There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Anas that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.

Wow. Google Streetview was rubbish back in the 1940s. I couldn't even zoom in.

/Cool video subby. Anyone have a link to the same streets today?

Flint Ironstag: Anyone have a link to the same streets today?

The first clip starts on (probably) 2nd and Olive. Makes a left onto Grand, then continues on Grand until about 6th or Wilshire.

I can't place the next two clips, but in the second clip, it looks like they go by City Hall Park. If that is correct, they then make a left onto Main.

It's like playing LA Noire.

It's changed a bit....

Check out the traffic signals... a good shot of one is at 3:39 .. in one part you can see a signal transitioning from go to stop.

That's cool, but it made me feel queasy after about two minutes. Things are very... tilty.

2012-01-18 10:17:32 AM
Yeah, whoever digitized it should have ran it through an anti-shake filter at least. Oh well, still damn impressive.

Yes. But check it out.... the tunnel at 2nd and Hill is there. Right when the clip starts (0:30), the camera is on 2nd, above Olive (Olive is the cross street). You can see the railing above the tunnel.

Old shot from below the tunnel.
And Now.

at 0:57, the Disney Concert Hall will be where the brick wall and palm tree are. Needless to say, all the buildings on Grand are gone. Also, because Grand is elevated, there isn't a sharp descent like in the clip.

Looks like it ends right at about Grand and Hope.

I mean we totally farked it up man, we farked up this payoff, we got the kidnappers all mad at us, and Lebowski, ya know, he yelled at me a lot but he didn't do anything, huh? No, I'm saying, if he knows I'm a fark-up, why does he leave me in charge of getting his wife back? Because he doesn't farking want her back! He no longer digs her, it's all a show! Ok, so then why doesn't he give a shiat about his million bucks? I mean, he knows we never handed off the briefcase, but he never asked for it back. The million bucks was never in the briefcase! The asshole was hoping that they would kill her! You threw out a ringer for a ringer!

I was way ahead of the finance company. I knew they'd be becoming around and I wasn't taking any chances. So I kept it across the street in a parking lot behind Rudy's shoeshine parlor. Rudy never asked any questions about your finances... he'd just look at your heels and know the score.

Too bad it wasn't filmed facing forward.

So I let her have it, straight between the eyes. She didn't fool me for a minute, not this time. I knew I had hold of a red-hot poker and the time to drop it was before it burned my hand off. I stopped at a drive-in for a bottle of beer, the one I had wanted all along, only I wanted it worse now, to get rid of the sour taste of her iced tea, and everything that went with it. I didn't want to go back to the office, so I dropped by a bowling alley at Third and Western and rolled a few lines to get my mind thinking about something else for a while.

Looks to me surprisingly like San Francisco. Too bad they dozed all that beautiful architecture.

Back when some people pronounced it "Loss AN-guh-less" (hard "g").

2:00 - ZELDA
2:48 - CUT RATE DRUGS
3:07 - AUTO LAUNDRY (huh?)
4:07 - RENT A CAR, $2.50 a day!
4:08 - How did that "no left turn" sign not get run over every 5 minutes?

2012-01-18 02:54:21 PM
Even in the 40's there was shaitty street parking. Some things never change.

2012-01-18 02:56:38 PM
It was probably filmed in 1948 or 1949. GMC pickups looked pretty much the same those two years.

Yes, 2nd and Olive. The left on to Grand, then past the ATT building (large black angled wall) then right onto 5th, past the library and then right on to Flower St.

Reel change still on Flower St.

I get lost after that.

They ended up at Tommy's.

Looked at the second and third clips again. Second Clip starts at 2nd and Olive also. Makes a left onto Grand. (Compare the clips by looking at the building on the left of the screen at the corner when the camera turns from 2nd onto Grand.) Goes down Grand to 5th. Turns right on 5th. What I thought was City Hall Park is actually a park that doesn't exist anymore. The Camera then drives past the LA Library, makes a right on Flower. Then the second clip stops.

The third clip goes up Flower and makes a right on either 3rd or 2nd. Flower doesn't go through to 2nd now. I'm guessing the camera makes a right on 3rd, goes up the hill, and then the clip ends.

Probably obvious but these were used as the background scenery in movies were someone was supposed to be driving. They would film the actor in a prop car against a green screen with a film like this playing on it.

A couple of interesting sights:

1:50-A person in the third-story window of the building on the right-hand side looking out

3:43- Guy in the park that's no longer there sees the camera and waves

And I think I may have spotted some gentlemen not wearing hats outdoors. Weird!

Yes it is. Now, fun question: is there a movie with this exact clip in it? Psycho has a long scene but it's from a later era.

Really I'm Black: RexTalionis: It's like playing LA Noire.

I hadn't heard of this game before, and I rarely play games, but I may have to pick it up...

Anyway though, I wonder if Jack Nicholson was paid for the stealing of his image.

Smog wasn't invented yesterday? The road surfaces look like today's asphalt surfaces. Aside from the old cars, this could almost be a modern video.

The first thing I noticed was how short the palm trees were.

What's up with them, anyway? Why did they plant them there?
