I've never even held a gun before and hopefully that will remain true for as long as I live. Thankfully I live in a safe neighbourhood, so I've never felt the need for one. I think people should have every right to own one and defend themselves or their loved ones, they just aren't for me.
For now my vacuum cleaner bar will have to do the job.

What about a baseball bat?
I used to have a baseball bat for that purpose but it was A) Too heavy (I don't exactly have a lot of upper body strength) and B) Too long. There are quite a few places in my house where swinging a bat would strike either a wall or a doorframe or some other obstruction.
The metal pipe from my vacuum is ideal: it's hollow, so it's light. It's shorter than a bat and it's still hard enough to cause some damage.

I feel the same way. I'm pretty liberal and will probably never own a gun but I have no desire to ban them. Liberals need to shed their own fear-based politics.

Meh, you have to try to be at least mildly logical or I doubt you'll catch anyone. Like, there has to be underlying logic of some kind for people to want to point out the flaws in it.

Note the state subby. In Florida, recent changes in the law mean that "He was looking at me kinda ornrey-like" is now classifed as as a justifiable reason to shoot someone

I am pretty liberal, and I have a lot of liberal friends, but I don't think any of us are for banning guns. While I know there are folks out there who would like a general gun ban, I think the idea that "liberals want to take away your guns" isn't so much a truth as a great sales tactic.

I need another safe for my guns... That being said, my wife has begrudgingly learned how to safely handle them. So she keeps an aluminum tee-ball bat next to the bed and a 12oz ball peen hammer in her nightstand. I think the hammer would be more effective than the bat in most parts of our house but she went with the little bat so she'd be able to swing it better.

My girlfriend and I had this conversation the other day.
"Why would you have a gun for self defense, why not get a baseball bat?"
"A baseball bat is good, but a gun is better"
"Why?"
"Let's imagine three scenarios. Bare hands, bat, gun. If I surprise a burglar with my bare hands, if he has anything more than his bare hands he'll beat me to death, stab me or shoot me. If I go down there with a baseball bat, he'll shoot me with his gun. If I go down there with a gun, unless he's Jackie Chan he's in trouble."
"I just don't think it's safe to have a gun."
"Well it's easy to say that because if we wake up to the sound of breaking glass at 4am you'll be hiding under the bed while and telling me to go see what that noise was."

My favorite is when, every so often, someone denounces guns as barbaric but describes how stately and civilized swords are. Because Obi-Wan told them or something. Guns should be banned, this wise purveyor of romanticized anime proclaims, while swords should be handed to every citizen (presumably bestowed upon by the lady of the lake).
I have a hard time believing that these people who espouse the noble cause of the sword would be able to turn their power up over 9000 to effectively use the device. Instead, these out of shape internet ninjas would leave themselves open to being carved up like a pig. Ironically, a gun would be infinitely useful for them in a self defense situation.
