FTFA:
Sky on fire, Austin, Texas

iReporter Archi Agarwal took this photo while walking to his office parking lot in Dallas Texas.

It's an easy mistake to make, really. Texas is such a tiny state, and the two cities are practically overlapping each other. It isn't called the Austin-Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex for nothing.

cuzsis: So, apparently red tide glows neon blue/green.

Well, a couple things - the color varies, but it's more commonly red hued - purple, pink and red. However, it can colored from blue to green hues.

It's called red tide more precisely because of the toxins released by the overblooming of the algae. Bird, fish and sea life dies from it or if they don't, they are contaminated with the toxins. Humans could die from eating some of the seafood that was harvested during or shortly after red tide. The neurotoxins released by the algae are very harmful.

Wow the most unimpressive pictures I have seen today. The boat picture is just horrible, colors are just blah. The shot of the parking lot at dusk is not impressive at all I don't understand why that's even listed in the group the tops of all the cars look like bad photoshops. The dusk over water shot has horrible color. 3 of the 8 pictures are just plain bad congrats your phone's camera sucks.

The first one was nice. I've taken some pretty photos with my iPhone, but nothing that deserves a CNN article. That's why I have Facebook, so the people who might be interested in my recent trip to Germany can see what I saw. Also, the parking lot? Wow.

Yeah, that camera will do fine until you want to compose with depth-of-field, take a picture without flash in a dim light situation, or any other slightly complicated situation.

I have a point and click for most things, but I take the dslr when I want something worth printing at full size and framing.

There were a few nice shots in there, but nothing great. I mean, if you compose correctly and you can guess what your metering is, you can take a great shot with your iPhone. I liked the snapshot of a sunset in Nantucket I took with my iPhone better than the one I took with my 5D Mk II, but that doesn't mean I am tossing away $7,000 worth of equipment.

This, that, and other similar cliches. I love my iPhone for snapping and uploading pics, but if I shot with it at friends' weddings I wouldn't get the crazy good feedback I do now.

Those photos can be criticized at multiple levels.

First, they are technically terrible. Saturation levels and color balance are completely screwed-up. Maybe Apple thinks that people like pictures that 'pop', but the inaccuracies are just terrible. Also, I don't know whether to blame the iPhone or something done in post-processing, but those are examples of terrible JPEG compression algorithms.

Second, the composition is too snapshoty and the focus is flat on all of them. I saw some motion blur (not intentional) in several photos. No leading lines. The rule of thirds is pretty much ignored.

No, those are just 'interesting' snapshots because the content is unusual.

It isn't even trying to make a value judgment about the gear.

puckrock2000: And we've just discovered iReporter James Brunson's FARK account.

I just don't like critics that don't offer constructive criticism, just destructive. They're more than useless.

Here, I'll criticize in a more useful way:

Image #2 shot could be more effective if the shot was a little bit higher where the cars are cropped out and there is more color play with more sky to see.

Image #4 - The moon is detracting from the shot and if it was blocked out, the bio luminance could be more effectively captured since there is a more contrast to the lighting. The moon washes out the entire picture.

Image #7 - If the shot was a bit lower, you could get a better conformity with the rooftops and snow in a more aligned plane of perspective. However, I think this shot is doomed anyways due to the fact that the sky is more gray, which doesn't help on the color punch.

Deconstructive criticism

I'm sorry I don't feel the need to go in depth on why each of those shots are pure garbage, if you can't look at them and tell that they have issues then that's not my problem. The 3 shots that I pointed out to have obvious flaws that should never be posted on CNN as good photos plain and simple.

For the love of god not everyone needs to make a paragraph about why a picture is bad if it's clear as day that they are bad.

I don't own an Iphone, I do own a DSLR yet I can fully admit that Iphone's can take stunning pictures. Whoever chose the pictures for this article just chose badly. I agree with everyone saying that they are very much unremarkable (and some are just plain crap).

I've seen decent Iphone snaps taken on photography sites and some of them have blown me away.

Everyone who's been to Prague will have that exact same shot since it's taken from the park right next to the Presidential palace - a stop on most tours. The snow on the tiled roofs may be unusual for most North-Americans, but there's nothing particular about that picture.

Those are, in my slightly biased opinion, at least as "stunning" as the two sunset pictures they posted. Can I be on CNN now or do I not count since I don't worship at the altar of apple?

See CrispFlows how his pictures of sunest do not have that ugly color saturation that those stunning, amazing, and unbelieveable iphone pictures have. Tell me again why you need a long description on why that picture is sub par compared to the other, I'll wait as you get job's decaying balls out of your mouth so you can speak.

iReporter Marcela took this in February 2010 as she stood next to Prague Castle in Prague, Czech Republic. She says, "We were vacationing and definitely recommend visiting during winter time because it's less crowded and the snow makes the city look a million times more beautiful."

It's mid-January right now... I would not recommend anyone visiting here until April or May. Most of the smaller castles are closed in the winter, plus you're missing the whole beer garden experience. Christmas can be nice, but cold. New Years is a farking mess.

2. Pick a couple that are in focus
3. Crank up the color saturation

The Duomo is a fantastic cathedral, but I have better pics of it from when I visited Milan (though sadly, not on this PC). Really, it was most stunning emerging from the subway and having this huge cathedral literally right in front of you. Spectacular.
