Something something religion something something Tebow sucks something something predetermined thugball.
There, I saved you all the trouble of participating in yet another of an endless series of Tebow threads that the modmins are trolling us with, all of which end up the same way no matter what twist you put on it.

Over Christmas, a friend and I were reminiscing at the bar about how in 8th grade we were attacked by parents of a rival middle school team following our win. They freaking chased us out of the locker room. I remember some 40ish year old man beating on the bus with an axe handle.
People get way too silly about school sports, or maybe it's just people in rural Indiana get way too silly about basketball.

No, people get way too worked up over sports

Have you watched ESPN the last couple of days? On Sunday they did a Tebow essay and yesterday they talked about him more than they did about the championship games. And now CBS wants him in their pregame show.

How do the people who believe that god was helping Tebow come to terms with the fact that he got his ass kicked in his last game.
Did god lose? Did god abandon Tebow? Did Tebow's opponents pray harder or more effectively??

I see dumb people.
In your dreams? While you're awake? Dumb people, like mentally handicapped people in special education classrooms, or psych wards?
Walking around like regular people. They don't see each other. They only see what they want to see. They don't know they're dumb.
How often do you see them?
All the time. They're everywhere.

Parents who complain about competitiveness in youth sports are typically the ones whose kids sit on the bench. I have no qualms about getting in an umpire/referees face if he makes a stupid call against my kid. Last year, during the State Championship for baseball (a huge game), the home plate umpire called a ridiculous third strike on my boy Tommy. It was so far outside that the catcher had to lunge for it. I went down there and got in the umps face about it. And then he shoved me, so I laid him out. I told everyone that the last pitch didn't count and they had to do it over. No one wanted any more trouble, so they went along. Tommy hit a triple for 2 RBIs. That was enough to win the game. If I hadn't gotten involved, then the corrupt ump would have stolen that victory from us.

I am sick and tired of the HATERS who just want to BASH Tim for his Faith! He works so much harder than everyone else in the league and he doesn't listen to rap music with the boogie woogie and the singing "grab jab babby momma, wanna stick it in ya" like all the other THUGS in the league!

I was watching the saturday game at a bar in beantown, and i heard a lot of people saying things like, "i guess jesus sat this one out, huh?" and "it turns out that knowing the playbook is even more valuable than knowing jesus" and my favorite "hey jesus, where were you on that one, dipshiat?" Oh, of course. When jesus freaks justify their worst behavior (racism, misogyny, violence, ...) using the Bible, that's "moral justification". You ask a so-called "christian" why they must mistreat gays, and they'll throw Leviticus at you. Of course, no mention of demanding bans on shellfish or "miscegenation", which are also forbidden in the same breath.
But God forbid that someone quote the Bible back at them - oh, whoa, that's "out of context"!

Mad? No. Amused? Yes.
Jesus was addressing the hypocrites who ONLY prayed in public so that others could see them in public, but in private it was back to business as usual. Unless you have some inside information that Tebow does not also pray in private, then your use of Matthew is misplaced.

I'm sorry, but that reeks of desperate justification. Matthew 6:1 says "Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven." As a matter of fact, the first 14 verses of Matthew Chapter 6 seem to be pretty specific about this issue. The take-home message from Chapter 6 in general seems to be about being secure and confident in your own salvation and righteousness, rather than evangelizing and bragging to everyone about how holy and good you are. I'm certain Tebow prays plenty in private, but it seems to me that his public prayer makes him quite the hypocrite. If ONLY Christians and other jesus freaks watched football, I'd say he's alright. But he's evangelizing and acting like a self-righteous hypocrite. He is ASKING for this attention. He could as easily take a silent moment standing with his head down or eyes closed on the sideline, and God (if there is such a thing) would hear him just fine. Instead, he strikes a distinctive pose and shouts about it to the press. That's exactly what the Christ of Matthew Chapter 6 opposed. Then again, you point out that there's a very different Jesus in Chapter 5.
It's almost as if these books were cobbled together hundreds of years after Jesus died, or maybe as if Jesus was just a normal, fallible guy who was trying his best to get people to stop being horrible to each other, while having some delusions of grandeur.
