It is an irresponsible response and a disservice to people who rely on them for information and use their services. It is also an abuse of power given the freedoms these companies enjoy in the marketplace today.
It's a dangerous and troubling development when the platforms that serve as gateways to information intentionally skew the facts to incite their users in order to further their corporate interests
.
I imagine that this is the talking point that Fox News will use today with a straight face.

So what are the non-profit Wikipedia's corporate interests? It's a good thing that the MPAA is an altruistic body with no fiduciary concerns at all to talk from a place of moral idealism.

F*ck off, Fascist.
In a shocking turn of events, Wiki is perfectly free to do whatever they damn well please with their site as they are breaking no laws. However, your dumbass would like to change that.
Just think, in two years when these bills gets stuffed in to an appropriations bill and passed with no fanfare, you can shut down Wikipedia for having the audacity to question your views and disagreeing with your stance. It'll be great.

And that's the big worry...the companies/entities behind the bills aren't going to let them die...they'll just be reincarnated and stuffed into page 6,589 of some 'give farmers more money for crops---oh, and all this internet stuff too' bill.

In all honesty, if I tried to cite Wikipedia to influence my boss in anything, he'd probably hurt himself laughing as he kicked me out the door.
I can't think of too many corporations that understand just how heavy handed this piece of shiat is. Hopefully enough of the heavy hitters will step up and teach the children in Congress that restricting freedom of information and access to information aligns them with the thugs in Syria.

Sooo....
Irresponsible: using your available platform to spread information to customers about a bill that, if adopted, will have significant negative consequences on those customers by effectively assuming them to be criminals simply for using a legitimate service that criminals also happen to use.
Totally not irresponsible at all: using untold millions in greasy, unmarked bills to buy off politicians so they vote for the bill and adopt what amounts to a private police structure that allows private industry to bring about severe punitive punishments based almost entirely on unsubstantiated allegations regarding what some people might be doing with a service that is otherwise legitimate.
Seriously, just wow... that is some brazen, ultra-level bullshiat right there, Mr. Dodd.

Seeing as how most of the congresspeoples openly laughed at the idea of not understanding the actual legislation and "not being a nerd", I doubt they really care what this would do to the internet.
The motion picture and music industry donated hundreds of thousands or millions of dollars and that's all that matters. Hell, they didn't even see the need for having technical experts show up for discussions during the committee meetings.
