If it was brought down by radiowaves, it wasn't going to make it to Mars. Sorry fellas.

The spacecrafts name was "Fobos-Grunt", which literally translates as "Phobos Ground".

I wasn't excluding the United States from that analysis. The Iraq War was an incredible re-election strategy. "You can't change horses midstream!!!"

Translation on that page is so bad it is hard for an English-speaking reader to tell what they're saying.

BUT, my respect for Pravda specifically and Russian folks generally went up (another) notch when I clicked on the 'Era of Concorde' link on that page. Quite a bit more technical detail than you'll find in any dumbed-down US media... stuff like Concorde's top speed being set by the choice of airframe material, and the wing's CP shifting when supersonic so they shifted fuel (CG) to compensate rather than suffering the drag of trim tabs.

Uh guys, Pravada isn't exactly know for telling the truth all the time. Most of their stories in the post-Soviet era have been about aliens and shiat.

Maybe he means he thinks the US has a radar trace of it coming down? He's an idiot if he thinks some radar disabled the vehicle.

You know what is really sad? To anyone with a fully functioning brain he was lying when he presented his "evidence", but back in 02 or 03 if you expressed that Colin Powell and the Bush administration were liars, well you were a racists and an anti-American pussy.

If it's the Americans' fault, then no one in Russia can/should be held responsible for the failure. A report like this is CYA all the way. It has nothing to do with reality, it's who gets shot for the failure.

Its all data you can get from Wikipedia or any documentary on the Concorde that's been on TV in the last 25 years.

Translated document poor way could not you misunderstand meaning.

I dunno. First off, IIRC, command signals are usually coded so that accidents DONT happen, however, it's possible I suppose, that an adjacent channel signal could be strong enough to prevent the probe from hearing it's command signals at all. [Technically this is called 'de-sense']

I would think however, that the actual control would by by the onboard computer and the ground to orbit signal would simply set the time and duration of burn and could be sent at some convenient time in advance, rather than being a real-time signal.

And no, HAARP did not have anything to do with this - HF is not used to communicate to satellites.

It isn't, its a silly idea. To get to Mars you have to endure cosmic radiation on a scale that Curiousity is happily measuring right this moment. So as cgraves67 mentioned, if it couldn't handle a few radiowaves it wasn't going to survive the trip to mars.

Better headline: Idiot scientists launch probe vulnerable to standard radar, much less months of exposure to deep space radiation.

It's from "The Hunt for the Red October". In this scene the character in the foreground (played by Fred Thompson) says a line you probably recognize: "This business will get out of control. It will get out of control and we'll be lucky to live through it."
