Just wait until the elections future markets open. It will basically replace polling. And it will be as succeptible to manipulation as other markets (such as the commodities and stock market) are.

So the big money people can, for example, drive up the price of Mitt Romney to 80% and this is what the media will report on, not the polling. Then people will think, "oh, Mitt Romney has an 80% chance of winning" and everyone will vote for him, the same way they use polling now.

Propaganda and vote rigging perfected.

Negative ads work. And they're expensive.

I'm glad the Republicans are doing their best to destroy each other before they even get into the general election. And spending a great deal of money to do so.

That's the silver lining of this cloud currently raining sh*t down on everybody.

I heard a Gingrich ad on the radio today. In Illinois. A state where the primary is held so late in the primary season that nobody ever bothers to vote in them. A state that voted 62% for Obama in '08 and 60% for Gore in '04.

Interesting to see Mitt and Newt go back and forth on their superPAC ads at the debate last night.

"You know I don't and cannot legally have any involvement with that superPAC. I'm simply powerless! I sure do hope they stop running false ads though!"

It's like a public game of "I'm not touching youuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu".

Step 1: Legalize the purchase of votes from voters.
Step 2: Go all the way: make it obligatory.
Step 3: Set up an electronic vote marketplace/auctionhouse where each voter can negotiate the price of his vote with each prospective candidate.
Step 4: Allow unlimited direct corporate donations to candidates.
Step 5: Full disclosure of corporate donations to candidates. Make them wear logos.

Advantages: Improved voter turnout. Economic stimulus every election year. Honesty and transparency. Redistribution of wealth. Elimination of corruption through legalization and regulation.

While I certainly think our campaign finance system is completely broken, I'd only consider votes being 'bought' if the people casting the vote actually got money for voting that way.

what we need is Citizens United against PACs ... maybe an Act of Bipartisan Reform. Maybe a commission with both parties represented like Brown, McCain, Feingold, McCaskill and such. It could even be a critical film starring Hillary Clinton.

If current projections hold, in twenty years, we will be spending 100% of our nation's GDP on election campaigns. Soon after that, we will begin borrowing tons of money from China and Europe to provide even more funds for our elections. This is exactly what the Founding Fathers wanted us to do.

So when do we collectively grow the balls to start actually fighting back against this? And I don't mean figurative "fighting" like going to court only to be smacked down by bought-off judges, or "Occupying" public parks only to get beaten and pepper sprayed by the investment banks hired goons police -- I mean really fighting, with barricades and molotovs and the whole deal, breaking en masse into gated communities in Westchester, pulling the Patrick Bateman douchebags out of their Maseratis and ripping them apart like a scene from a zombie movie?

It all comes down to the price of bread, I suppose...

What a waste of money, Obama and Romney are both being supported by the major financial institutions that just got bailed out. Thats who their major contributors are.

They are on the same team! But from a public relations standpoint it is Obama that can implement pro status quo policies with minimal public hoopla.

This is just a theater of good cop, bad cop. Both are draconian corporate water boyz. You are being conditioned. You are not choosing between the lesser of two evils here people, you are psychologically being conditioned to accept evil.

Of course you can buy votes. There's a reason liberals are having an absolute fit over Scott Walker and it has nothing to do with the reasons they're giving in public.

The Dims have brought vote pilfering to the 21st century.....with all their tricks and misdirection, I am surprised that if they ever lose an election.

In the late 19th century entire armies of thugs were recruited from Manhattan's gangs to take control of polling places, oust any opposition, and assure that only Row A votes were counted.

1850s, elections were controlled by the Locofocos. In alliance with a group of Southern Democrats called the Chivs, the Locofocos ruled central California until borax king William T. Coleman reorganized the San Francisco Vigilantes in 1856 and ran them off.

In 1936, Harry Hopkins ordered employees of his vast Works Progress Administration (WPA) empire to vote for FDR. Ballots were closely monitored, and anyone voting for poor Alf Landon was summarily fired.

In the Kennedy-Nixon contest, Kennedy won by scarcely 100,000 votes, was stolen by a combination of zombie voters from Chicago and Texas votes from the eighth dimension, arranged by VP candidate Lyndon Johnson. LBJ, known as "Landslide Lyndon" for exactly this reason, had been involved in gimmicking elections since the '30s, and he always had a few votes on his person in case of emergencies.

We also have the Franken....Christine Gregoire, the Philly Panthers and the Houston voting-machine warehouse fire.

Then - the cherry on the cake was Al Gore's attempt to snag the presidency through legal double-talk in 2000.

Someone tried this once, and because all the power broker middle men didn't get their slice of the pie, they filed injuctions to shut it down. That, and technically it was illegal at the time.

Vote Auction (new window)

Because the wiki article sucks, here is a brief synopsis of the website's proposed system:

1. Registered voters pledged to sell their vote to the highest bidder, and gave their state.
2. Buyers would bid auction style on blocks of votes by state.
3. The auction would close the day before election day, and the winner would name the designated candidate.
4. Voters would vote for the name provided and evenly split the proceeds of the auction.

I honestly dom't remember if they proposed for all sellers/buyers to be fully documented or anonymous. Yes, I know it was designed as a social commentary on the electoral process rather than something literal, but I would prefer that to this current clusterfark of SuperPACs.

Google news search for the line. It hits the weak area of voting. Messenger ballots.

Had a problem with that here in NJ. Newark, which has 110,000 more registered voters than Atlantic City released 23 messenger ballots for the 2009 primary. Atlantic City released 542.

karnal: Then - the cherry on the cake was Al Gore's attempt to snag the presidency through legal double-talk in 2000.

Gore's only mistake in Florida was taking too long to ask for a full state recount. Probably wouldn't have changed things, but it would have looked less douche than to ask the supremes to force a state to ignore it's own recount cutoff dates.

If Gore had done that properly it probably would have been too late for Bush to ask for a recount in New Mexico, and either would have had to eat it or do the the douche thing and take New Mexico to the supremes.

Of course the new thing will be to throw in spoilers. Republicans would be happy to see Colbert run as an independent on a national level. A few percent of Colbert fans is all they'll need to win in a few key states. It's also why they don't want Ron Paul going freestyle since he'd draw 5-8% in many states.

Wrong, dipshiat. I said let the four in New York pay for their crimes. You, on the other hand, are using one isolated case of four idiots trying to rig a city council election as irrefutable proof that the entirety of voter fraud is a liberal problem, when there are numerous cases of Republicans trying to systematically eliminate voting rights.

What is true? That both sides are bad? Or that "Republicans are systematically trying to rig the vote in this country through their wholly unnecessary laws?"
Would this be the same as when democrats wanted to play politics and change rules to favor them in Massachusetts over Ted Kennedy's "seat"? They changed the rules twice in that state in an attempt to benefit the Democrats.
