No, that would be the Scientologists. In Hollywood anyway. Nah, they can't compete with the Jews there.

If Mitt is going to push the Mormon thing, Obama should just ask, "You guys believed people like me were sub-human and cursed until about 1960. What up with that?".

Mormons don't control the world economy, Hollywood, and nearly 1/82d of the Middle East land. They aren't nearly the threat that Jon Stewart is.

Tithing is super important in the Mormon church. Although between that and the huge families, I don't know how you can afford groceries.

Not my problem.

In the political world? Yeah it's a big deal.

It's nice to see he puts his money where his mouth is. However he is still my second favorite

In the land of FARK there's actually a discussion about one man's religion being weirder than another's? Like Mormonism is any goofier than Islam or the rest.

2012-01-18 05:38:14 PM
That's not surprising.

I can't stand when people equate giving money to a church "charity".

Funding your mega-church's shiny new basketball court and gold-plated statues is not "Charity", it's as self-serving as a buying into a time-share.

FFS, his religion is not an issue. The fact that he's the farking Smiler and his only policy stances are "whatever will get me elected" is the issue.

Besides, you're all wrong. You should be making offerings of rice, salt and sake at a shrine to Inari.

I wonder how much of that money ended up being used to deny same sex couples the equal protection of the law?

Judaism is goofy
Christian pile goofy on top of it.
Mormons pile goofy on top of that.

so yeah mormons have the biggest pile of goofy. (for Abrahamic religions)
Sufism excluded

The natural response being that at least Mormons were more progressive than the South

Yeah, well, religious organizations are charities. See Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

I've been to the town where Joseph Smith started the LDS church. That place is sad and depressed, and the Mormons have made no effort to support it. They have their little pageant once a year, but very few mormons live there. Huntsman or his dad started a factory there, but the profits were too small so he sold it to a different company. It's a shame that they treat their religion's jerusalem like a black sheep sibling.

Sorry, to be clear, that's Palmyra, NY. Nearish to Rochester.

It depends on if he donated to the church's philanthropic arm (if they have one) or just dumped it in the general fund. From the article it looks like the latter.

Since they were pretty much thrown out of that place I am not surprised my their general apathy.

This one's a bit obvious. They didn't leave there willingly. There are enough bad stories after their treasured ones.

Its not a charity when you are required to pay 10% pretax to stay in good standing with the "church".

2012-01-18 05:50:42 PM
Subby, everyone knows that If you don't pay your tithing, you don't get your own planet on the third tier of heaven. It's simple logic - is this too hard for you morons to grasp?

No, but it helps prop up the perennial lie that conservatives are more charitable than liberals, so they've got that going for them, which is nice.

So part of Mitts millions goes towards LDS's efforts to fight gay marriage around the country. I guess he really does stand for conservative values.

Because the real Jerusalem is everything Christianity/Judaism/Islam want it to be. I bet they're actually ok with it being more or less what it was when the church was started.

/there's a reason why they left

I don't know about that. African Americans weren't allowed to hold Mormon priesthood until 1978. And even that is surprising since the scriptures say they have darker skin because African Americans' ancestors were evil (2 Nephi 5:21). Don't forget their scriptures outlawing interracial marriage as well. (2 Nephi 5:23) And best of all, if a black person repents for their sins, they will supposedly turn white. (3 Nephi 2:15-16)

Actually it tends to go towards paying for rent and food of members who would otherwise starve to death.

A good education is a BIG thing here, although they don't seem to care until college... Even for normal jobs that you'd get with just experience usually you're gonna be competing with a ton of locals who have degrees. Also, we seem to have a LOT of companies with either corporate or at least regional headquarters here. I think it's a part of our supposed "business friendly" atmosphere. Around here that means they are friendly if you are a business that has revenues in the 7 figure and up range, but they aren't friendly at all if you dare to be a restaurant owner that would like to have a bar in your restaurant...

It's a mixed blessing, the people are nice, they make nice neighbors, and it's pretty quiet and safe. The mountains are beautiful, skiing is great, hunting and fishing abound and we have the southern part of the state, Ed Abbey country, Moab, Canyonlands, Arches, etc... On the other hand, we have a bunch of theocratic hypocrites making our laws.

Except for the parts they don't (there's a good portion of the BoM where Lamanites are righteous, Nephites are wicked and the skin colors are the same as before).

It's not charity when there's an expectation of conversion. Lots of groups do this. I believe you will find there is a definite exchange being made which means it's not so much a charity as a purchase or gamble.

Oddly enough, their God keeps revealing himself as being a Liberal, with his revisions, yet they keep at the Conservative derp.

While I generally give a rat's pitootie what a politicians religious beliefs are I could never vote for a practicing Scientologist or Mormon. Both religions have drunk from the crazy train and are tightly controlled by their leaders. A practicing Mormon U.S. president would never go against the church on an issue like Gay Marriage, Israel, or abortion. Mitt still proudly wears the underwear with the Masonic symbols on them. Therefore he is not qualified to be president.
