last tuesday some Bama fan called to the Jim Rome Show and was trying to argue that Bama had in fact beaten LSU not once but twice (referrign to the initial 9-6 or whatever the final score was game).

He was arguing they had more yards, better turnover differential, had missed a field goal, (i'm not exactly sure what he said but it was this kind of 'woulda shoulda coulda' crap) and rome cut him off. "Yeah.....you outgained LSU and outperformed them.....everywhere except the scoreboard, so, don't tell me how you won that game because all I saw was the scoreboard....."

I don't give a crap about either team, but this just smells like excuses to me.

I'm an LSU fan. Truthfully, I'm not bitter at Bama, they showed up, and are consistently a damn good team. But it was obvious Les Miles was trying to prove a point. The coaching for LSU lost that game.

When Jefferson couldn't play, Lee stepped up. And he took the team half of the way. For him to not have been given a single chance to play this game was disgraceful and a slap in the face. Had he started this game and played like Jefferson did, he would have been pulled out in the second quarter. I'm not saying he could have done better, but he couldn't have done worse. And Les Miles, as a coach, should have changed his gameplan when Jefferson wasn't working.

I've also heard that players were upset with Jefferson because he had been hitting the bars big time the entire week leading up to the game. Which was semi-confirmed by a bouncer I met last night in the Quarter.

I'm not saying Les Miles not being a stubborn dickbag would have won us the BCS, but at the very least it would have given us a game worth watching.

Well, that explains it. Had the coach scribbled "SCORE POINTS" on the drawing board beforehand they might have stood a chance.

If this is true, Miles should be fired. He already has a rep for overturning his coordinators during games and playing smash-mouth football at the expense of everything else.

Les Miles is like the defensive version of RichRod. I'm glad Michigan didn't end up with Miles.

RichRod was an offensive "genius" who thought he knew better on defense and enforced a system that didn't work for crap... Miles is a defensive "genius" who thinks he knows better on offense and enforced a policy that didn't work for crap. Seems like two birds of a feather....

It should be an interesting game...Michigan continued to improve through the season, except for those two horrible losses. It will definitely be a better game than the Championship game was.

I have no doubt Michigan's program is now pointed in the right direction, but I wasn't impressed in the slightest by their performance against Va Tech. They looked solid defensively, but the Hokies aren't an offensive juggernaut to begin with, and I'm pretty sure I counted more than 10 occurrences in that game when Denard Robinson threw right into double-coverage.

No run game. Which happens when your center only has one good leg. So we were forced to past and the VT defense knew this and were waiting.

Michigan has shiat depth on the lines (fark you RR). I actually expect us to regress slightly this year due to the lack of offensive tackles and defensive tackles. Hoke is doing a great job recruiting lineman, but it takes them to grow them.

He should have told Miles that a few games ago when Miles put him in just to take a knee in the last play. I would have told him no, Jefferson can do that.

You didn't really fix anything, just added to what I already mentioned. Believe me, I know about his dual nature as a coach - I once heard someone on ESPN who worked with Miles at Michigan say Miles was the best recruiter he's ever seen, but Miles gets too involved in the playcalling, especially the offense. I also live in Baton Rouge and know some people involved with the football team, and that's their opinion, too.

JohnAnnArbor: Maybe we dodged a bullet by not hiring Les.

The man's track record is pretty good - he wins a lot, even the bowl games. He's also split his games with Saban, the coach he's often measured against. Being an LSU fan under Miles is accepting you'll root for teams with fantastic players, a solid defense, an offense with as much variety as the playbook from Super Tecmo Bowl and a good deal of offensive penalties/poor clock management (though this, to be fair, was better this year.)

You have to admit, the LSU play calling in that game was a bit bizarre. Those options and passes into the flats were just getting blown up, and they just kept going to them. I get that Jefferson had like a 2 Mississippi at best before four Bama defenders were in his jock but still.

Players openly revolting and demanding Lee on the eve of the NC after a 12-0 season is a little suspect, but I bet Les and his OC probably did have a falling out on the play calling philosophy for this game.

