists.

The funny thing is that it took the prospect of equality for gays for them to get all scruffy towards racism. It's reverse psychology for chemically imbalanced chimps.

I'm not sure how keeping the gays from marrying would change that perception.

Its their attempt to go mainstream and appear as legit.

There's an old saw that goes something like this:

If one person tells you that you're a horse's ass, then you brush it off. But if five people tell you that you're a horse's ass, then go get fitted for a saddle.

Much too much of a fuss about nothing. Marriage really boils down to a contract between two people that is recognized by the state - that grants certain rights and privileges between those two parties - that are not granted in any other type of contract. And this contract is so unique - that it has to be dissolved between the two parties in a court of law, before either of the parties can enter the exact same contract with another person.

People don't need to go anywhere near a religious service, to be granted those rights and privileges in this particular contract. Now ... if the Church, Synagogue, Mosque ... etc doesn't want to recognize these legal contracts ... so what? Who cares? These organizations shouldn't have any control over the rights and privileges that are granted by the state to those people who enter into this legal contract.

Follow this logic:


Person A, murders person B and Person C in no way has anything to gain/lose nor is impacted by the murder of person B. Person C is a Christian and follows the 10 commandments. Person C has no knowledge of person A or B and (excluding chaos theory) Person C continues to live their life unimpacted by the murder of person B.

Does Person A murdering person B victimize person C because Person A broke the rules Person C lives by?

Now replace the word "murder' with "married."

Does replacing "murder" with "marries" make Person C more, less, the same as, or not at all a victim?
