So it pays to be a reporter or to be rich enough to get an MRI every few years?

Makes me understand why the rich die old.

I'd like to see the longevity stats for rich v poor people (from the same country)

Steve Jobs...could anyone who was a rich, selfish, asshole do a better job of not seeming like a rich, selfish, asshole?

MRI's fore everyone! Then the economies of scale will bring down prices.

HA, who am I kidding. We all know prices only go up in health care.

Never mind the added risk of all of those x-rays from the full-body CT scan....

Steve... Jobs? The guy who drove his Mercedes with no license plate because he knew he could pay the fines? Famous for his screaming rants? Parked in handicapped spaces? Denying paternity of his daughter?

He did some cool stuff, to be sure, but I thought the widely-accepted image of him was "rich, selfish asshole."

It's an interesting article, and if you are married and in your 30s, 40s, and have kids, it might be to your interest to go back and listen to the video.

Basically, it just says try and take care of yourself, no one else will do it for you.

I think in certain areas, boards like Fark being one, a decent percentage can be found that are aware of these things. I don't think many people outside those areas are as aware of it. Even on Fark, the Jobs as sainted tech-martyr type love was a bit sickening.

I'd still like to debunk the myth that poor people can shop for groceries at McDonalds and Circle K cheaper than I could shop at a grocery store. Given a 5$ budget per meal, I could eat better, and be more full, buying good food, than buying McDonalds. Whether I needed to prep/cook the food or eat it right there in line. Bad food isn't cheaper, it's more convenient or easier, and that's why you see it gobbled up by people who were never given the skills to shop well and prepare healthy.

I could feed myself for a week, for what a family of four spends for four McFatty Meals and the new 64oz Colonic Cola.

rudemix: Bad food isn't cheaper

No, it's not cheaper. It's a HELL OF A LOT cheaper.

You can fill yourself up on highly processed crap foods for cheap, or you can go to the fresh fruits and vegetables section and pay a ton of money for food that isn't going to fill you up nearly as much.

This reporter needs to watch a couple seasons of House. Hopefully he will learn the following:

1) It's not Lupus.
2) Full body scans are useless.
3) It's not Lupus.
4) Stop lying to your doctor.
5) Stop lying to yourself.
6) It's still not Lupus.
7) Ok, it might be Lupus.

Also, for reference, Steve Jobs was a selfish asshole long before he was rich. My favorite telling bit besides some of the ones mentioned above is how he talked his closest friend, Wozniak into optimizing an arcade circuit board for Atari. He promised to split the bonus 50/50, which was still screwing Woz as Jobs didn't lift a finger on it and then lied to Woz about how much they gave him as a bonus in order to give him a smaller cut, closer to 10% of the bonus. Denying Lisa by claiming sterility really tops the list ultimately.

I'm glad he was so arrogant he thought he could will away his cancer. In death he cemented the fact that he never grew out of the arrogance for all to see. When he was younger much of what he did I could write off as immaturity. At 50+ still acting like in that manner, yep karma caught up to him.

I grew up pretty much dirt poor (for the US). Spending $5 per head per meal as an average would be exorbitant. Try thinking cost for 5 kids and 2 adults for 2 boxes of hamburger helper and associate ingredients or 3 boxes of generic Mac & Cheese. Average food cost was topped out around $10-15 per day for all 7 of us together. McDonald's was the, "oooh, we get to eat out this week, neato," thing when I was a kid. Bennigan's or similar was a huge treat a few times a year for birthdays and such.

I admit, ultimately we weren't bottom of welfare poor (no welfare until my father injured himself at work).

You sound ignorant of what poor is.

Hamburger Helper: $1
1 lb. ground beef: $2.50
Bus fare home: $1.50

There's my $5...

/I buy chicken breasts and pork loins when they drop to $2/lb.
//A bowl of rice and beans costs less than a salad.
