subby must have missed the part where that 25.1% and 44.5% were shares of sales in the last quarter, not market share as a whole.

Really? They explained it pretty plainly. To get actual 3g from t-mobile (hacked iphones can only run Edge except in a couple very select markets) the phone has to be redesigned with a new antenna due to the frequencies T-Mobile uses for their data.

That's not what the article is saying.

I'm pretty sure Android still has a substantial lead in overall market share.

Whatever.

I like the hell out of my $129 hacked Optimus V on the $25 unlimited data plan on Virgin Mobile. It does everything I want it to do and more. And since I drink my coffee at home nobody cares what phone I have.

These.

If I can speak to those who run Fark.com: why do you care about SOPA in the least? You allow misleading bullshiat headlines through just to generate posts to sell more advertising. You're as sneaky and underhanded as the idiot politicans. And it's getting old.

FlashHarry: a fairly telling graphic.

I don't think it was news to anyone that a shiat load of people purchased the iPhone 4S. The surprising thing was the percentage of iOS purchases that were older devices. It isn't just people purchasing the latest and greatest. But, again, that's just Q4 and it was driven by a recent purchase.

I would assume Q1 and Q2 will see a plateau of that rise (or even a resurgence of Android as new phones are released). Then, the 2012 Q3 graph will have a huge iPhone 5 bump for iOS.

Unfortunately, this.

I'm an Android guy, but I'm getting sick and tired of doing tech support and jailbreaking of my wife's iPhone (on T-Mobile). I would buy an unlocked phone direct from Apple if it didn't feel like a HUGE FARKING WASTE OF MONEY since it'd have to be an iP4 or 4S and it STILL would only get Edge.

It could be parents that own the newer expensive phones buying the cheap older ones for their kids. Wasn't at&t basically giving the older ones away?

Yes, I believe there was a big price drop when the 4S was released. Everyone that figured they were way too expensive before got a chance to get an iPhone even if it wasn't the new one.

Actually, it will drop a lot in 1Q, and way down in 2Q. Apple sales spike on an annual basis for the device launch. There are several new Android device launches every MONTH. That is why Android sales remain strong year round and Apple is only competitive for one quarter out of the year. The article should have put 3Q2011 numbers on there to show the huge sales slump before launch.

madgonad: There are several new Android device launches every MONTH. That is why Android sales remain strong year round and Apple is only competitive for one quarter out of the year

Well, yes...that's what I was getting at.

That's kinda what happens when there are half a dozen companies vs one.

Actually, like most Apple/Android involved threads, we're going to be dealing with a big drop in IQ. I find it fascinating that anyone would give a flying f*ck about sales figures on anything... doubly so for those who do not own stocks in any company involved.

Oddly enough, T-Mobile has started deploying towers broadcasting at the AT&T frequencies in select markets. I have no idea what their long term plans are, but I guess at least some cities will see 3g speeds on their unlocked AT&T phones on T-Mobile

The article seems to be trying to conflate quarterly sales with marketshare, I don't think it's subby's fault.

I'm ok with them having a big market share, but I wish that more of them would buy my game for their phones, but right now it seems like you need a lot more advertising than I've got to be able to get a critical mass of users.

Apple is doing fine, whatever their market share is.
They don't have the majority in PC's or phones, yet they are making the mst money.
Good job Apple.

Not hacked, but I know where you're coming from. What sold it was the whole no contract thing, and the monthly cost was ridiculously low in comparison. Even better, I got it at Target on sale for $50.

CSB: I had to explain to a shill at Radio Shack that paying $75 upfront for a phone and $25 a month would cost me less than a 2 year plan set at $70 a month before other fees...

Use Addons Detector. It shows all Addons used by apps. If you see AirPush, you'll know the offending app to remove

Yes and no. It says "Smartphone Operating System" and then simply lists 'Android' and 'iOS'. I'm ignoring RIM as their death has been on the cards for a while, but those other two feature on tablets and we 'know' from a Gartner report that there are around 11m Android tablets and 50m iOS ones.

If they're thrown in to those numbers because they run a "Smartphone Operating System" it will most certainly screw the figures up.

So, yes, you have an Apple fan (kit if not business practices) disputing a graph that shows Apple in the lead.

Way to spin an article for hyping a company (Apple) who is currently in 2nd place.
