DId you hear what happened when the stewardess backed into the plane's spinning propeller?

Dis-assed-her.

Hahahahahahaha ug.

A blonde walked into a propeller. Is this news? It would be news if she didn't walk into it.

Before this gets too out of hand, it was dark, and a spinning propeller is not easy to see in the dark.

Not that this is explains why she didn't listen to the guy who knew what he was talking about and apparently turned around to do exactly the opposite of what she was told....

A motor drives a shaft attached to the blades, which are shaped specifically to force... you might want to grab a pen and some paper and take notes because this actually gets quite complicated...

To be fair, I've had a window seat on night flights during the holidays, and the lights--especially on isolated farm houses--can be very pretty.

In her defense, regular people shouldn't be telling models what they can and cannot do.

Never saw that picture before. Of all the low flybys I've seen (videos of), I think a low pass in a V-22 has to be the most insane.

But topping that, who the fark stood in front of it to film it!?

(I assume it was a remote camera on a tripod, but I'm probably wrong.)

((And these are probably typical maneuvers for an Osprey.))

How acceptable is it for you to leave the prop spinning while you exchange passengers?

Jeez is that a pic of her before or after she got smacked with a propeller?

2012-01-18 02:14:05 PM
Hmm... wouldn't it make sense for the pilot to stop the propeller before the passengers disembark? Best way to prevent accidents is to eliminate the possibility of them happening.

2012-01-18 02:15:11 PM
Moot point.

Even if he did tell her, his responsibility as pilot in command was to shut down the engine before the passenger gets out, specifically for this reason.

It is still his fault.

I saw one once; looks like an eggbeater the way those props move: fast, but not like a normal propeller that's a blur.

"I do what I want!" *snap*

I think that about covers it. Some folks don't listen to instructions, or don't understand why those instructions apply to them, or simply don't care about what someone else says and insist on doing it their own way. It's the same mentality that makes folks take blade guards off table saws, or skip the eyewear when sanding metal, or stick their hand in the way of a blade - because they think that "well, I'm not stupid, so I won't have an accident", or "well, I'm not a noob, so I won't have an accident", or "well, that guy's just being paranoid, so I won't have an accident."

They're the same folks that have the farking gall to be surprised when the inevitable accident occurs, and then scream "why didn't you tell me", or "you shouldn't have let me be an idiot", or "it wasn't supposed to happen like that".

How odd....

When the story FIRST broke, the pilot said nothing about warning her, just that he didn't realize that she'd gotten out of the plane. Glad he had enough time to get his story straight, good for him.

Also, interestingly enough, there were MULTIPLE pilots on the boards for the story on Yahoo where I first read this that said that they would NEVER let a passenger enter or exit a plane while the propeller was still moving. Sounds like this guy was saving up to install a revolving door on HIS airplane. I wouldn't let him off, he is obviously not followi9ng one of the cardinal rules of safety.

Of course, if anyone thinks I'm wrong, I can ask my father in law about this as well, he has his degree in aeronautical engineering, flew and owned his own plane until the mid 90's when the insurance wasn't worth it, and was a certified instructor, I'm sure he would have something to say about this.

From what I heard when this story first broke, it's completely unacceptable. Without question.

He should have shut down the engine even if he was just changing passengers. I bet he was trying to cut (no pun intended) the delay between flights. My thoughts are that she had been drinking or something, because it would take some effort to not be aware of the propeller and walk forward instead of straight perpendicular from the plane.

Just to be fair to the girl:

I was trying to find the article where the pilot first said the didn't even know she'd gotten out when I ran into one that said that the engine is MUCH noisier than the prop, and that she apparently came into it from the front, as if she came back to thank the pilot. It was dark, she didn't hear or see the prop, and since it pulls air in from the front, there wasn't really wind. I'm sure she didn't realize the diameter of the propeller either, so she might have thought she was clear. Obviously she needs better situational awareness, but the pilot is far from blameless in this. it's not like it's a pain to shut down, either. Same article said that the prop on this plane stops almost immediately.

Conclusion: Although this woman is a twit for not paying attention(Almost like reaching under the running lawnmower to clean a jam), the pilot shouldn't be flying anymore, his laziness almost cost a life.

I know we cut corners for our troops, but when I was aircrew on C-130's we'd land, and swap out people and equipment with the props running the whole time.

Now mind you, the crew chief, with a VERY long extension cord on his headset would go out of the forward door and stand in front of the wing, just past the second prop at a healthy distance creating a "velvet rope" if you would preventing anyone from being stupid and walking into a spinning prop.

If the pilot was that concerned, he would have done the same, you don't let off passengers and just assume they're okay, they're your responsibility and you make sure they're okay.

2012-01-18 02:48:52 PM
Fark the pilot. He's responsible.

/a propellor? what is it?

From what it sounds like is that she left the plane safely and turned back, as if she were coming back to thank the pilot, add to that the fact that it was dark, and the engine is noisier than the propeller, plus the fact that the air is being blown back(So she wouldn't have noticed a face full of wind), and it sounds like just 'maybe' she hadn't been drinking and just made a mistake totally sober.
