I submitted this and honestly I think it was a typo unless they actually have jewelry that expensive there.

never mind I went and checked their site (new window) good god. For one, who buys fine jewelry at Walmart or Sams? Secondly, why would they have stuff like this (not necessarily this particular item) at a Tulsa Sam's Club. And the most important question, do they pay the Chinese kids who assemble these pieces of jewelry more than the ones assembling my plastic containers?

/although I wouldn't doubt Walmart probably buys blood diamonds.

It's nothing compared to Costco. They had a $1,000,000 IF diamond in a platinum setting available. I've seen $400,000 rings too.

i would expect stuff like that at say a chain like Zale's or Helzberg's heck even the local owned jewelry stores here in Oklahoma like Jay's and B.C. Clark but a freaking box store? And that part of Tulsa isn't a particularly good part of town anyway.

I worked in one for several years, and they do. Few locations carry the high-end stuff in store, but you can special-order for delivery to any location.

The problem is that you'll get the cut-rate stuff that only Bentonville will request. That, and the company acts as if its workers were its worst enemy, especially with temporary labor as a labor management weapon (for things as silly as those people that give out samples). Never mind all the PR they'll fly in just to get the store there and marginalize the opposition.

Shame that saner and less-antagonistic alternatives aren't more prevalent.

Okay, serious question here.

I just posted above about a two karat diamond ring, and all of a sudden the ad at the of Fark is for a jewelry store - and has a picture of a diamond ring.

Are these things related?

Given how Walmart acts against US citizens, they would setup a supply chain to make sure blood diamonds were the only thing available. Then they'd say how cheap it is and that you're un-American for objecting.

My GF has recently been ring shopping. Continually telling me she's worried that I'd worry that she's shopping. I continually tell her not to worry. But she worries. Anyways I'm rambling, she went to Costco's site and was shocked by the same thing. They sell $35,000 rings apparently. I love the fact that no matter what you tell people you paid for it, when you say you got it from Costco, they are all gonna laugh at you. Just something about it. McDonald's could start selling $3500 golden M necklaces but I'm not sure I'm qualified to make that analogy considering how terrible it is. Rambling again. I got nothing worth reading. Thank you for reading.

I'm going to bed.

I read an article where in many cases you are better off buying a diamond from Wal-Mart or Sams Club than a lot of independent jewelers, especially if you don't know diamonds. The quality is just as good and you are guarenteed a quality stone. Some indepndent jewelers have been known to sell an impure diamond(one with carbon specs) or one with a bad cut but is not obvious to the eye for full/premium prices to unsuspecting customers.

I am fortunate enough to make plenty of money. However, I also did it the bootstrappy way via a business that I started and so know the value of a dollar. I bought my fiancee an $11000 engagement ring at Sam's Club some years back. By all accounts, once you're resigned to the ethical thing that you're going to drop cash on a mostly worthless rock, this was an excellent purchase, relatively speaking. It's a far, far nicer ring than I have seen anywhere else for the price and far ourshines the similarly priced rings that my colleagues were able to source in Europe. She knows I got it at Sam's club - we went and picked it out together. The amount we saved on the ring easily paid for our trip to the USA plus probably another 10k to spare.

note that only their 'in store' stuff presented very good value (at the time). Their 'special order' stuff was regularly priced. I have no idea what the situation there is now--all I see when I go to sam's club on my trips to the usa these days is that the quality of the furniture they sell (I buy furniture for some of my european vacation and rental places there and ship it as in the past it was both inexpensive and durable) is of far lesser quality than it used to be, presumably because of the dollar's fall and chinese labor market's rise. pity. i'd kill to find the sorts of "whalen" bookshelves that they used to sell there for $150 a pop at even twice the price these days.

2012-01-18 06:29:28 AM
False alarm...turns out it was just 10,000 rings that went for $3.50 each.

Yes. Fark has adopted Google-metrics for their ads (now known as Fark-o-metrics). The best part is that liters are now getting ads based on what TF-ers type in their private TF-land. Hilarity is ensuing.

I have have been working for Sam's club for over 8 years now. My wife's engagment ring came from Sam's club and came with a IGI card saying everything about the ring and how much it apprised for. When I had it insured, my insurance guy couldn't belive what I paid for it vs how much it was appraised for. It's not a compleatly bad company, just the diet coke of evil. They have alwasys taken care of me.

Yup! The Internet wants you to buy more jewelry. Farkers just want more pics of you. Soon, there will be an ad asking all farkers "Have you seen GD? Want to see more?"

If you want good bargains, go to pawn shops in or near nice neighborhoods. A lot of folks are pawning/selling their jewelry in this economy, and there are some good deals out there.

2012-01-18 08:06:11 AM
Not only does WalMart buy blood diamonds, they ASK for them. ;-)

/that same ring would be $35,099 at Target, so Sam's is totally a better deal.

2012-01-18 08:18:56 AM
Diamonds are mass produced, so why wouldn't they belong in a big box store?

The myth that diamonds are rare and precious was busted a long time ago. There is enough diamond in the world for everyone to have as much as they want, but certain people don't want you to know that so you will think that little hunk of rock you bought for your girlfriend is something rare and special.

Only if you know how to evaluate a stone, because that guy at the pawn shop isn't going to help you even though he does know what he's doing.

You are so out of touch with the reality of what the dynamic is in the wal mart culture, I have to believe you have never even been in one of their stores.

Sad that you are right, because people care so much about brand image. that $35k ring is probably $50k at a regular jewelry shop, or $60k at Cartier, but it's so much about the name on the box.

Why would anyone pay that much for a ring to begin with? I doubt the rich would shop at Costco anyway.

Can this turn into a "I'm better than you" wedding thread! My engagement ring was handcrafted in Europe, we bought it at an antique shop for only 65 bucks!

My fiancee's ring was 20 and it's made outta tungsten.

shortymac: Why would anyone pay that much for a ring to begin with? I doubt the rich would shop at Costco anyway.

You have no idea how many business owners shop at Costco and Sam's Club (it's cheaper than Sysco for the tightwads). Many of them fall into the lower end of the 1%, and nearly all are at least in the 5%. Small business owners being notorious tightwads, why WOULDN'T they want to shop for their jewelry at the cheapest possible place, especially while they're out resupplying and given that they get 3-5% cash back on Costco purchases on their Costco AmEx?

/At least half the people in line around me are always buying a pallet of soda, smokes, and other gas station supplies.
