They're right.

Outside of internet dorks like us, who really knows what reddit is? And more important, who cares if it goes down? It wasn't until Wikipedia said they were going dark that this protest got national media attention.

This isn't asinine at all, for the reasons Aarontology pointed out. Reddit is full of very savvy internet users, many of whom are going to be far more informed on this than your average Facebook user. My parents are on Facebook. They wouldn't know Reddit from Adam.

What the f*ck is a Reddit?

Doesn't Facebook have way, way, way more users?

Or Google. Then people would start rioting.

Well, save that for every circle of friends, is the geek who forwards a bajillion links on subjects, and sparks discussions of issues. A blackout on several webcomics, then sends folks posting about said blackouts, and then sends out more and more forwards of the petition, and that gains traction. You know, sort of like that kooky Occupy thingie.

The protests are then covered by folks who are still up, and that keeps things rolling along. Which is the point.

2012-01-18 11:19:57 AM
img1.fark.net tag in protest too?

Facebook, Google, Yahoo.. it all needs to go black to get the point across.

We need more Anti-SOPA magnetic ribbons.

Magnetic ribbons would definitely be a good start. Also, don't forget the importance of badges for profile pages. Someone needs to start making some "I Survived SOPA Day" badges that we veterans of this day can start posting in our profiles to raise awareness and make others want to join the fight.

Also, people should start posting in different colors to show their support. Like, since it's White Out Day on Fark, everybody should post in white from now on.

And maybe we could establish some guidelines for posting just to make sure that a correct tone and approach to this massive movement being spawned is maintained throughout the day. And then, for each greenlit thread, somebody could post the rules and guidelines up top so that everybody coming in knows what to do.

I think all of those would be really important steps for us to show our power and the deep depth of our support.

This got me thinking that it'd be funny to see copyright holders go after people who put the wrong kind of sticker on their car.

A single complaint from one person about copyrighted material is enough to activate the bill's laws and shut down the site permanently.. Proof that copyrighted material was actually stolen is not required.

IIRC, the site would be shutdown, and then the DOJ would request that facebook remove all instances of that link from their site. If they do not comply, the site remains shut down. Almost an impossibility for a site the scope of facebook to do.

It's either that, or they shutdown after the first request for a wipe is not adhered to.

I actually think it's good that Facebook is still open; people need somewhere to go to discuss all the sites they can't visit. Wikipedia's blackout and Google's "doodle" are two very heavy-hitters.

Whoever's doing it, make sure it contains some copyrighted images. Used under Fair Use, of course.

Maybe not a complete shutdown, but a page come up before you can do anything on the site explaining what is going on. That way you can inform people and get discussions started on Facebook, and since many congressmen have Facebook pages people can then send their comments to them.

They have to scrub references rogue material AND institute a filtering process to prevent such posts in the future.

Have fun moderating a hundred million profiles constantly.

Also, tell every ISP around to start blocking Facebook.com DNS requests.

MaudlinMutantMollusk: Shostie: What the f*ck is a Reddit?

I'm still a Farker, but I got pissed at a couple of things around here a while back (a flood of paid links of shiatty content and a temp ban I felt I didn't deserve), and started looking for a new home.

Reddit's a nice place if you have a niche interest, since it has user-created categories. There's a sub-category for anything that has enough interest to keep it alive. I'm primarily a Redditor now, but Fark's still best for the Showbiz & Geek tabs and photoshop contests... but for my fannish needs and a selection of sections far superior to the Foobies tab, I go to Reddit.

I don't recommend you leave Fark (if I thought that, I wouldn't be here posting, would I?), I DO recommend you ALSO check out Reddit.

Facebook should shut down for one hour. They should replace their main page with one instance of copyrighted work. Maybe a picture of Mickey Mouse.

One hour is all it would take. All hell would break loose. I mean, it's not like anyone would be hurt or anything, but people would HOWL.

The story is everywhere today. More sites don't need to go dark, the message is getting heard loud and clear. Already you see congress members changing their minds. Whether this will actually make a difference in the outcome is left to be seen.

Even if all I used was Facebook, I would know about it from friends posting comments and such about it.

TheAngryGazebo: I actually think it's good that Facebook is still open; people need somewhere to go to discuss all the sites they can't visit. Wikipedia's blackout and Google's "doodle" are two very heavy-hitters.

Google could've made a wiki like page that you would have to click through to get to results.

Completely shutting down google like wiki did is probably a little heavy handed since many don't know how to get around it. But, I think they could do a little more since many people might just see the black bar and not think anything of it (also, people search through tool bars in their browser these days without going to the google page)

If Reddit is "blacked out" couldn't he just remove his goggles, revealing his shiny eyes, and continue doing whatever it was that he was doing?

This had a big headline on CNN and Fox this morning. Probably other news sites as well.

Bottom line, anyone who could be reached, has been. I don't think people who think the internet solely consists of Facebook would understand why SOPA is bad.

I'm kinda upset that both of my senators responded with canned answers about how piracy is dangerous and the bills were only going after rogue foreign sites.

I informed them that continued support for the bill would cost them my vote...but I didn't vote for either one of them anyway, so meh.

Shostie: What the f*ck is a Reddit?

Reddit.com is a sweltering hole of pig shiat and unfunny memes. Its user base consists of Liberal God-less f***ots and cynical neck-bearded BETA males who have spent their entire lives being rejected by members of the opposite sex. All of this had led to the formation of an online cesspool full of bitter nerds and socially retarded manboys. The Liberal Butthurt Syndrome exhibited by Redditors is so well-defined that some of them have even tried to edit this article in order cut out all of the nasty bits about Liberals... only to find out that their butthurt edits are easily reverted by the undo button.
Discussion on reddit usually consists of one party expressing a leftist viewpoint, the next person agreeing with that viewpoint and a third person making a pun out of the original post. After this point, we hit tldr where it dissolves into a massive circlejerk and an orgy of confirmation bias and self-reaffirmation. To receive karma on Reddit, one must have the political views of an angst-riddled pseudo-socialist college teenager who regularly visits Infowars.com and discusses the perils of corporatism over coffee at Starbucks. Or, if politics isn't your thing and you have a vagina, you can simply post tits. Its politics section serves as an echo chamber for dejected Liberal Arts majors who think that socialism is a trendy alternative to capitalism. Its gaming section is littered with nostalgic posts about popular games from the 90s and complaints about Call of Duty being too accepted by the unwashed masses. Its worldnews section is a place where self-loathing Americans, Islamophiles and Jew-hating conspiracy theorists can get together and express their unwavering support for Iran and Hamas. Its atheism section acts as a platform for smug 19-year-olds who want to sit on their high-horses and post Facebook screenshots of themselves arguing with family members that have had the nerve to openly express their Christian beliefs.
To this day, Reddit users still view their website as a secret online community for counter-cultural warriors and intellectuals, even though the site sees millions of unique visitors and is littered with inane pictures of cats and other painfully unfunny memes. The online consensus states unanimously that users on Reddit seek only to further pervert the "Advice Animals" meme (which was, for the record, never lulzy). If you've ever used the phrase "meta-discourse" and don't have the balls to get your memes from 4chan the way God intended it, Reddit is the place for you!!

Cataholic: Wait...I thought corporations shouldn't be allowed to engage in political speech.

They shouldn't. But SOPA/PIPA is the result of corporations 'engaging in political speech' by buying Congresscritters. The only real way to fight that kind of 'speech' is with other sources of big money; Congress won't listen to their actual constituents.

Lobbying laws need to be *seriously* reformed. But until then, I'm happy to fight fire with fire.
