And later this year America will go to the polls and re-elect the vast majority of them because they hate the other side so goddamned much and nothing will change.

Done in two. This is why congress is broken, and why the HoR will not change for the better anytime soon.

"Congress" refers to both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Republicans will point to this generic dissatisfaction as a reason to flip the Senate to R control, to change it for the "better", too.

They're like a big corporation acting on behalf of the people.

Everybody hates them collectively but no one individual is reviled enough to be forced to take personal responsibility for any heinous act or measure or vote.
There's literally no person accountable for their actions.
Congress is like a huge organized crime gang with the best protection in the world.

It's the perfect arrangement if you're a craven hell-bound thief in a $2,000 dollar suit.

Ok, but it's not like I can do anything to get rid of most senators or congressman.

I have two races in November, one for Congress and one for Senate.

I can't do anything about Michelle Bachman or Steve King. I can just help get rid of Scott Brown.

Nah. What you actually see is that it costs an ass-ton of money to run an election campaign and the only way to do that if you're not already obscenely wealthy is to buddy up with the obscenely wealthy and largest corporations.

We should have a national sacrificial congressman an senator. Every election season, you get to vote for one of the 538 to murder on live TV. Preferably, you lop their heads, but firing squad will do. On, and this is good even if you resign, until the end of the term you would have served, so quitting because you are unpopular won't get you out of it.

Add some risk to the job.

2012-01-17 11:30:46 AM
Oh, so it's gone up from 5% approval (give or take 3%) all the way to 16% in about a month.

Right on, good to know more people are approving after the embarrassment that was last month.

Link (9% slightly more popular than herpes!)

Link (here it is at 5%, with a bonus 86% stat!)

Republicans are the problem. As usual.

The Republican party, and conservatives in general, are a curse on this country. The US simply can't keep electing these evil, shortsighted, moronic farks if we expect to hold together as a country.

2012-01-17 11:34:49 AM
Our representatives spend all their time trying to make us hate all the other representatives so that we're distracted while they pass legislation which would otherwise make us hate them. Some portion falls for it, and hates the people they're told to hate, while the rest recognize the crap Congress does, and hate them for it. Playing the sides against each other has turned out to be a wildly successful strategy for controlling the public, allowing Congress to pass more crap we hate, making us hate them more, and thus the cycle continues, and disapproval rises as we continue to do nothing about it.

I hate my local congressman. But I'm well aware he will win in a landslide. As will my Senators.

Voting "not Democrat" in Los Angeles doesn't really get me anywhere, I really think every state should have the "neither" option that some do.

2012-01-17 11:37:34 AM
Though I don't know about everyone else, my own state is pretty much locked by one party(R.) So I propose we have a diplomatic exchange where we exchange politicians from different countries that are roughly analogous just to see what happens. I will trade my republican reps for whatever passes as republican in south korea. They will need a translator and their maybe some serious social adjustments to be made but all in all its not like south korean republicans are going to be worse.

come on, let's start trading and see what happens.

I didn't state that very well. I know Congress includes both the HoR and the Senate. The point remains. Most people approve of their rep. Most people disapprove of the HoR. I approve of Tammy Baldwin and intend to vote for her again, but I'm quite disgusted with the HoR. There's nothing I can do about it. Last election a teapublican challenged her, and that was all that was on the ballot for that race. If I write in a candidate that makes it more likely a teabagger will end up taking her spot. Then I'd be disgusted not only with the HoR, but also my rep for adding to the latest "I'm more conservative than everyone else and that means everyone else is a libby leftist liberal socialist" movement.

Not for me.

I might vote for my Rep, Mike Michaud, but there's way Snowe or Collins are getting any votes from me.

Michaud's done quite a few things I agree with, including voting against NDAA.

However, if Snowe or Collins get removed, I'll eat my hat.

I think a lot of this could be fixed if we replaced first-past-the-post voting with the alternative voting system, and controlled gerrymandering.

The real way to change things is to make the seemingly dry subject of "redistrciting reform" your personal poltical crusade.Gerrymandering congressional districts to create "Safe" seats has contributed to the radicalization and polarization of American politics. The more Congressmen who have a real fear of getting thrown out when they act like hyper-partisan asshats, the more we will see this country return to the middle poltically and practice the art of compromise, instead of lurching from pole to pole as we do now.

Ahhh, the little known, appendix subsection amendment concerning the silent super majority. I believe if we can get this percentage of the population to vote on a general question regarding the employment of our representatives then there must be complete turnover of all elected, and appointed dept and cabinet heads.

No, really. If our founding fathers were serious about revolution they would have made it easier.

I don't remember hearing that she was going to be primaried by teabaggers. Though I do find it funny that she's considered a RINO yet she's lockstep with the GOP most of the time.

At anyrate, that could be interesting if they did that. It could split the vote and put a democrat in her office, or split the vote and put the bagger in office in a similar manner to how we got stuck with LePage. Or her base will remain strong and she'll win again anyways.
