How is babby formed?

There is an offline version (new window) though I don't know how much space it takes up. If you routinely rely on Wiki for whatever reason and can't take the jones for 24 hours, you might be interested. Also good to have for other emergencies.

2012-01-17 12:14:14 AM
Honestly, I'd like to see Google, Facebook, and Twitter join in on this. Imagine the outrage from the masses if they couldn't access any of those sites for 24hrs, but instead saw only a page saying "This could happen at any time if Congress passes these laws. Call your congress-critter and tell him or her NO!".

Of course, there would probably be a significant number of suicides and people having convulsive fits and such due to withdrawal, but consider that Natural Selection at work. ;)

Can you imagine all the angst if fark shut down for a day? People already get completely bent out of shape when the server crashes or Mike is installing something and has to take it offline for awhile.

If Google had any cojones, they's shut down their search site and YouTube.

That would not only paralyze your average human being, but it would also impact
most journalists, though the Wikipedia shutdown will have some impact.

Apparently Fark has been protesting SOPA every few weeks in the morning and didn't even know it.

Yes, Google giving a blank screen saying "No searches for you today. But we will let you Google the address and phone number of your Congressman. Call or write them to complain." could be interesting.

Or perhaps people around the world would look up from their screens and collectively remember the wonder of nature and beauty of intimate social interaction! Or then again, they would just refresh their browsers until services came back.

2012-01-17 07:15:16 AM
Google wouldn't have the courage to go dark, they would worry that people would switch to bing, now if every search provider did it, that would be something to see.

facebook would worry people would move to google+ and not come back

Also:

Imagine the outcry, then imagine congress thinking "if they can hold us to ransom, we must DO SOMETHING!"

Guys don't worry, I got this. I've already written my senators and congressman to explain why this is a bad idea. With that knowledge in hand, they will certainly do the right thing.
You should do the same just to be on the safe safe. If you don't know who your representatives are, just look it up in wiki... oh shiat.

If Google were to join and really, REALLY wanted to effect it, they'd do something to their advertising service for the day in addition to taking google.com down. Take the advertising service down, replace it with an anti-SOPA banner, etc.

I would 100% support Fark or whatever websites that did this... though not Gmail. (Under SOPA, would Google have a duty to montior Gmail for infringing content or information used to circumvent anti-infringement measures?)

The big problem is that it costs me nothing to not visit Fark all day, but it's going to cost Drew all of the ad revenue he would otherwise be making. The general public will be the most effected by SOPA, but site owners are the ones most effected by by a blackout.

A more likely outcome would be introduction of federal legislation prohibiting online "blackout" events conducted for the purpose of directing attention to legislative proposals.

Crap. I often use Wikipedia to help answer questions while doing my job. Now I'm going to have to use *shutter* forum sites:

Me: "This guy had the same problem as me. I wonder how he solved it... Let's see, some people had some advice, did any of it work?"

OP, later in the forum post: "Nevermind. I figured it out a different way. Thanks anyways guys!"

Me: "WHAT? Y u no say what solved problem?!? BLARGH!"

I bet >90% of the population doesn't know what SOPA is and they don't care. Even 90% of the people using Wikipedia today are going to miss the huge black banner across the top.

The majority of people visiting Wikipedia tomorrow will be unpleasantly surprised.

Except, such a piece of legislation would be blatantly unconstitutional. You can't compel a company to provide their service.

The bigger issue for the big players like Google would be the raft of business contracts they have. It'd be very easy for them to violate some kind of Service Level Agreement in the act of protesting, which could lead to large financial damages for Google.

I'd be really happy if they put up doodle on their front page.

Nonsense like this makes me support SOPA and write to my congressman to express said support.

the internet "free culture" b.s. has gone on long enough.

Protect IP, and let ISPs meter the internet, and let's move to an economically rational system instead of this nonsense.

Frankly, I think it's best Google stay out of the day of protest. Why? Because for some odd reason, google/youtube are being threatened with a monopoly investigation at the same time the MAFIAA pushes SOPA - If 70% of all Internet searches, ads, and videos all go offline as a result of Google saying "F U", that investigation suddenly turns into a lawsuit unless Google caves to them.
