I liked the one where Hitler learned that his order to go on a series of offensives hadn't been carried out, and he freaks out and calls his generals a bunch of traitors, then promises that, the war now being lost, he'd kill himself before fleeing Berlin.

What's weird is, we never call people that have killed millions Hitler. They all get to keep their real name.

That School Board member that is arguing for increased school tax? Hitler.

Pol Pot? Not Hitler.

The funny part is I ended up watching that movie (and really liking it) because of those memes. And I never would have watched a foreign language film. And now they are sending out take down notices left and right. That meme was the best advertising they ever could have gotten.

Same here, though I do watch foreign movies fairly often. I never heard about it before the parody videos.

I was pleasantly surprised, and I may end up showing it to my history students.

I've always had a love of history so I may not represent your students. But after watching that movie it sparked in me a desire to spend hours researching all the small part characters. The story behind the radio operator who was the last person out alive and the female friend who decided not to run were particularly interesting.

I saw it when it first came out and have been singing its praises ever since, but nobody had ever heard of it until the meme even though it was actually a pretty controversial movie. It got lots of flack for "humanizing" Hitler when it was first released.

That's funny because I came away with a completely different view point. I felt it accurately portrayed him as psychopath. Everything was someone else's fault and he kept believing fictitious armies would come to his aid. I really liked the very end where it was subtly implied that he knew the truth and that's why he killed himself.

While that last part is some dramatic licensing. From what I've read he really did blame the Generals and the German people for the failure of the war and he was hell bent taking as many of his own people with him as possible.

Oh, I definitely think that it portrayed him as a psychopath. But it portrayed him as a human psychopath and not merely a monster, and people didn't like that.

Personally, I think it's far more powerful to portray him as a human who did absolutely horrible things, because if a human can do it and not just a monster, then it's even worse. Because if a monster does unspeakable things, well, that's what we expect, they're a monster. When we acknowledge that it was a human being that inflicted horror on his fellow human beings, then we open the possibility that anyone could be that evil given the right set of circumstances.

Perhaps that's why I came away with a different perspective than other people. Monsters or heros, they're all just people no different then the two of us. That's also why I find history so fascinating.

There is another version with Alex Guinness as Hitler that came out in the 70's called Hitler: The Last Ten Days. It's in English and really messes with you to hear Hitler sound like Obi Wan Kenobi
