penalized for travelling?

Even the jet is disgusted with Ben Gordon's contract.

huh, did they finally retire Roundball 1? they were the first team to have a private team jet after the back-to-back titles in the early 90's.

They were still using it just a few years ago.

Probably the first time a plane carried a basketball team full of white people since the 1950s

Of course it was a Charter jet sending out a distress call. If it were a Comcast jet, it wouldn't have been able to do even that.

That is Roundball 1. Note the logos on the engines. It's an old MD-83 jet that the Pistons bought off Spirit back in 2006 or so.

Technically this one is RB3, but they call it RB1. Kind of like whatever the President on is Air Force 1.

hmm, ok. thought they were still using the dc9 (as of 2007 they still were). Plus, it wouldn't be a 'charter flight' if it was their own jet if I follow the terminology correctly. Unless they suddenly no longer own the jet and share it with other uses outside of the pistons franchise.

The DC-9 is still in use, but not big enough to carry the entire team now. As for the use of the words "charter flight", it's the media. They fark up stuff like that.

This is why I don't fly. O_O

When ever I hit turbulence I always calm myself down by thinking "Sports teams fly all the time, hockey and basketball do it through the winter to places like Minnesota and Denver, this will be fine", but the KHL story put and end to that thought relaxing me.

/still safer than any other mode of transportation

Well that sucks. I flew into that airport last night too. I was this close to meeting NBA superstar ... uh ... ummm ... Tayshaun Prince?

Landed safely? Damn, maybe next time, Detroit.

Why do they divert the plane when there's a problem with the landing gear?

Now they're stuck in the wrong city with a bad plane.

They had to land anyway, why not go to their destination and deal with it there? Its not like the landing gear would cause the plane to fall out of the sky.

Wanna guess how I know you didn't pay attention to the 3rd paragraph?

An Olympic gold medalist and class act. You would have been lucky. Also, possibly Joe Dumars? Maybe he doesn't travel with them, though.

They came in that thing? They're braver than I thought.

I realize this is Fark and people make jokes about this kind of stuff but we should just be thankful the plane didn't crash or blow up and stop with the jokes

we just had a whole KHL team get wiped out because of an airplane disaster and that wasn't funny

They didn't actually buy it, Spirit owns and operates it as the official airline of the Pistons. Even worse than just being owned and operated by Spirit, this POS wasn't even built by McDonnell Douglas. It was built by Shanghai Aviation Industrial Corporation in the late 80's after MD realized that they couldn't keep building 20 variants of the DC-9 so they sold the plans for everything except MD-11 to the Chinese. Even scarier, the Chinese are building a newer version of it. Note the excellent quality control and safety test data. (new window)

Spirit owns whatnow? I thought the Pistons (or rather Roundball LLC) owned the plane outright. Maybe just a technicality. Here's the flight track/plane info

And for what it's worth, here's the Red Wings plane: Red Wings plane (new window)

I know. I actually like T. Prince and the Pistons a lot. I'm just trying to fit in around here by being an asshole.

Sucks how the Pistons fell off so drastically. Of course, I'm a Rockets fan so I can sympathize.
