This only works if another competitor stages a run-in in the middle of his match. And, since Kurt is in TNA now, the run-in person has to bring a chair covered in bard wire.

I'm not sure about Unlikely. He does have a Gold Medal (it's real, not just some stupid wrestling gimmick)
And GMJ, in TNA, it's not as much of a "run-in" as it is a "stagger-in"

Plus he's 43, and no one has ever won a wrestling medal after the age of 37. It would be impressive enough if any 43-year-old medaled in wrestling, let alone one with a decade plus of hard living.

You know, I kind of think that's the brilliant part of it all. If he fails, then he will have lost nothing, since who expected him to succeed anyway? But if he does succeed... now that will be a hell of a story.

Kurt Angle defeated Samoa Joe, who was on an eighteen-month undefeated streak going into October of 2006. That was just five years ago. I think Angle will be okay. They call them
amateur
wrestlers for a reason, lol. Once Angle gets them hoisted up for the Angle Slam, it's going to be all over. The ref is going to stop it because "it's against the rules" or some crap, but we all know the real reason, and that's because Kurt Angle won a gold medal with a broken' freakin' neck! Oh, it's true. The three I's are returning to the Olympic Games, baby. Oh, it's
damn
true.

FTA:
"All this, plus his advanced age, make Angle's Olympic comeback the most improbable of storylines for London.
Yet in the Olympics, the most improbable stories are the ones that most capture our hearts. The 1980 Miracle on Ice. The amazing feats of the ageless Dara Torres. The stunning eight gold medals of Michael Phelps in Beijing. The Greco-Roman wrestler Rulon Gardner, beating the unbeatable Russian back in Sydney.
And if Angle makes the U.S. team at the Olympic wrestling trials in April, his improbable comeback will be the next Olympic story that speaks to us: to focusing on a dream despite being enveloped by tragedy; to getting a second chance at repairing a blemished reputation; and, ultimately, to understanding what's important in life. And then chasing after it. Before time runs out."
This is exactly why the Olympics are unwatchable in the United States. Instead of actually showing the Olympics, they show fluff pieces about people crying. Chances are if he makes it the wrestling coverage will consist of 30 minutes of sappy video, 45 seconds of actual wresting, and 29 minutes and 15 seconds of gymnastics previews.

Actually NBC has gotten better, at the last summer Olympics you could watch wrestling online, and much of it with no commentary even. Also they did show some on one of NBC's networks. I'm hoping they do the online thing again, was fun watching sports with no commentary or in some cases just a single commentator.

FTFA : "
But there's something else he's after, too, in these Olympics. His legacy has been tarnished. Two DUI arrests last year, for one.
Then the report that he failed his medicals before attempting to fight his first mixed martial arts fight in the UFC
, which many interpreted as failing a drug test. (Angle says he never heard why he failed his medicals, but it couldn't have been from a drug test; however, Angle never fought in the UFC.) And then the repeated accusations of performance-enhancing drug use - something Angle admits to, but says it was done with a doctor's prescription, and says he hasn't taken PEDs in six years. And the WWE drug test he failed in 2005? That was only because his legal prescription had expired, Angle says.
"
I remember that lame attempt at a gimmick here's
a youtube vid/radio interview
(NSFW lots of swearing) where Chuck Liddel laughs at him.
Here's Dana himself confirming the medical failure
(more NSFW) BUT I don't think it was PEDs that did him in. Dana wouldn't keep that under his hat if that was the reason.
Either Kurt was never serious about it or just thought he could make some quick cash like James Toney.

I'm guessing it has something to do with the whole broke his neck 5 times thing and not being cleared medically. The UFC is trying to make a mainstream push with FOX, the last thing they need is for someone to be paralyzed during a match.

Kurt won that medal WITH A BROKEN FREAKIN NECK! I believe in Angle just because nobody is more hellbent than he. Angle really hasn't wrestled that much for TNA in recent months, his body should be healthier than it has been. Id like to believe he's no longer addicted to pain medication as well. Hopefully he can go in there and wrestle for real!

Angle's attempt at getting into season 10 of TUF was a few years ago. It's doubtful his first sanctioned match would have debuted on Fox.
If he couldn't pass the med screening to fight in MMA because of the broken neck stuff how much lower are the standards for the Olympics ?

I wish him luck. The odds are definitely stacked against these older athletes who are trying to make a comeback. Dara Torres is likely an anomaly; I just don't see most athletes over 35 being able to compete physically against younger competition.
