I came to make a Star Trek IV reference based soley on the headline, only to realize that TFA started with that, and 3/5ths of the posters already had that covered.

Can't tell whether initial participator RTFA or not.

Why did it have to be transparent aluminum anyway? They weren't building an aquarium.

It saddens me that I, not even a full on Trekkie, let alone Trekker have to point this out, even the article got it wrong... They traded the formula for what the guy had on hand. They did not wait for him to work out the formula and make the fat ass panels.

Why? Despite the "gel" moniker, the stuff is hard and rigid. It'd make a terrible mattress, unless you're an ascetic monk or something.

He had his finger shot off by friendly fire during WW2 if I remember correctly.

Right but it didn't need to be transparent necessarily. The first thing Scotty thought of was transparent aluminum instead of just regular aluminum or steel.

I seem to recall that there might have been a movie that referenced a similar concept. Probably a science fiction movie of some sort. Anyone know anything about that?

Going to flex my nerd muscles here and correct the article:

If not, let me set up the clip: The crew of the Enterprise has gone into the past to retrieve some whales, OK? And take them "back to the future," to coin a phrase. But Scotty has a problem: He needs stuff to build a giant whale tank on the ship, but he has no goods to trade with, because, you know, in the future they only work to better themselves and nobody but a Ferengi would stoop to carrying money around. So Scotty barters his knowledge of 24th-century materials technology with a 20th-century engineer, who agrees to make him what he needs in exchange

Actually, that's not what happens. As the article stated, Scotty has no money. He asks the guy what he needs, and he tells him plastics that are 6" thick, which he has in stock, but he has no means to pay for it. So he gives them the formula for Transparent Aluminum to purchase the 6" plastic walls. The 20th century engineer does not make it. In fact, he makes a comment about how it would take years to even figure out the nature of the matrix Scotty gave him.

I guess due to watching the movie not that long ago...

They needed the transparent aluminum because of it's strength, it being much stronger, lighter and thinner than regular metals.

For what they needed, they "sold" the formula in exchange.

Someone should point out how the article got it wrong about what Scotty traded for one.. I feel the thread is lacking this knowledge.
