That would deter me. It also brings a whole new meaning to the phase "tripping balls"

Safety is the yard stick of civilization; or is that soap?

Sounds like a cool extreme sport.

And kids are sticking their fingers in electrical sockets...so the only solution is to add more exposed wires!!!

Diogenes: Sounds like a cool extreme sport.

Yeah I'm pretty sure the people who are riding on the roofs of trains will just take this as a challenge.

so, instead of possible death or serious injury, the government is going for GUARANTEED death or injury.

awesome.

It has nothing to do with safety. They want people to buy a ticket. The folks on the roof don't buy one.

Hey, sometimes a dirty solution is needed. You can tell these people all you want "hey, riding on the top of a farking train is farking dangerous. A million things COULD happen to you. You could fall, the train could derail"

Now, something WILL happen, and they know it.

Teknowaffle: Now, something WILL happen, and they know it.

I feel certain that enterprising young men will find ways to circumvent this, even to the extent of riding beneath the trains.

This is some interesting version of safety that I was not previously aware of.

That or bring cricket bats and whack them out of the way. Sucks for the guys a car behind when the ball comes back down.

The first thing that came to mind was a Wiley Coyote cartoon. I'm so going to hell.

Somebody in Jakarta shares my approach to public policy. Next step: use spiked balls, install cameras. Instant top-rated television show to sell ads on. Bingo bango bongo. The public is policied.

Why not just put poison tipped, electrified spikes on the roofs?

2012-01-17 02:08:18 PM
In no way is this not as awesome as all get-out.

2012-01-17 02:12:16 PM
Well, that's one way to boost helmet sales.

2012-01-17 02:32:39 PM
So they are using giant concrete balls to stop people with giant brass balls?

no ironic tag?

It would be better if they were spinning on the pole and flailing like a minesweeper.

2012-01-17 03:12:03 PM
They should replace the metal balls with feathers that will tickle people on the roof until they fall off. Sure, they'll still die....but they'll die laughing.

2012-01-17 03:14:43 PM
So there will be balls swinging right before it enters the tunnel.

2012-01-17 03:18:13 PM
They're missing a great money making opportunity.

Rent spaces along the tracks and give out paintball guns.

Ahhh took me forever to find a pic of him on the train (couldn't remember his character's name)!!! You beat me to it, well played.

2012-01-17 05:36:54 PM
Considering the inside of the train is also completely stuffed, this isn't a ticket-buying problem or a safety problem, it's a capacity problem.

The trains look packed.

Perhaps they could add cars so people could get a seat?

Sorry for the crazy-talk.

This is an abhorrent choice to deal with the issue.

How can they in good conscience overlook using tightly strung piano wire?

I only hope the Indonesian government does the right thing and mounts huge speakers on the train that blare The Benny Hill Song. It would really improved the Youtube videos.

Sounds like Indonesia is taking the first steps towards being a platformer video game-based society. Sidewalks and roads will be littered with traps. Vicious animals will be loosed throughout the streets for no discernible reason. Banks will no longer keep assets in vaults, but instead in maze-like dungeons that are open to the public.

I approve of this.

Hey, they tried making posters, and they tried asking nicely.

I think the concrete head smashing balls will be more persuasive.

2012-01-17 05:43:31 PM
They should vary it up. At one spot it could be these balls... a little further down - snakes in boxes .. further down .. guys with long sticks .. then maybe sticks with some shiat smeared at the end of it .. etc.

2012-01-17 05:43:33 PM
As great as this is, they really needed someone with more imagination. I could envision sets of staggered hanging columns and crossbars of various heights, forcing the roof-riders to alternately dodge, jump and duck as though they were in a cheap side-scrolling game. The difficulty level would steadily progress to rotating saw blades on moving arms, dispensers dropping bouncing grenades, randomly sequenced electric fields and so on. Anyone remaining at the end of the run gets a train pass.

2012-01-17 05:44:02 PM
If they went to all that trouble erecting people scrapers, I hope they put up a lot of cameras to capture some wacky awesome video.

2012-01-17 05:44:17 PM
Reminds me of the joke about the guy who wrapped barbed wire around the banister to keep his grandma from sliding down the stairs all the time.

"Did it stop her?"

"Nope. But it sure slowed her down."
