Boy, The Consumerist sure bags on Best Buy a lot... I have no real problems with them. Of course, I don't deal with the Geek Squad and wouldn't buy a computer there either, so I won't get suckered into the 'protection' racket they like to run, but I think their prices are far more competitive than they used to be.

Yeah, I can buy online, but that means that I have to take chances that things won't work the way I want(Universal phone dock for the car), that the great price I get will be eliminated by shipping, or that I will have to wait for it to arrive, and maybe get thrown at my door by UPS. Sometimes I want a brick and mortar store, and I don't want to go to WalMart whenever I can help it because of their "selection"(Actually the lack of one), their lack of quality, and their general business practices. Target? Same thing on selection, and their prices are higher. Costco? They have nice electronics, but it almost all starts in the more expensive range. Fry's Electronics? Yeah, none here, and besides, although they have great prices and probably the BEST selection, they have the absolutely shiattiest customer service in the history of mankind... This leaves Best Buy, since Circuit City went the way of the dodo... Despite what the 'tech gurus' tell you on those little news segments, people STILL want to buy stuff in a physical store sometimes and take it home right there.

I just don't get the hate 'The Consumerist' has for Best Buy, between them and Sears, there are almost no other stories on their site, is it just their way of staying online?

There not, though. The same dvd I could get for about $15 at Wal-Mart costs at least $29.99 at Best Buy. (A season of Buffy, for what it's worth.)

Keep in mind that it's documented that WalMart negotiates deals with manufacturers to get lower quality(Therefore lower cost) versions of the same products they sell elsewhere. Probably not the same with DVD's, since a DVD is a DVD, but it's been shown to happen. I've seen it first hand. Also, you can't really be "competitive" with WalMart, that's their tactic, they bleed every possible competitor dry. Unfortunately, I see no rhyme nor reason to DVD prices, when buying Sex and The City for my wife years ago, I would see season 1 cheaper at one place, season 2 cheaper at another, and the one with a cheaper season 2 would have a more expensive season one... Crazy times we live in...

As for price comparison, I just looked at the same TV at both places(Same model # at least), and there was a $9 difference. LG 32" TV $330 at WalMart and $339 @ Best Buy. Not too horrible.

Fair enough...but, keeping with my example, I've seen the same price at Target. Same with most of Target's dvds and Blu-Rays.

I have to say, although I think Target's prices are high as Hell, their DVD's are pretty well priced. Some very good deals there, even better than the WalMart $5 bin. Target has some smokin' deals on actual new stuff you want to watch...

Tom_Slick: I shop Best Buy on occasion when I don't want to drive the 20 miles to Brandsmart USA or Fry's, and one thing I have noticed is that they have gone with very low light in their stores. I know the TV section is dark pretty mush everywhere (Except Brandsmart USA which looks like a Flea Market inside) but Best Buy is dark through out the store so dark in fact I have trouble reading the boxes. I guess it is supposed to feel more upscale but damn it I would like to read what I am looking to buy.

I wonder if that's some decision by a regional manager? I've never been in a Best Buy that was horribly dark, not WalMart bright, but plenty bright, that sounds like a decision by someone with too much power and not enough sense...

So how is the Fry's where you are in regards to customer service? The ones in Phoenix are absolute HELL... You look forever for what you want(Because they have so much, it's hard to nail down the one item you want), and NOBODY helps you at all. Ever. I think it's because they all work on commission. My brother in law worked at the one in Tempe, Az, and even though he was a cashier, he had to work on commission although he had no control over any aspect of the sale except collecting the money.
