And if anyone knows about abuse of power, it's the MPAA.

The RIAA and MPAA thinks that any opinion that they disagree with is promoting piracy, hurting jobs, abuse of power, ect.
Ironic tag well deserved. These are the same tools who try to claim that there is no public debate on this issue. . .while stacking the deck at the congressional hearings so it's full of content providers and has almost no tech companies present.

These blackouts are good for raising awareness about SOPA, but better yet, hit the MPAA where it hurts, their wallets. Boycott movies and album sales. As in don't go to the movies, don't buy any albums.

In a Tuesday statement, Chris Dodd, chairman and CEO of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA)-and a former Connecticut senator-said Web sites participating in the blackout are "resorting to stunts that punish their users or turn them into their corporate pawns, rather than coming to the table to find solutions to a problem that all now seem to agree is very real and damaging."
first off - no, we do NOT all agree.
secondly - it's called 'free speech' and you should know better.
and lastly - STFU. you serve a corporate power that wants the ability to censor whatever it can't compete with or buy out. shame on you sir, for lying in service to corporate greed over the rights of individuals to speak without fear of the government censor.

The only problem is that people have been boycotting the RIAA for years. Even if they have an impact, the RIAA and the media ignore the impact and report that falling sales are exclusively the fault of piracy.

I think that's the problem, they know that's true.
They want to use SOPA to essentially kill independent content creators on the Internet, to ensure that the RIAA & MPAA have a stranglehold on content generation.
They know that the internet has made their business model essentially obsolete. They could either completely re-tool their business (if possible), or they could maim the internet until it's no threat to them.
They chose the latter. They figured they could just buy some legislation to make it work. Now they are seeing a backlash and trying to deal with it.

Yes. Ad-free non-profit Wikipedia is completely beholden to corporate interests and are committing the unspeakable crime of offering information which could potentially sway political support away from quaint Mom-and-Pop general stores like the MPAA and RIAA.
"It is also an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today."
And that doesn't sound at all threatening and as though Chris Dodd thinks that the internet should be thanking its lucky stars that it's still allowed to exist.

FTFA:
"Wikipedia has never blacked itself out before on any other political issue, nor have websites like Mozilla or the social news aggregator Reddit," the Journal wrote. "How's that for irony: Companies supposedly devoted to the free flow of information are gagging themselves, and the only practical effect will be to enable fraudsters. They've taken no comparable action against, say, Chinese repression."
The stupid in this sentence burns with the force of a thousand suns.

Dodd totally missed the point of the protest. The black out is less a retaliation act than an awareness campaign to educate the public on this bill.
Of course, it doesn't surprise me the MPAA to try and twist things around.

Lamar Smith, who claims to represent the Austin high tech crowd really doesn't have a clue.
His district gerry manders two or three hundred miles through two cities with populations larger than Alaska.
I'm surprised I never bumped into this genius at science fairs, math contests, National Science Foundation meetings in high school. Of course his school was only four blocks away.

yeah, but the corporate news channels have had a virtual blackout on the details of SOPA/PIPA and it's negative consequences. now people who otherwise weren't paying attention just had their awareness bootstrapped into reality mode.

So individuals, groups and corporations expressing their opinions is an abuse of power (depends on the corporation, of course).
The appropriate means for expressing opinions is through campaign contributions to members of the United States Congress. I predict that the Motion Picture Association of America will now lobby for legislation prohibiting acts of protest against proposed legislative acts. They may also lobby to enable copyright claims upon authored and pending legislation, to prevent meaningful discussion of legislative proposals.

I don't agree at all. You have yet to show any evidence that this is a particularly egregious problem for you and every time you start using numbers to try and peg your damages they're blatantly absurd and obviously fished fresh from your ass.
And this is why, despite the fact that every excuse except "I literally cannot obtain this obscure item any other way" is complete bullshiat that actually means "I'm a cheap, lazy bastard of low moral character" I would never turn someone in. Even if you offered rewards I wouldn't. Because there is
nobody
in this fight of a lower moral character than the **AA's and their bought-off politicians.
So shove your stupid press release in your piehole, Dodd. Even the people who already disagree with the pirates still hate you more.

No he didn't. He's earning his keep by publicly defending the indefensible and reminding his former colleagues who their masters are.
