Out of context, and you can be the judge on quality, but here is a recent post of mine:

So you like being the town pump for all the future lawn jockeys of the world? I guess everyone has aspirations, even Snooki.

Trolltastic for sure, but that's besides the point.

I expect that is true when the pseudonymous poster is an expert in the field who doesn't wish to tarnish his credentials. Now if you don't mind, I'll just get back to drafting this bill to impose Sharia Law in the United States by mandating mandatory free government-run European-style daycare creches for all children from three to six.

Makes sense to me in a way. This is probably going to come out as convoluted, but when we talk in person or on the phone, we have some expectation that the conversation is as fleeting as the medium. That is to say that the conversation will age, memories will fade, and it may be entirely forgotten. Casual conversations are generally in the moment and for the moment. For that reason, whenever we (as a society) want to codify a conversation or agreement, we "put it in writing". There's at least some implication of memory hole-ing as part of oral conversation (this is the part of my screed to which you respond with comments about your mom, my mom, or your ex).

On the Internet forums (or in email or texting or any one of a number of similar, electronic venues) we find ourselves in casual conversation not unlike those described above. The difference, though, is that electronic conversations may never go away. With this in mind, it's no surprise that the quality of an anonymous Internet dialogue may be better (looser, realer, more informative, etc.) than one in which all parties are positively identified. If you're putting your name on something, you're likely going to be more circumspect--or you may choose not to participate at all (especially in today's political climate).

Preempt: I don't have any illusion that this post or any other that your or I make is truly anonymous. We may be in the minority, though. Further, if I post under a pseudonym in response to an article in my local paper, my neighbors won't generally be able to figure out it was I who posted. The argument there is that anonymity probably exists on a continuum.

Posting pseudonymously (new word!) allows one to be frank even on controversial topics. Anyone who has no fear of the permanence of internet posts simply doesn't understand the permanence of internet posts.

It does not surprise me that people who post with their real names would post vapid or insipid things of little consequence, as they do in office banter. Also, they would say redundant things over and over again.

2012-01-17 05:46:02 PM
I think what's really going on here is that in most of the internet, using your real name is pretty stupid. As a result, only fairly stupid people use their real names. As a result, people who use their real names post stupid comments.

Anonymity is a marker, not a cause, in this case.

And, yes, Facebook is terrible. Not because it's a social network, but because it's a terrible social network, albeit a commercially successful one.

I do not think 99% of the people posting over in the politics tab are using their real names.

That's what I hate, when people say the same vapid or insipid things over and over and over again. They're vapid. And insipid. It's not worth reading. Just the same drivel, over and over and over and over. It's like they don't have anything new to say so they just keep repeating themselves, over and over - the same vapid; insipid drivel. They don't stop. They never stop. You'd think they would stop. But they don't stop. No, they never stop. That type never stops - just over and over and over again. It's so vapid. It's so insipid. It's so redundant. I can't stand it. Why don't they stop? For the love of God, why don't they stop? Just over and over and over again. The redundance is maddening. And they never have anything at all to say. Over and over and over again. Over and over and over again. It doesn't matter! It doesn't matter! Over and over and over again. Over and over and over again. Some of what you read online is just a waste of time. I say, it's just a waste of time.

As Americans, we should stand up and be counted. Our freedoms should not be sacrificed.

We should never so fearful to to exercise our hard-fought Constiutional rights that we do not to express ourselves; we should never be so craven as to hide behind a pseudonym; we should never be so deceiful as to masquerade as someone else, alive or dead.

I don't use my real name simply because, if my control-freak government employers found out I was posting opinions about subject matter I deal with on my day job AND using my name with it, I'd get reprimanded, maybe even fired. Hypothetically (their hypothetical situation, anyways), what I say online gets linked back to them as if they're saying it. Frankly, they're paranoid.

At work, for any media interviews or discourse with the general public I'm supposed to do, I've got to get my messages approved by a legion of communications staff, lawyers, and management (including the CEO) before I can say a damn thing. This very post would probably take a three to five days of review as it gets passed from desk to desk before it would get approval, possibly more time if there were any suggested revisions (which there always are because management has to tinker with everything).

/not kidding
//super fun job otherwise. their paranoia just encourages us never to talk to the media or general public

I wonder if they accounted for the type of people that are drawn to sites that use pseudonyms vs. sites that use real names. i.e. A lot of the truly stupid shiat I see posted on Facebook comes from people that would never stumble across a site like Fark.
