Well, at least it isn't 3. Then we'd be getting letters before we write them.

/I fear for my state sometimes.

I wonder what the penalty was going to be for using the "incorrect" value?

I know what some of the penalties would be for using the legal value.

It can't be 3.2 by rounding. 3.141

Whew. At least 2 + 2 isn't 5. Yet.

It seems really stupid, but then legislators today insist on writing/passing bills on subjects in which they have absolutely zero expertise or understanding (tech stuff is the most common these days).

God, I was afraid I was going to open that and it was going to be a story about the current legislature. That's exactly how much confidence I have in them.

Well, to be fair- they HAVE to write legislation on things they're not experts in.

My problem is they seem to have their "experts" supplied by companies that have a lot of skin in the game.

Sort of like having an accused murder's brother testify as a medical expert. Not gonna fly.

That's nothing. The Texas Senate has mastered time.
the Senate had a midnight deadline for passing such bills, so it did what any of us frequently do when we're running late or past a deadline: It stopped time. Senate Sergeant-At-Arms Rick DeLeon unplugged the Senate clock at 11:58 p.m., allowing the body to work until almost 2:30 a.m. Problem solved.

Rounded to the nearest 5th accomplishes that. Also ceiled to the 10ths place works.

spcMike: It is for large values of 2.

I've always wondered if that joke is purely mathematicians being snarky or if it's related to log scales such as decibels

2dbm + 2dbm = 5dbm (approx, 5.0105...)

If you're using sufficiently big numbers, you'd want to use a log scale, at which point it works close enough.

Pop quiz.

What is:
1/3 in decimal form?
2/3 in decimal form?
3/3 in decimal form?
(1/3) x 3 in decimal form?
.33333 repeating x 3?

And go.

Well... To within an order of magnitude, sure...

It's within 2% margin of error - so it's still usable.