2012-01-16 12:53:23 PM
Only the most obtuse of Alabama fans (and that's a pretty big subset) won't acknowledge that the LSU team that went 13-0 in the regular season, and beat the Orange Bowl, Rose Bowl, Cotton Bowl AND BCS Champs AT HOME wasn't the team that showed up last Monday.

The huge shift in the betting line (3.5 points 24 hours before) confirms that SOMETHING big happened, and the "smart money" knew.

Whether this is it, or just a conspiracy theory, we'll probably never know.

In the 1998 World Cup final, an obviously dominant Brazil team sleep walked (slept walked?) through the final. The world's best player, Ronaldo was an absolute zombie, and France pulled off a huge upset. There were rumors that he had a mental breakdown, or got coked out of his mind, or got food poisoning or death threats, and Nike FORCED Brazil to play him, as he was their cash cow.

That was a MUCH (MUUUUUUUUCHHHHH) bigger scale than the BCS title game, and it's almost 15 years later, and the details surrounding it are murky (at best.)

I seriously doubt we'll ever find out what happened to that LSU team.

Makes me wonder if the LSU OL was letting Bama through hoping they'd knock Jefferson out of the game so Lee would get in.

Doubtful, but not totally unbelievable.

Well, based on the arguments you get from Fark's resident BCS apologists, yes.

Let's look at some of the incredible "#1 vs. #2" match-ups the BCS has given us in recent years:
- 2001: #1 Miami 37, #4 Nebraska 14
- 2003: #1 LSU 21, #3 Oklahoma 14 (while USC won the AP crown)
- 2004: USC 55, Oklahoma 19
- 2006: Florida 41, Ohio State 14
- 2007: LSU 38, Ohio State 24
- 2009: Alabama 37, Texas 21
- 2011: Alabama 21, LSU 0

Not to mention all the other blowouts you regularly see in the other BCS bowls.

The BCS: where every game counts...unless you're 2001 Nebraska, 2003 Oklahoma, 2004 Utah, 2007 Boise State, 2008 Utah, 2008 Texas, 2008 Oklahoma, 2008 Texas Tech, 2009 Cincinnati, 2009 Boise State, 2009 TCU, 2010 TCU, 2011 LSU, 2011 Alabama...or you happened to be ranked outside of the preseason top 20 before a given season. Nothing like a sport where over 80% of teams are eliminated from the championship before even playing a down!

But hey, at least you've got plenty of 6-6 vs. 6-6 action in "bowl games" instead of a playoff. Not only that, these bowl games are outsourced to sleazy bowl organizations run by people who make hundreds of thousands of dollars off the sport for nothing more than putting on glorified exhibition games (because it's not like schools are capable of staging 3-5 non-conference games in the regular season every year or anything), 34 out of 35 which have nothing to do with determining a champion and everything to do with enriching bowl directors and making sure the good old boys keep the $$$ rolling in. Because if you weren't good 40 years ago, you shouldn't be playing for the championship in 2011 no matter what you do on the field.

I'd be more interested in it with some more corroborating evidence. I don't gamble on football, so while I get that a 3.5 point shift in the line is pretty big what I don't know is how big. Once in 5 games? Once in 50? It makes a big difference.

The LSU offense was just terrible, though.

Honestly, the thing that annoys me is that there's a poll. Why not just settle it on the field? Have the teams play their regular season and then take the conference champs and have them play a tournament. Everything is settled on the field, nothing is left to the whims of voters or an unaccountable, secret process in a computer. You win your conference, you go to the tournament. You win the tournament, you're the national champion. Simple, easy, and it's all settled on the field.

You just summed up why I don't care about college football. There's no satisfying payoff at the end of the season. Just a couple of teams thrown into a sham of a game for a "championship" and then a bunch of others playing in games that are basically the 3rd, 4th, or 5th place game for a round robin tournament that never took place.

Well they actually had to play a number of other contending teams as opposed to having a grand total of one solid team you played all year, twice, and had a 1-1 record against.
