Not only is Donald Trump a cheapskate, but the largest donation doled out by his charitable foundation was to his son's foundation

I often try to mitigate 10s of thousands of dollars in taxes by donating hundreds of thousands of dollars to charity.

Does this actually offend people? People lie all the time to make themselves look more philanthropic. This is no surprise. The man lives to make money. He ain't gonna give it up so easily. Not every rich person is automatically charitable.

My teabagger uncle actually said that about recent WI GOP legislation (the collective bargaining stuff). Both his parents were unionized public employees, and his brother was a private-sector unionized employee. How it is that he's now walking around spouting off nonsense about how union employees and public workers are the scourge of the country is beyond any of us. Propaganda is an amazing thing.

I'm no fan of the Trump, but this article really doesn't say much of anything about his charitable giving, other than a small amount has gone to his private foundation. We don't (and won't) know what he gave, if anything, directly to other charitable entities.
Foundations are established for a variety of reasons. Private foundations pay a 2% excise tax to the IRS annually, plus required distributions to operating organizations (those that actually "do" something).
None of this would preclude possum-head (or whatever the hell that thing is) from simply writing a check to another charity. Higher percent of AGI plus no excise tax are pretty good reasons for the ultra wealthy to donate directly (which would not be reflected on his foundation's 990).
This article is just fluff and hot air intended to piss off folks who don't work in finance/tax related jobs.

A classy American dream filled with respectable class. From the classy choices to the classy outcomes, you can not deny that this man is pure 24 karat class in an ocean of platinum class that ebbs and flows from a gigantic (and classy) diamond moon in a universe of visible class but mostly dark-class (which is even more classy than regular class).

Why is "start a foundation" on the accountant checklist for rich clients? I'm not even talking about the famous ones who do it for PR.
Because then you can start buying things and "donating" them to the foundation.
I know several wealthy people who are collectors. They all have a "museum" that is "officially" the owner of their collections. When they buy something they fancy, they donate it to their "museum" and get a tax deduction.
Of course they are in control of that "museum" and will later sell the item and keep the money if they want. The IRS doesn't really do much enforcing with 501(c)3 corporations.
A private "foundation" is also a good way to give an appearance of being generous, yet still retain control of the money. Oh, did I mention the "donations" are tax deductible? Your foundation can then pay for all sorts of stuff for you claiming it as a legitimate expense.
I know a guy who "gives millions" away to charity (so he says), turns out most every penny goes to a foundation he started that he benefits from in some way. Example: foundations that benefit the local police. He can get away with almost anything now a days because of the amount of money he has thrown at the police. Via his foundations of course.

Only if you define "successful" as having the ability to take a $650 million inherited fortune, and losing half of it since the inheritance while still remaining one of the wealthiest people in the country. Donald Trump and the word "class" do not every belong in the same conversational context. He defines the term, "white trash with money".
If he actually had to work for a living, he'd be qualified to sell shoes at Wal-Mart.

I know what you mean. It was literally just days after Christmas and some FB friends who are way on the right-wing side (TP level derpishness) were spouting some hate mongering stuff about not helping the needy and those without health insurance. Just days after Christmas. They're also very christian-y religious too. So I asked them to offer some Christian charity. Nope, wouldn't be prudent, apparently.

I used to work for this guy who belonged to some Christian church that preached that the Earth was Satan's realm and poor people deserved to be exploited because they were poor. He was absolutely nuts about Donald Trump. He quoted Trump's books chapter and verse. I'm damn sure he knew those books better than he knew his Bible.
One of the reasons I stopped working for him was because he discovered that this woman at the corner convenience store was Jewish and he felt it was his duty as a Christian to harass her whenever possible.

Charitable foundation.
(noun)
The place where rich families send their half-wit scions or mistresses to work out their lives in a cushy sinecure.
Meanwhile, not a single effective thing is done for the poor, sick or needy by these modern day convents.

Doesn't Warren "I care about poor people, really I do" Buffet do the same basic thing? Like, he socks away a big chunk of his contributions to his kids' charities, and then sends a bunch to Bill and Melinda under the stipulation that his contributions will cease the MOMENT he can no longer write it off.
