Should have kept up with the bacchanals!

Or did the bacchanals cause this?

//Tourism and tax evasion and phony accounting do not make a robust economy

So, why doesn't the government of Greece do what they do in America? Why doesn't the Greek government bet for the failure of it's own money on the world market? In turn, they can make enough money to pay off its own debts through derivatives, etc.

I am not sure how it is even legal for people to make money off their own failure, but this method has produced several millionaires that should not have been. Maybe it can work for Greece too. I know its quite a bit late in the game for Greece to hop onboard, but if the banks want their money, I am sure they could make a few concessions and get them fully up to speed.

That would only serve to feed the pyramid scheme we call an economy, and solve nothing.

... is this the first article you've ever read on the subject? I don't think any part of your post even comes within shouting-distance of reality.

The Greeks should send a commando unit to Paris and Berlin to repatriate their stolen antiquities.

/if only for the lulz

If there's only one good thing that comes out of this -- using traditional Greek mythology memes as a guide -- there will probably be some awesome semi-immortal hero born soon, as this can only be due to Zeus farking around with mortals again.

/Poor beautiful maiden will then suffer the wrath of an angry Hera as a result, though.

Why are the rating agencies still alive and not afraid of their lives?

SoCalSurfer: No taxes and tons of entitlements is no way to run a country

A system with no entitlements and (almost) no taxes can be sustained. On the other hand, a welfare state (like the one we currently have in the U.S.) cannot be sustained, even with high taxes.

Unsound economic practice started this mess. The ratings agencies are only the "bearers of the bad news".

Sweet...a couple responded to my post. Sometimes the only ideas are bad ideas. Seriously, if there were an easy way out...they would have already done it. To suggest that people do not profit off of failure means that Elvis has left the building.

Hitmen are also messengers.

Even the most unsound economic practices can't justify the S&P's political downgrades.

Now here is a solution to balance of payments problems.
Find out what foreign countries have your money, and demand it is returned for free :)

???
Greece is the antithesis of "austerity". They've been spending (borrowed) money like a drunken sailor for decades.
