"Money equals speech," Colbert told ABC's George Stephanopoulos Sunday. "Therefore the more money you have, the more you can speak. That just stands to reason."

Nice.

If I could get there and if I were thereafter allowed to vote in that primary, I would.

Somehow in that interview he barely shows a smile, yet on the Colbert Report show, he occasionally can't finish a joke because he's laughing too hard.

But he does a way better job at keeping a poker face than Jon Stewart, IMO.

So what percentage of votes does Cain (Colbert) get in the SC Primary?

I'm saying 15%. Certainly much more than Perry.

I Have The Touch of a Shocked Monkey: Somehow in that interview he barely shows a smile, yet on the Colbert Report show, he occasionally can't finish a joke because he's laughing too hard.

Stephen Colbert the character is a stone-faced, serious Conservative pundit.

When Stephen Colbert the comedian is reading scripted material, he tends to start cracking up and breaking character at what he reads. Lots of times, the writers are slipping material to him that he hasn't seen yet, and he's laughing at the jokes he's reading.

When Stephen Colbert the comedian is improvising (such as most of the time when he's interviewing a guest), he's skilled at staying in-character, and he's usually stone-faced.

That was an unscripted interview with Stephanopolous. Colbert was improvising.

Love the inclusion of the super slow smile at the end.

As someone who can't listen to the sound at work, am I to take it that a vote for Cain is really a vote for Colbert (since they apparantly won't count write-in's)?

2012-01-17 02:11:11 PM
So is the whole idea here that he's trying to point out the absurdity of the current rules involving PAC campaign financing? I mean, of course he is, but I mean specifically what is said by an ad's "announcer" vs. what is actually shown on screen?

Like, is the rule something like "PACs may offer no verbal or auditory support of a related candidate," but conveniently leaves out visuals?

"Mitt Romney is a serial killer" - actor who played a serial killer. Absolutely fantastic.

I'm sorry, but I've been told that any information that appears on Colbert is illegitimate because it's a humor program.

Seriously, that's what I've been told.

No the law only states they can't coordinate on what the ads say (how the PAC spends money). The PAC can support or attack any candidate they choose

The point, such as it is, is that there is literally no limit to what a SuperPAC can say, since they aren't officially tied to candidates, despite how logically absurd the "non-connection" is

I was hoping Rush would bring up Colbert today on his show to see if he would stir up his base even more about the Libru drivebyl Lamestream MSM media making a mockery of Republicans, but he hasn't made a peep about it. I think it honestly scares him.

Gen. Patton Harvey Oswalt: K, I've always liked Colbert, but always held him distinctly below Stewart in awesomeness. They're pretty much equal now. I'm in awe of the trolltasticness.

Stewart is a friendly guy that can draw interviewees out in ways they often don't seem to expect, and I think he's fairly involved in the writing of the jokes, but he's not much of an actor himself. Colbert is an iron-faced impressionist that can go for hours at a time without breaking character even slightly when he's on a roll. They're different flavors of awesome, I'd say.

Meh. There are others who tell the truth, but nobody listens because we're all idiots who demand to be entertained 24 hours a day.

As corporations have a bigger influence on our government, expect the political process to continually become more like reality television.

First you'd have to dumb it down enough to be a talking point. I'm not sure how you'd do that in this case. You can't even assume his listeners know that Colbert is an act.

The best instance of this was when he was on...Good Morning America? and they were just about to cut to commercial when the hosts started talking about twitter and asked if Stephen used twitter. He looks straight at them, says.."I have...twatted?" and then just keeps a straight face as if wondering if he said something wrong.

At work, otherwise I'd find it on youtube. I'm not your research department - find it yourself!

I wonder if there is a chinese version of colbert. How many levels of metaphor would have to be applied so as to avoid crossing the party and ending up in a prison.

2012-01-17 02:35:35 PM
That was impressive that Stewart was able to get the video out so quickly after watching Colbert's "The Word" last night. Unless they are trying to show that when staffers from a campaign are close to those of a SuperPac you can get shiat done quick. Eitherway I'm impressed, because you know there is no way they have the cashflow of Rove's superpac.

There at it again folks...making a mockery of democracy. The liberal media is so afraid one of our candidates is going to win that they are trying to subvert our primaries and turn them into a joke. Well we're not laughing...

something like that I imagine

Genius. Herman Cain will still get votes anyway because he's been in the race long enough (even though he dropped out), but Colbert might be able to swing enough votes his way to make Romney lose.

He is sowing discontent .... legally. BECAUSE OUR SYSTEM IS farkED!

I feel Colbert is doing this to show the American people that things are broken.

I've been told that as well by my mom and a younger Republican cousin. So to prove a point I pulled up various news sites, unedited clips of politicians or pundits speaking, and then would show them a clip or two from TDS or Colbert Report.

Cousin still doesn't like Stewart or Colbert, but at least my mom relented that they're both clever and sharp when it comes to exposing some of the BS. I also think she appreciates that Liberals can point out the absurdities of their own parties/candidates despite the Conservatives on her side.

FTFA "Money equals speech," Colbert told ABC's George Stephanopoulos Sunday. "Therefore the more money you have, the more you can speak. That just stands to reason."

I see nothing wrong with this. "The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread." Likewise, both rich and poor are equally allowed to buy million dollar campaign advertisements.

See? Equality.

/I too kept a straight face!

A number of people seem to feel that way. Bill Maher had Cain on Real Time last week and after a minute or so of blathering BS by Cain, Maher said something like "I don't agree with anything you just said, but I really like you."

Stewart and Colbert have a huge number of people getting engaged in politics. They deserve a lot of credit and I think their role in this is only going to get bigger and more important.
